A man is not a professional animal handler. Yet frequently, as part of his job, he is required to deal with wild and dangerous creatures. Explain. |

I think I'll take an opportunity to tell a rather humorous story that was brought to mind by this puzzle: Once, many years ago, I was hiking with my mom in an area of open space. We happened to run into a team of employees of the local water district, who were servicing a water tank. Or rather, they were hanging out in their truck listening to the radio, while supposedly working on the tank. One of them said to us, "Oh, we heard you and thought you might be mountain lions". So it became kind of an inside joke that the local water district is in charge of chasing mountain lions. --------------------------------- Anyway, as for the puzzle: Does his job attract these animals? or are they simply there naturally? Are there any other people who work in the same location? If so, would they have to handle these animals? |

wild animals interfering with launch/takeoff/liftoff/landing? Yep. See spoiler below. or is the interference the other way around? Well, you wouldn't want to be an endangered species, sleeping comfortably on a warm runway, with a massive jet bearing down on you... is it the Kennedy Space Center (don't know if Cape Canaveral has any relevance or existence any more, but it did when I was a boy during Apollo! ...seems that the name is somehow deprecated in my mind...)? Canaveral is still the main US launch site, and the only one used for manned launches. After the end of the shuttle program in 2010, we'll be flying out of Kazakhstan for a while. ************* Spoiler **************** Meritt Island doubles as a wildlife refuge. The KSC is actually pretty small compared to the rest of the island. Its airfield is heavily used, mostly to carry spacecraft components but also for the occasional emergency or shuttle landing. Before landings take place, people have to go out and shoo alligators off the runway. |
