Well, I've finally gotten around to hosting a puzzle... Let's see how this goes.

Zeke became a girl. Then he was his own best friend.

Have fun!

I see where you're going, Yojimbo.

Frogs? Fish?

Is Zeke H/A/M?

True story? Location relevant? Time period relevant? Other people/critters relevant? If so, one? Two? More?

crustaceans relevant? mollusks? bivalves? univalves? No to all
(these are serious questions... but they might not look like it!) You know, on the list of questions I thought might be asked first on this puzzle, these didn't show up at all. I think you win the prize :-D

Jenburdoo

I see where you're going, Yojimbo.

Frogs? no Fish? and no

Is Zeke H/A/M? yes/no/originally, explore

True story? yes Location relevant? yope Time period relevant? yope Other people/critters relevant? yes If so, one? Two? More? there are two people total involved

Yojimbo

was I that obvious, Jenburdoo?

Does Zeke = he = his?

Did Zeke become a girl in terms of sex (i.e., having female reproductive organs and structures)? In terms of gender identification?

Thanks for the prize, Kalira, but had Zeke been a shrimp or other crustacean, etc., I would have felt bad about posting an early $poil...
does Zeke have a twin?
if so, H/Ch/M? H/Ch/F?
was Zeke's gender re-configured as a life-saving measure?
How old was Zeke when this occurred [LTPF list of children's ages, please]? is it relevant?
is the other involved person H?A?M? Zeke's parent?

is Freud relevant? only in a strange and excessively lateral way

Does Zeke = he = his? yope

Did Zeke become a girl in terms of sex (i.e., having female reproductive organs and structures)? In terms of gender identification? yes to both

LTPF lists of continents and centuries, please. 20th c. America, and 0th(?) c. Asia

Dissociative Identity Disorder relevant? no

if so, H/Ch/M? H/Ch/F?

is the other involved person H?A?M? Zeke's parent? hmmm... difficult to answer this. Perhaps I should have said there are two people involved and two yopish people involved, and there's a bit of an FA going on.

The two people involved are H/Ch/M and H/Ch/F. The two yopish people are both H/Ch/M.

Are the primary H/C/M and H/C/F actually Zeke before and after his 'transformation'?

Are the primary H/C/M and H/C/F actually Zeke before and after his 'transformation'? yes, but beware lurking FAs

Does 'became' mean something like 'changed into'? not quite - see Yojimbo's second question below for some possible help

Are we likely to know Zeke by a different name? you're not likely to know him by any name, actually

Yojimbo

Was Zeke alive in 0th c. Asia? yesish to yope
is the "gender re-assignment" literal? (or lateral?) not quite sure how to answer this... there is no surgery involved. I would call it literally a re-assignment, but my mind works in odd ways, and you definitely need a lateral leap to get you there
was Zeke always a female, but this wasn't known until 20th c. America? no

Did/does Zeke have a sister or brother? Relevant which? Multiple siblings? Half siblings? Adopted siblings? Did Zeke exchange something with a sibling? Was he best friends with his sibling, and now that he has attributes of his sibling, he's best friends with himself?

Are these events historical? Biblical? Based on existing fiction? From your imagination? which events? Those in which the yopish people are involved are Biblical, and those in which the real people are involved really happened

Is Zeke God? no

I would call it literally a re-assignment
Does "literally" in this case mean "written"? no, there was an actual re-assigning, just not in the way you're probably imagining

Twilightseeker

Did/does Zeke have a sister or brother? no Relevant which? Multiple siblings? Half siblings? Adopted siblings? Did Zeke exchange something with a sibling? Was he best friends with his sibling, and now that he has attributes of his sibling, he's best friends with himself? no to all, though the question about exchanging something with a sibling deserves a bit more exploration - you're heading in the right direction

Is there any mythical/magical/supernatural power involved here? As in something science wouldn't be able to account for. no

Yojimbo

Was Zeke a real H/Ch/[unspecified]? no or is Zeke a will-o-the-wisp (a wendy-o-the-wisp?)? that is, was Zeke a figure in folklore/myth/parable/fable? yes - he is one of the (fictional) yopish people

