REVISION!!! Oh, dear, I appear to have left out a fairly important answer (I'll tell you later why that was, it was an unfortunate oversight). But it comes at a good time, I think. here is my revised response to Peter365: Is the window in a house? a public building? an office or workplace? this is closest a hospital? this also some form of transport? |

Was the room a laboratory? Yes Did the window allow the fungus inside the room that ultimately was discovered by Fleming? Yes ************************SPOILER******************* In the hot summer of 1928, Fleming left for a two-week vacation and didn't close his laboratory window. He also left a stack of culture plates, some of which were smeared with staphylococcus bacteria. While he was gone, a spore containing a rare strain of a fungus mold called penicillium drifted into his lab from another lab in the same building. By chance, it settled onto the messy culture plate. And we know what happened when he returned... (Of course, "Many more would have died" refers to the fact that Fleming's discovery would have at the very least been delayed or maybe even discovered much later by someone else, likely causing more people to die from the various bacterial diseases that penicillin treats...) I had a feeling it was only a matter of time before someone spotted the "famous event" depicted here. Hope you guys enjoyed this one - Figure09, you paid your dues with this one, so I'm glad it was you who dealt the final blow. (Lot of good questions from others of course, including Alhucema, who threw the fastball to Figure09.) I learned long after posting this that someone else did a Fleming-related puzzle not long ago. Go figure. |
