A sled or toboggan.? c. One who rides a sled or toboggan.? or 5. A resident of a coastal region.? "is finished jumping on his mother": should this be taken literally? or metaphorically? does the expression have some special proverbial sense to it? |

Eight is a lucky number in China (and maybe other countries). Any relevance with luck? Was this the final tally of something? Had there been more or less than eight within the framework of this puzzle? Octoplets? That's all the father could utter before checking his bank balance and running off? |

eight alone? no Does it have to be eight? no Or could it be 8? yes Or a different number? no Spelling (mispelling) relevant? no Ate misspelled? no A word like Freight? Or Weight? Or Eighth? none of these, except insofar as "eight" is a word like all of these eight meaning a specific number yes in a sequence? no Does this signify a total this one or a corresponding letter in a word? no Do the individual letters have meaning? of "eight"? no An anagram, sequence, password? none of those coster: as in costermonger: noun Brit. a person who sells fruit or vegetables from a cart or street stand? yes, indeed or coaster: 1. One that coasts, as: a. One who acts in an aimless manner.? b. A sled or toboggan.? c. One who rides a sled or toboggan.? or 5. A resident of a coastal region.? and none of those "is finished jumping on his mother": should this be taken literally? or metaphorically? does the expression have some special proverbial sense to it? see below for further elucidation or is "coster" some jargon for a store employee or other person engaged in establishing prices/costs/other financial implications/impacts? it is not Am I right to assume that "Pirates of Penzance" are not particularly relevant here? you are not neither is the "infernal nonsense of Pinafore"? but Pinafore is not relevant Is a person named Coster relevant? no Charles de Coster? never heard of him "Eight" as in "not seven"? yes "not any other number"? indeed Eight is a lucky number in China (and maybe other countries). Any relevance with luck? on the contrary, perhaps... Was this the final tally of something? no Had there been more or less than eight within the framework of this puzzle? no Octoplets? That's all the father could utter before checking his bank balance and running off? no, but good thinking (if not especially good spelling of "octuplets") does the title have any sort of relevance at all.....? it does, and it may be Googled at will, as may everything in any woubit puzzle |

Are we dealing with a specific situation in this puzzle? If so, is the phrase in the title uttered in this situation? Does it take place beside a street cart or stand? Selling fruit? Or vegetables? Does "coster" refer to the wares sold? Or to their salesman/-woman? Is any of the following bludderings tangentially somewhat relevant: coster mother? "when the coster's finished jumping on his monger"? "when the monger's finished jumping on his coster"? "is finished jumping on his mother": should this be taken literally? or metaphorically? does the expression have some special proverbial sense to it? see below for further elucidation ? |

are any of the following relevant? Pirates of Penzance? peripherally Gilbert? Sullivan? not at all number of pirates, number of daughters, number of police? no Major General Stanley? no Frederick's [classic] birthday? no - this puzzle is not really about the plot of The Pirates of Penzance 32? 46? time of day? time signature of music? of music in PofP? and not about any of those things either, but good erudition backed up by good thinking Are we dealing with a specific situation in this puzzle? yesish If so, is the phrase in the title uttered in this situation? no Does it take place beside a street cart or stand? Selling fruit? Or vegetables? none of these Does "coster" refer to the wares sold? Or to their salesman/-woman? in this context the word "coster" was an abbreviation for the word "costermonger", which as you have correctly discerned was a street vendor of fruit and vegetables. This, however, isn't generally heard and if it is, it doesn't matter... Is any of the following bludderings tangentially somewhat relevant: coster mother? "when the coster's finished jumping on his monger"? "when the monger's finished jumping on his coster"? no - this is not to do with spoonerisms, though it does involve word play of a different kind "is finished jumping on his mother": should this be taken literally? or metaphorically? does the expression have some special proverbial sense to it? no, not really |

pirates/police/ this, for svv of "police" daughters relevant? felons/felonies relevant? no punishment/penance/restitution relevant? no vegetables relevant? no mothers relevant? no is the relevant situation real? this one fictional? octal notation relevant? binary? no rhythm/meter (e.g., iambic) relevant? no implied disparity between HAMs and HAFs relevant? disparity? I meant no such implication - if there are four men in a room, one might say "there are a few people in that room"; if four women enter the room, one might then say "there are a few more people in that room" snooker relevant? no, but an interesting piece of thinking any gambling involved? no |

