Does it matter when (year, decade, century) this takes place? Where (geographically)? What kind of terrain? Surroundings? Climate? Does this take place on earth? (I'm really stumbling over the "not quite indoors or outdoors" thing, back to basics...)

Is the father on the ground? In the air?

Is he moving (realive to his surroundings) while doing his "thing"? Are the mother & child? (Other than the earth spinning, let's not get too relativistic here...)

The object(s) he uses. Is it one object? More than one? Is it (they) round (spherical)? Larger than a microwave? Made of: leather? Cloth? Wood? plastic? metal?

So the father is piloting an empty plane.

Can the child see him? Or just the plane?

Does he do something unusual with the plane? If so, is it related to the takeoff? Landing? Flight itself?

Does he turn the plane upside down? Do a looping? Crash landing?

Is she afraid he'll lose his pilot's license or job? Is someone else with them, that the father didn't know would be there? Is it a boss for the outfit the father flies for?

Just to be sure - what was said by the wife? The child? The husband? Someone else?

Child: "That's my Dad! That's my Dad!"
Mother: "No it's not!"

Nothing else relevant is said by anyone.

The child and his mother are on ground/perhaps in the airport? or at home (this seems most likely to me)? with several other people watching?
The child's father is flying a plane, knows that his son and wife are watching, and wants to amuse the child, so he flies as low as he can above them.
The child is impressed, exactly as his father wanted him to, points at the plane and cries "That's my Dad! That's my Dad!"

The mother, however, is rather ashamed (the plane is making too much noise, or has another unpleasant effect) and says "No, it's not!"

Something along this line?

Something along this line? You've got it, and the puzzle title suggests the unpleasant effect. ("Bam!"

Spoiler

********************

“When we were living at Langley, my dad was gone a lot, usually out flying. His schedule would usually bring him back home toward dinnertime, and the flight pattern took him over our house.
So my mom and I would go outside on the evenings when Dad was flying, and watch for him to go over. He would waggle his wings as he passed, then Mom would go in and start dinner, knowing he would be home by the time it was ready.
One day -- I don’t know what got into him -- but Dad came over and instead of just waggling his wings, he lit up his afterburner. Pow! A couple of windows broke and kids started screaming.
I loved it. I was jumping up and down and shouting, “That’s my Dad! That’s my Dad!” My mom, however, was hauling me inside, yelling, “No, it’s not!”
I think he got written up for it, too.”

Haha, good puzzle. Thanks, Jenburdoo!

There is, however, one thing which puzzles me. How can you waggle the wings of a jet plane?

By rolling slightly from side to side.

Ah... I never realised this is possible. I thought that the wings are sort of solid.

Btw, apart from your puzzle, I like very much its title :-))

They are solid. But by tilting the plane, you tilt the wings too. I suppose it could be called "waggling the plane."
