Oh i think Lynne might be right. I'm told the Scots chose the 1 O'Clock gun because it was cheaper than firing 12 shots at midday.

Maybe that would work, but it's not the answer. And I don't know much at all about Edinburgh or Scotland, so I couldn't possibly have thought of that.

Is the city near a harbor? Yes, Boston is near Boston Harbor but this is irrelevant Near a military base? No
Are the cannons a salute? A signal? Part of the 1812 overture? Yes! I didn't think anyone would get that part this quickly. Now just figure out how that's relevant to the puzzle and you'll have it solved!

Is it being played by the Boston Pops? Yes! You just have one more detail to figure out, and you'll have it. Namely, how did hearing the cannon portion of the 1812 Overture as played by the Boston Pops cause the man to realize he was late for work?

Was he supposed to do something during the performance?

Did he hear it live? on radio? on TV? over a walkie talkie or CB?

Is he one of the soldiers who are supposed to fire the cannons?

One of my favorite memories of Wichita, Kansas, was the last night of the River Festival each year, when the orchestra played the 1812 Overture and a local artillery battery provided the gunfire.

Just a quick message to Dropofahat. Either great minds think alike or fools seldom differ but when I asked earlier in the puzzle whether or not he was from Newcastle I was working on the theory that the 'he' in the puzzle was Brian Johnson lead singer of AC/DC who famously fire a 21 gun salute when performing their song "For those about to Rock (We salute you)"

Sorry for the interuption

Peter 365: Ha, I didn't catch the Newcastle reference, so independent evolution I suppose. When I thought of cannons being used in modern times, only AC/DC and 1812 popped into my head. Luckily one was right!

I think you may have missed Jenburdoo's question, which is pertinent to what I'm going to ask...

Is he waiting to do something that occurs right after the concert? (Does he work for the radio station broadcasting it?) And when he hears the cannons, he knows he doesn't have enough time to do it?

Was he asleep, and hears it on his clock-radio as the alarm goes off? And the part with the cannons was on at that time, so instead of music, he had guns firing in his ear?

Wait. It occurs to me that if he had set his alarm the night before, he would not be late for work because he would have set the thing correctly. But IIRC, the gunfire comes near the end of the piece. Perhaps the music came on at the proper time, was too quiet or restful and he fell asleep again until half an hour later when the guns, doubling as a snooze alarm, abruptly woke him.

*****SPOILER******

Jenburdoo is close enough. He worked late nights (say his shift started at 9:00 Pm or something) so he set his alarm clock-radio to go off at maybe 7:30, to the same station the Boston Pops 4th of July Concert would be on that night at 8 PM. However, when he heard 1812 Overture, which is played towards the end (it used to be at the end, until CBS took over the TV from A&E and ruined everything) and realized it must be around 10:00 at night and he set his alarm wrong, or else slept through it for 2 and a half hours.

Good job, Jen! I think the rest of us were still a long way away from thinking about an alarm clock. And nice puzzle, Ferrets.
