I saw a mention of holiday puzzles elsewhere on the forum, so I guess it's time. Just like an advertisement: "Effortlessly, and with no will power, lose all that extra holiday weight!" ...but Max managed to do that, nearly every year, with no effort or will power. How? bonus: determine the obscure relevancy of British currency to this puzzle. |

Max: HAM? yes Weight = from eating? no Does Max actually gain weight, then lose it? yesish... If yes, does he exercise? go on a diet? take medication? other? this Currency relevant - pounds? actually, yes - but watch for FAs and other hindrances; I threw the currency bit in for sport... I don't know whether exploring this would lead to a solution... Does he make himself sick from eating too much and then falls into a coma and conveniently loses the weight whilst unconscious? no - but a strategy some might explore |

The weight that he gains and loses: is it body weight? Or something he carries? Something he owns? Is "holiday weight" an accurate description? Is it money? Does he sell lots of stuff during the holiday season, gaining lots of £, which he has no problem spending afterwards? |

Not sure where to go from here. There's an actor. He hams it up on stage/television. Somehow, he inadvertently loses weight of some sort, without trying or effort. We're supposed to figure out how he loses weight? and what this has to do with being an actor? And what this has to do with the holidays? Does he wear a fat suit as part of an acting role? Is the acting role holiday related? |

Not sure where to go from here. your summary and questions are just right -- and thanks for the visit...! There's an actor. yes He hams it up on stage this/television. not this, but others besides Max have done this Somehow, he inadvertently FA; he expects to, and looks forward to it, mostly loses weight of some sort, without trying or effort. yes -- it's easy for Max We're supposed to figure out how he loses weight? yes, please explore and what this has to do with being an actor? yope And what this has to do with the holidays? yope; the two "yopes" indicate that these are not really essential answers to seek -- they're collateral, mostly, as the $poiler will (soon, I'm sure) indicate. Does he wear a fat suit as part of an acting role? no Is the acting role holiday related? absolutely yes, it is. |

Is the character the Ghost of Christmas Present? He is often depicted like Santa with sack or cornucopia of goodies, usually food, that he puts down, thus relieving himself of its weight. |

Tiny Tim? no. Doesn't he lose a leg at some point in the tale? in the unrealized Yet-to-Come, he loses his life, but I think he only weighs about two pounds, so he doesn't apply, here. If not, is he one of the Christmas ghosts? One of the Marleys? one of these... Someone from Scrooge's past? His present? His future? Is it Bob Cratchet? |

They are attempting to get rid of the "chains they forged in life" by helping Scrooge (or maybe it's just to warn him so he stops forging his own chains?). Are the chains the relevant weight? |

They just the one, actually are attempting to get rid of the "chains they I* forged in life" by helping Scrooge (or maybe it's just to warn him so he stops forging his own chains?). that's the purpose of the ghostly visit, but not the relevant holiday weight-loss... Are the chains the relevant weight? they are -- how is Max "easily and effortlessly" losing that "holiday weight?" * just to be accurate... |

Oh, right! Haha, I was temporarily thinking of the version "A Muppet Christmas Carol," in which they have replaced Jacob Marley with the two old geezers who usually sit up in balconies and critique things. I had quite forgotten that that the second Marley was a muppet addition. Oops =) Does he lose the holiday weight by taking off and putting away his costume at the end of the show? |

Does he lose the holiday weight by taking off and putting away his costume at the end of the show? right you are, Noel -- * * * * * * * SPOILER * * * * * * * Max, an actor, participates in an amateur production of A Christmas Carol, nearly every year at holiday time. His favorite role, which his thespian colleagues acknowledge he "owns," is the role of the Ghost of Jacob Marley, Scrooge's one-time business partner, who was, likely, more avaricious than Scrooge himself. He visits Scrooge, enshrouded in chains: "I wear the chains I forged in life, link by link, yard by yard..." -- his intent is to steer Scrooge toward humanity, and away from greed; he sends other ghostly allies, one per hour, to drive his message home. (this is all well-known, I think...) Marley is depicted by Dickens as being wrapped in chains, and is routinely depicted that way by costume designers, as well. The weight of the chains is a burden (plastic chains just don't "clank" in a satisfying way, so they use real ones); most actors playing Marley are grateful he's got just the one scene... although I once portrayed him in a version that has Marley narrating the piece, so it was lots of stage time with about fifty pounds of chains, emerging from a heavy satchel, weighted with sixty pounds of bricks! Fortunately, I was well-paid to do that one. And at the end of the run of performances, Max removes his costume, beginning with the chains -- easily and effortlessly, and with no will power. In fact, they're a delight to take off; one feels almost like floating (in my experience). And he walks away from them, until -- perhaps -- next year. |