The reference to the cigar in the title leads me to newborn babies...any relevance to the Wolffian and Müllerian ducts in the human embryo? nope... the only newborn baby relevant to this puzzle is Jesus

Yojimbo

does Zeke appear in a story in the Bible? not as such Old Testament? New Testament? would this situation of Zeke's (his gender re-assignment) be apparent as such to a conventional student of the Bible, or does it call for a lateral puzzler?
Are the contemporary relevant Hs students of the Bible? they are elementary school students at a religious school... other than that, no
does one of the contemporary relevant Hs have a relevant sibling? actually, they both do - the two real people involved are brother and sister
a twin? sister? brother? multiple siblings?
is the story of Zeke intended to be didactic? yesish

Twilightseeker

Does Zeke exchange something with someone else's sibling? no

Is s/he a character in European folklore/myth? African, Asian, North American? Middle Eastern? Greek/Roman? Egyptian? South American? he is a character created in North America, but knowledge of North American folklore will not help at all. He is the creation of a single person, and he is only known to a smallish group of people.

Yojimbo

Joseph Smith relevant? other contemporary "prophet" or proselytizer?
sects relevant? cults? no to all; religion is relevant, but only in that the birth of Jesus is relevant to the puzzle and that the real people attend a religious school -- not really important which religion, aside from the fact that it's Christian
did we ask: era relevant? location relevant? It was asked, but it can't hurt to repeat it... There are two relevant eras and locations - 20th c. North America and 0th c. (for lack of a better term) Asia.

It has already been figured out that the 0th c. Asia setting is related to the birth of Jesus. Your HINT for the day: The 20th c. setting occurs around Christmas. I am unsure whether the major event of the 20th c. setting happens in public schools, but I know it occurs in more countries than just the United States.

Does the Christmas play refer to the Christmas story? yes Does it involve characters from the Bible? yes Is it reinterpreting the story in some way yope, depending on your def'n of reinterpretation -- I'll just tell you, the play doesn't focus on Mary, Joseph, and the baby, but rather on other characters (e.g. Mary as 20thC single mum) nothing like that. Set in 0 AD plus or minus ten years, depending on your interpretation/faith; Bible characters present; etc.? Is "Zeke" in this play a female representation of a male character? Rephrase... not quite sure what you're asking. Or a person who's generally considered to be male? ditto previous answer Anything to do with the angel Gabriel? nope. that was a whole nother year ;-)

Are there any non-Biblical characters in the play? [LTPF list of natural numbers]? Does the play include Biblical events? Non-Biblical traditions, such as the names of the magi, the donkey, etc? Newly-invented events? Does it involve shepherds? Magi? Animals?

Now, as for Zeke:
In the play, is Zeke meant to be male? Female? Is he being played by a female? Male? In the Bible/tradition, is he male/female?

Is Zeke's friend a real person? A character in the play? Is the friendship literal/lateral? Does it refer to relationships between characters in the play? Between real people? Between a real person and a character?

Now, as for Zeke:

Torquemada

A boy was going to play Zeke, but in the end, his sister played Zeke, and he played Zeke's friend? yes, and that's the...

**********SPOILER**********

Twenty years ago, a Christmas play written by one of our teachers was given at my elementary school. The main character was a young shepherd boy named Zeke, and the story followed him and (eventually) his friends from a few days before the appearance of the angel to their showing up at the birth of Jesus. My brother, who was seven, was supposed to play Zeke, but he got stage fright a week or two before the performance. I, being five, eager, and oddly unafraid, stepped in and took over the role, which included a solo song (what WAS I thinking?). My brother was reassigned to the much more minor role (I think he had three whole lines) of one of Zeke's shepherd friends, and the play went off without another hitch... though we have some lovely video footage of us cowering in fear from a four-foot tall "angel" with cardboard-based wings thanks to my mother. :-)

Thanks to all who asked questions, and especially to Torquemada for sticking with this 'til the end!
