-But, isn't that illegal?
-Yes, said the Police. But don't be stupid, save yourself!
-If only I had gone home yesterday instead. Or learned how not to burn a steak.

So both the statements "Isn't that illegal", and "If only I had gone home yesterday instead. Or learned how not to burn a steak." are uttered by one person?

If so, it isn't you, is it? Is the person HAM?

Are the police advicing this person to do something illegal? Something which would otherwise be illegal but can be used in this case as a lesser evil?

Oh, and I just realized I forgot what may be the most likely (statistically speaking): traffic violations? Surely murder is, statistically speaking, by far the most common crime to occur in the LTPF?

Would the police be likely to do the same thing as the woman in the statement in order to save themselves?
Is she saving herself from mortal danger? fire? flood? earthquake?
Was the person in the puzzle statement cooking a steak at any point in this puzzle? On a cooker? on an open fire? indoors? outdoors? Beef steak? sirloin? rump? t-bone? Did she intend to eat it with mustard? English? French? Am I asking obviously irrelevant questions? Should I just stop and post this?

"If only I had gone home yesterday instead."
Did she go home before yesterday? Today? Or was she planning on going home tomorrow or later?

Did she burn the steak yesterday? Before that? Today?

If she doesn't perform the illegal act, will she fall down from a height and die? Does the act involve her clothes at all?

Is she physically going to have to do something to avoid falling? Which is in turn the yopishly indecent illegal act?

If she doesn't perform the illegal act, will she fall down from a height and die? That's one alternative, more probably something else will happen, though with the same final result Does the act involve her clothes at all? No

Is she physically going to have to do something to avoid falling? Yope Which is in turn the yopishly indecent illegal act? Yes, but as I wrote before - "Indicent act" would probably be the closest of the given alternatives

HINT: Her inability to cook a good steak, make a roast-beef or any other similar food goes back a long time. She hasn't even tried it for years, but if she had had that knowledge life would have been different for her.

Was the illegal act something in violation of FAA regulations? Does it involve: using prohibited communication equipment (cell phone, 2-way radio, etc.)? blocking an exit row? disabling some safety feature of the plane?

Is everyone on the plane in mortal danger?

Wow, have we entered hyperlateral mode on this board? This is the second puzzle today that I've heard has a really strange solution, despite starting as if it could be a normal everyday situation. It seems the solutions had been getting a little ordinary, maybe the pendulum is swinging back.

Anyway, despite the strangeness, is what she planned on doing something that the average airline passenger would likely try to do to survive the type of emergency occurring at the time? or is she unusually clever/imaginative?

Is the emergency: an imminent (or already happened) crash? a severe drop in cabin pressure? a fire? a water landing? some other type of non-routine landing?

It seems the solutions had been getting a little ordinary, maybe the pendulum is swinging back. However, there's nothing "futurish" or "scifi-ish" about this puzzle... :-)

Anyway, despite the strangeness, is what she planned on doing something that the average airline passenger would likely try to do to survive the type of emergency occurring at the time? An average airline passenger would normally not have the option, but in her situation there's only one thing to do. It's however the policeman that has done the "planning". or is she unusually clever/imaginative? No, in a way actually a bit to the contrary, that's why the policeman has to argue with her

Is the emergency: an imminent While not exactly imminent, the words "inevitable" and "soon" comes to mind. (or already happened) crash? Crash bang, yes a severe drop in cabin pressure? a fire? There's some fire already, yes a water landing? If we were so lucky... some other type of non-routine landing?

Galfisk:
Is it an airliner? Or a smaller plane? This. It's a small passenger plane Or cargo plane? Skydiving relevant? Yes Restricted airspace? Terrorism/hijacking? Will she save only herself? Yes, in the situation it's enough work for one person Does saving herself involve getting out of the plane? Yes

Is the plane: in the air? Yes Standing still on the ground? Taxiing? Taking off? Landing? Is it damaged? Yes, struck by lightning Something supernatural going on? Not at all

*************** RECAP *****************
Puzzle statement:
-But, isn't that illegal?
-Yes, said the Police. But don't be stupid, save yourself!
-If only I had gone home yesterday instead. Or learned how not to burn a steak.

What we have found out is that the puzzle statements are uttered by a woman and a policeman.
They are both, along with some more people, in mortal danger in a small plane damaged by lightning.
The policeman has an idea how they can save themselves, but she is for some reason arguing when the police asks her to do something which would be illegal to her.
That reason is somehow connected to her unability to cook a steak, her husband going to a restaurant...
Nothing supernatural is going on.
Everything in the puzzle statement is relevant.