Is there only "eight" left of something? and this quantity is declining? and when there's nothing left something/somebody/some organization/some profession/some idea becomes obsolete? Is "eight" (or "Eight"?) in this puzzle a quantity of something? no a number of things? no, not really a number of items of the same kind? (the number of ravens in the Tower of London?) no - eight is merely the number eight, but you need to explore some other ways in which the number eight might be represented a number? yes a score? no an Eight in a deck of cards? no eight holes in golf? no eight tricks in bridge? no, but bonus marks for references to the interests of the problem setter Is there only "eight" left of something? and this quantity is declining? and when there's nothing left something/somebody/some organization/some profession/some idea becomes obsolete? nothing of this kind - see above Is there somebody whose lot is not a happy one? yes if so: one individual? yes to my knowledge, though it is not impossible that there are two or three others a group of people? see foregoing members of a particular profession? no government workers? no the LTPF puzzlers? yes |

Hmm, the eighth listed rule in the user guide is the one about not posting classic puzzles. Relevant? It seems to me that the links to the classic puzzles in that user guide are both broken links. (or at least they're not loading for me). Relevant? I had thought that this might be about the rule not to spell out the word $poiler until you are finished with the puzzle because it causes problems for moderators, but I count that as number 7. But it still seems like the most logical rule to cause "unhappiness" for a moderator to me. Is it relevant? |

Relevant? no It seems to me that the links to the classic puzzles in that user guide are both broken links. (or at least they're not loading for me). Relevant? no - some links were broken some time ago when we "upgraded" to a new version of the software that drives this board. They have not been fixed; perhaps they cannot be. I had thought that this might be about the rule not to spell out the word $poiler until you are finished with the puzzle because it causes problems for moderators, but I count that as number 7. But it still seems like the most logical rule to cause "unhappiness" for a moderator to me. Is it relevant? no - in fact, the use of the word in plain text in a puzzle has never caused me the slightest difficulty does Eight have much to do with moderators having to deal with us poor noobs..? not in the least - it is always good to see new faces on the forum is the misery rather literal, and the poor policeman's lot is really not a happy one? no - the question is more of a fleeting moment of vexation a truly miserable mod? or an annoyed mod? an irked/vexed mod? mod(s) in denial? nothing like this user-interface relevant? no bandwidth? and no - sorry about all the "nos"; I am not actually in denial, even though I may at present seem to resemble "der Geist, der stets verneint" (or should that be "verachtet" in this puzzle?) |

Married couples? still no, and I am afraid the answer will be the same if you ask the question once more. You are not a Bellman, and this is not a rulebreaker. |

I thought that braces "comes in pairs"... :-) Is it about the difficulty some people seem to have with puzzle titles? about having their names enclosed in []? and when they don't, moderators should fix that? (){}[]<> = eight? |

My apologies for neglecting this. any relevance to: curly braces {}? formatting? forum posts? deprecated html tags [<b>]? I am not quite sure what a deprecated html tag is - do people sit around pouring scorn on certain tags while praising others? At any rate, that last is close, but this is closer... Is it about the difficulty some people seem to have with puzzle titles? about having their names enclosed in []? and when they don't, moderators should fix that? yes, indeed (){}[]<> = eight? well, not quite. But close enough for a ***** SPOILER ***** The idea is that puzzle-setters should put their name in square brackets, then a space, then the title of the puzzle, as for example: [woubit] When the coster's finished jumping on his mother Although most setters have no difficulty with this at all, those that do irk me no end. Curly braces, slashes, stars, nothing whatsoever - all of these send me to the moderator's board muttering under my breath. Four is a square, and two is a brace, and eight is four times two - a "square brace" if you will. And I am a grumpy old man, but today I give thanks for the LTPF and promise (or threaten) to set the customary woubit Christmas puzzle when the next holiday comes around. |

Oh dear, then I fear that I am one of those who annoy you frequently. In fact while setting a recent puzzle I put the title in the brackets and then my name. I noticed that a mod fixed it so apologies if that was you. Was it this incident that inspired the puzzle? As ever I am eagerly awaiting the woubit christmas puzzle. I look forward to several weeks of being completely stumped. |

a deprecated html tag is one like <b> for bold text -- current standards frown upon presentational tags -- if the text is to be bold, for instance, the stylesheet is the place to code that... part of my work involves writing (and re-writing) html, so those old-school (deprecated) <b> and <i> tags irk me, slightly, since they make extra work -- while they put coin in my pockets. I've posted two puzzles so far (another coming), and think my track record's just fine with the brackets... I'll watch for it, though. nice puzzle. - Y |

As a moderator, I always put my name in curly brackets. Sorry if it annoys you: I don't see how it makes a difference other than looking a bit fancier. |
