I used to think the name of a certain place was paradoxical, but that was because I had a scrund about how that place got its name. I have since met a few other people who had this scrund. What is it??

Paradoxical because it (appears to) describe the place as polar opposite to what it actually is? Is the word 'New' in the name? 'Old'?

Is the place a building? Street? Town/city? Country? Subordinate nation state (e.g. Wales, Taiwan etc.)?

Paradoxical in that the name actually contradicts itself in some way (e.g. "Hill Valley")? Or that it contradicts some property of the place (e.g. "Greenland")? If you had known nothing at all about the place itself, only the name, would you still have thought the name was paradoxical?

Is the place man-made? or natural? Is it a body of water? island? group of islands? mountain? mountain range? other physical feature?

Is the place in the northern hemisphere? southern? eastern? western?

Does the name (or some part of it) sound like an English word, but it was really derived from a word in another language with a completely different meaning to the English word? Like the Canary Islands?

Is the place man-made? I don't think so or natural? I think so Is it a body of water? yesisland? no group of islands? no mountain? no mountain range? no other physical feature?
no

I apparently had a scrund about this, too, since I took it for granted thatthe islands were named for canaries.

Is it fresh water? salt water? moving water? still water?

Is it in Europe? Asia? Africa? Other?

Does the name make it sound like it's something other than a body of water? that it's a different type of body of water than it actually is?

Is the dead sea the one that has extra buoyancy, which means you can almost 'sit' in it? Meaning you are less likely to drown? And you thought it was named the dead sea because lots of people drown in it? Anything like this?

*********** SPOILER *******************
I used to think that the name of the dead sea was paradoxical, because why would they call it a dead sea if you couldn't drown in it? The answer is that plants & animals can't live in it. Sorry it was so easy, but brand-new replacement puzzle won't be. . .I hope

Thanks--please check out my new one! (I've always thought of a good puzzle as taking a long time to solve, but I've noticed that many forum members disagree with me about this.)