Is the danger that they might crash due to the lightning damage to the plane? Yope/Yes. It's not that they might crash, the plane will crash. Is the plane on fire? Yes, a little Did any big parts come off the plane? A motor or so, fuel tank maybe Anybody got injured? Only minor injuries yet
Air relevant? Not more than that a smallish plane without well-working motors often doesn't nosedive and crash in two seconds, it can "glide" on the air and crash slower. But there's no place suitable for an emergency landing here.
Wings of plane relevant? They're still there

Illegal to her (with emphasis on "to her") meaning:
It's illegal for any non-police to do?
Illegal for any woman to do?
Illegal for her, and a small subset of people in her situation?
It's not actually illegal, but she (in a dumb blonde-y sort of way) thinks it is?

Is it illegal for her to parachute only on that particular day? No, but very much OTRT and would have been ok the day before? Yes, because...

Galfisk:
"Her category" = the people banned form skydiving by this law.
The "category" is defined by four things, varying static/dynamic:
1) Females
2) Previously married
3) (Something depending on *when*)
4) (Something more)

When all four "requirements" are fulfilled, parachuting is denied by law.

So the divorce was only finalized earlier that day (or possibly late the day before)?

Does this law exist to prevent suicide attempts by recent divorcees?

Does this law exist to prevent suicide attempts by recent divorcees? I know of no sane reason for this law to exist...

Is she forbidden to skydive on the anniversary of her divorce? Within a certain amount of time since her divorce? Within a year? On a day when she's supposed to have custody of the kids? On the anniversary of her marriage?

Time of day relevant?

Can men be in category 4? Children? Does category 4 have to do with flying? Skydiving? Similar? do most in category 1-3 also fall into category 4? Can she get herself out of this category? Did she get herself into it? Are people born into category 4?

Can men be in category 4? FA. These are not four categories, they are the four parameters that concurrently should be fulfilled to be placed in the "No Skydiving" category. And you can't be both female and man at the same time. Children? No previously married children here Does category 4 have to do with flying? No, for parameter 4 Skydiving? No Similar? No
do most in category 1-3 also fall into category 4? The FA again, all parameters simultaneously for "No Chuting". Can she get herself out of this category? She can make parameter 4 not be fulfilled, yes Did she get herself into it? Yes, she herself made parameter 4 "coming into action" Are people born into category 4? Some people have parameter 4 fulfilled when they are born yes. More have not.

How long ago did she fulfill parameter 4: that day? within the past week? within the past month? within the past year? within the past 5 years? longer?

Is parameter 4 fulfilled when a person does something? says something? When something happens that is out of the person's control?

****************************** SPOILER *******************************

Madge grew up in USA with golf-playing parents and a grand-father being a judge, so you can believe there was always talk about "being honest", "go by the law", "not cheating"...
This was in no way beaten into her, but it got deep roots in her mind anyway.
When she grew up, it felt the right thing to marry a man with a good job and stable economy, some years older than her. They didn't start with any major problems, but maybe he overrated his own importance. Since she married so young, her knowledge of household things and cooking were only minor. And that became more and more of a problem, since food - especially meat - was very important for her husband Frank. He became more and more disgruntled every time she burnt the Sunday steak, and finally it lead to him asking for (and getting) a divorce.

Almost a year later, Madge went on a trip to Orlando meeting some friends who lived there. She was due to return home a Saturday, but because of bad August weather she delayed her flight home. The weather wasn't better on Sunday, but now she could wait no longer. Jokingly one of her friends just had to tease her about the Florida law that prohibits divorced women to skydive on Sundays - "Think if something happens to the plane, what should law-abiding you do then?".

Of course the plane got into a storm and was struck by lightning. Luckily it did have parachutes, and enough for the few passengers onboard (most had delayed their flights due to the weather) - I'm sure chutes beat the usual life-vests in this case. And while it was definitely going to crash, the descent was slow and gave them enough time. Of course Madge was panic-stricken by having to break the law for the first time in her life, and it took a civil-dressed policeman both persuasion and showing his badge to get her to put on a chute. Despite the bad weather, the parachutes didn't tear apart and they all survived their landings, though badly bruised.

Thanks for playing!

Haha, great puzzle and quite a stupid law! I wonder how many of those laws were made just to get at someone specific the lawmaker had a grudge against.

Usually when it comes to these "stupid laws" there is nowhere a written text with a reading like "Divorce or widowed women can't skydive in Florida on Sundays". What there is, is usually a couple of old laws that combined give the stupid result. One of the laws could even be before airplanes existed. It's just that when many laws gets old and even obsolete they are not removed from the books since that is in itself a process. In this case Madge might have been fined one dollar...

Yes, I have the same impression (except of that not all laws involved have to be that old). Laws, especially if they are thought out well, tend to be quite general in scope. So, if you combine two different laws and focus on fringe cases, you will get some unusual result. For example, there may be one law defining endangered animals. This very probably will include whales (unless you look at the law of a landlocked country). Another law will state that foothold traps are illegal if there is a risk to harm protected animals. The result is that somebody will post on the internet that that "In $NOT_LANDLOCKED_COUNTRY it is illegal to catch whales in foodhold traps", which is technically true but surely doesn't imply that lawmakers in $NOT_LANDLOCKED_COUNTRY are raving mad.
