If it had happened a few hours later, millions might have died. If it had happened fifty years later, billions might have died.

Millions/billions of people? Animals? People. While a lot of animals would have died too, they aren't relevant to the puzzle.

Okay this hasn't been asked yet:
"It" in the first sentence = "it" from the second sentence?

So "it" really happened but no one died?
Was "it" done by a person? group of people? by a chemicial reaction?
(Uh oh...I have an idea. Waiting until you answer these q's.)

(Uh oh...I have an idea. Waiting until you answer these q's.) I suspect this one is a quickie.

One more tentative poke:
Do some people believe that "it" never really happened?

One more tentative poke:
Do some people believe that "it" never really happened? No, although some believe it had other causes.

Oh...well maybe I am still in the game then...

Would anyone die if "it" had happened any earlier?
Are any of these relevant: era? country? socioeconomic status? And since it is a Jenburdoo puzzle, how about government? military? weapons? war?

Chemical reaction: explosive? Fire? Or not chemical but: biological? Nuclear? Radiation? Like a solar flare? Or gamma ray burst? Toxic/suffocating gas relevant? Kinetic energy? Like a meteor strike? The position of the earth in space at the time relevant? Did it happen on earth? Would most of the world's population have died? Instantly? Slowly?

Did something fall from space? From a high altitude? Something man-made? Natural? 50 years later: would it have triggered a nuclear war? Tunguska event relevant?

********************
SPOILER
********************

On June 30, 1908, a small meteoroid exploded in the sky over the Tunguska River in Siberia. It utterly destroyed eight hundred square miles of forest. Had it hit a few hours later, the Earth would have rotated enough so that it would have struck Moscow instead. Another few, London. Another few, New York. Fifty years later, if such an enormous explosion had struck a populated area, it probably would have been assumed to be the first strike of a nuclear war -- and all civilization would have gone down the tubes.
