They 1=They 2? They 1 and They 2= H/A/M? Popcorn = the regulation popped and buttered corn that you and I eat at the movies? Or something else? They burned it = they blackened it to such an extent as to make it undesirable to eat? Were they arrested as a direct consequence of the act of burning the popcorn? Or did burning the popcorn lead to something that caused their arrest (like a fire, etc.)? |

They 1=They 2? They 1 and They 2= H/A/M? Yes to all. Popcorn = the regulation popped and buttered corn that you and I eat at the movies? This one. Or something else? They burned it = they blackened it to such an extent as to make it undesirable to eat? I would disagree, as I like burned popcorn. But yes, they blackened it. Were they arrested as a direct consequence of the act of burning the popcorn? This is closer. Or did burning the popcorn lead to something that caused their arrest (like a fire, etc.)? |

Were they burning it on a stove? a small fire? a large fire (bonfire)? some other means? Did they intend to 'burn' it from the outset, or did they want to pop corn to eat it, but by mistake, ended up burning it? Location or time period relevant? If so, LTPF list of continents and centuries. How many guys involved? 2? 3? 5+? <20? |

Did they intend to create smoke? relevant? Is the means of burning the popcorn relevant? If it had been burned on a stove, would they still have gotten arrested? |

Fire alarms relevant? Did they have some sort of fire alarm that automatically summoned the fire department when it detected smoke? And when the fire department came, they found drugs/something else illegal? OTRT? |

Did they intend to create smoke? Yes. relevant? Yes. Is the means of burning the popcorn relevant? Not really. If it had been burned on a stove, would they still have gotten arrested? Yes. Fire alarms relevant? Yes. Did they have some sort of fire alarm that automatically summoned the fire department when it detected smoke? No. And when the fire department came, they found drugs/something else illegal? So no. OTRT? Yes. |

Did they set off a fire alarm? Or was it that their fire alarm wasn't working and that was considered a crime? Were they arrested for disturbing the peace? Would the puzzle work if they had burned something else eg wood? If they were trying to create smoke: were they trying to set off the fire alarm? In order to make a loud noise? |

did they burn the popcorn to create smoke to block a camera? did they use a microwave? were they trying to get the sprinklers to come on? did the burn unusual amounts of popcorn? is there a popcorn factory or stand involved? was there a criminal intent behind what's going on? did they burn anything else that lead to the popcorn being burned? |

Did the police believe they had committed a crime? were committing a crime? Did they, in fact, do anything criminal? Did the burned popcorn somehow alert authorities to some other illegal activity going there? Were they in a house? apartment? dormitory? public building? outdoors? some other location? |

Were they trying to get everyone out of the dorm? So they could do something illegal? Did they burn the popcorn to distract from other burning things (marijuana, for example)? Is this a college dorm? Is this a law that a lot of college students break? Was a prank involved? |

I am aware that pulling a fire alarm (manually) unnecessarily is a criminal offense (at least here in the US). Is this unrelated to the charges brought against these students? |

Was the prank on someone who lived in the same dorm? Was it accomplished simply by setting off the fire alarm? were there other preparations that they made, and setting off the fire alarm was the final step? Did they take advantage of the confusion caused by the fire alarm to perform their prank? Or were there additional steps both before and after setting off the fire alarm? Were they breaking fire codes? Would they have been arrested if they hadn't planned a prank, and had set off the fire alarm accidentally by burning popcorn? Was anyone injured? Killed? Was the person(s) they played the prank on injured? killed? |

Does the prank have anything to do with the fact that when fire alarms go off in dorms in the middle of the night, the result is a crowd of half-dressed people outside (i.e. wearing whatever they were sleeping in)? Was their goal to get a particular person outside? A particular group of people? Everyone in the dorm? Did the crime take place inside the dorm? Or outside where the dorm residents gathered? |

No. were there other preparations that they made, and setting off the fire alarm was the final step? So this. Did they take advantage of the confusion caused by the fire alarm to perform their prank? Did they set up some kind of booby trap that someone would stumble into when the fire alarm went off? Did they in any way prevent someone from evacuating? |

They prevented someone from evacuating for some purpose? (i.e. they did something bad to someone who they prevented from evacuating) Or was the entire prank that they prevented someone from evacuating? Was the thing that they actually got arrested for doing something they planned on doing? Or was it an unintended consequence of the prank? |

They prevented someone from evacuating for some purpose? (i.e. they did something bad to someone who they prevented from evacuating) Not this. Or was the entire prank that they prevented someone from evacuating? Yes. Was the thing that they actually got arrested for doing something they planned on doing? This one. Or was it an unintended consequence of the prank? Screaming "fire" in a crowded theatre relevant? No. I've been away from the board for a while, but I think that this one gets a... ********SPOILER******** They burned popcorn to set off the fire alarm, previously having prevented some people from evacuating by tying their doors shut. They didn't think through the consequences too well, though, because they were charged with reckless endangerment for this prank. Here's the news story that was the basis for this puzzle: Police arrest N.J. man in college popcorn prank in Connecticut by The Associated Press Tuesday May 12, 2009, 8:42 AM NEW BRITAIN, Conn. -- Police at Central Connecticut State University arrested three people, including a Passaic County resident, for an early morning prank Monday that filled a dormitory with smoke. Police said the smoke came from popcorn that was intentionally burned in a microwave. Several students struggled to get out of Vance Hall because their doors were tied shut. No one was hurt. Charges including reckless endangerment and reckless burning were filed against 18-year-old Matthew Dortch of Wayne, 18-year-old Patrick Robinson of Goshen, N.Y., and Christopher Scifo of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Thanks to all who participated and to Noel for finishing it off. |
