Inspector Millet brought his car to a screeching halt. The ambulance was already there but the paramedics were cluelessly hanging around. An apparently shocked man was sobbing behind the wheel of a passenger car, pale as death. The Inspector approached another man, apparently a witness, who was not looking much better than the driver, and said soothingly: "There, Mr... Smith? Calm down. And please tell me what exactly did you see?" "I saw... the car hit the man. He fell to the ground... he was lying there... his shirt was ripped open... it was a bloody mess ... bowels dropping out... I have never seen such a thing in my life, Inspector. I was sick, I had to turn away and throw out. When I looked again, the man was gone." Will you help Inspector Millet solve one of his strangest cases? |

Is there anything on the ground where the man was lying? Anything on the car where it hit the man? |

Are we free to ask you any yes or no questions, or do we have to place ourselves in Inspector Millet's shoes? |

Interesting idea for a puzzle Jumpingjack. Is there blood on the ground where the man was lying? Was there blood there before he disappeared? Did the witness turn around for: a second? 5+ seconds? 10+? 30+? Relevant? Was the victim lying in the road? Roadside/ditch? Somewhere else? Is the victim now: somewhere else? Manywhere else? Disintegrated? Nonexistent? Did he exist in the first place? Anything supernatural invovled? Hallucinations? Science fiction concepts (time travel, parallel universes, teleportation, etc)? True story? Based on fiction? FYOI? Did the driver see the body when Mr. Smith was turned away? Did he do anything to the body? Or was he positioned so that he couldn't see the victim? Or did he not see what happened to the victim for some other reason? Was his car standing still when the victim disappeared? Was the car damaged from hitting the victim? Did the damage disappear as well? |

Interesting idea for a puzzle Jumpingjack. Indeed! In fact I was considering this idea for a while but then opted for the usual omniscient POV. Perhaps next time... Is there blood on the ground where the man was lying? Assume no Was there blood there before he disappeared? No Did the witness turn around for: a second? 5+ seconds? 10+? Let us say something between this... 30+? ...and this Relevant? Somehow Was the victim lying in the road? Possibly Roadside/ditch? Possibly Somewhere else? Probably not Is the victim now: somewhere else? This Manywhere else? No Disintegrated? No Nonexistent? No Did he exist in the first place? Yes Anything supernatural invovled? No Hallucinations? No Science fiction concepts (time travel, parallel universes, teleportation, etc)? Neither, sorry :-)) True story? I heard it as a true story Based on fiction? FYOI? Did the driver see the body when Mr. Smith was turned away? Probably not (remember he was in shock) Did he do anything to the body? No Or was he positioned so that he couldn't see the victim? Irr Or did he not see what happened to the victim for some other reason? He was probably so shocked that he did not look Was his car standing still when the victim disappeared? Yes Was the car damaged from hitting the victim? Possibly but not necessarily Did the damage disappear as well? If there was one, no |

Were his bowels actually dripping out? Or did the witness see something else that he thought were bowels? |

"Indeed! In fact I was considering this idea for a while but then opted for the usual omniscient POV. Perhaps next time..." I'd love to play that! =) Did Mr Smith see the bowels of the victim? or did the bowels belong to someone else? human? an animal? Was the victim hurt? Did he run away? Is he now somewhere else because he deliberately left? or did something happen to him that resulted in his disappearance? Is there a reason why the victim might not want to be seen by the paramedics/police? Is he an escaped convict perhaps? Or wanted in any way? |

Did the victim die? Or walk away? Was the victim really as gravely injured as Mr. Smith thought? Or was he dressed up/something similar? (Is the victim HAM?) Did someone else move the victim? |

Was he holding an animal at the time of being hit? if so, was this animal dead or alive (before the accident)? Or was he hiding just the bowels under his shirt? Is he a thief? Is it important to find out the exact species of this animal? |

Was he holding an animal at the time of being hit? No if so, was this animal dead or alive (before the accident)? Or was he hiding just the bowels under his shirt? Yes; it would be more precise to say there were various internal organs Is he a thief? Yes Is it important to find out the exact species of this animal? Sort of; there could have been various animals, actually |

So a man stole some internal organs, hid them under his shirt, got hit by a car, then ran off because he didn't want the police to know that he had stolen them, right? What remains to be found, then, is why he stole the internal organs, and where he stole them from? is there anything else we need to solve? Are the internal organs those of an endangered species? Is he involved in illegal trade? Or perhaps he just felt like a nice meal of entrails for his dinner that night? (nothing can be ruled out in a lateral puzzle! =P ) |

Did he steal the organs for food? If so, food for himself? For his family? For someone else? Did he steal them to sell? Or to use? If not for food, were they for research? To gross someone out? For some sort of supposed health benefit? |

That's odd, I thought I had a post here! Hmm. Anyway, what I asked was 'is he intending on exporting the organs?' |

Is he planning on selling them to an individual? a group? if the latter, is this group an illegal organisation? will they be aware that he has stolen the organs? Is it relevant that they are the internal organs and not other parts of the animal? |

Were the organs stolen from: a slaughterhouse? Farm? Did the thief do anything besides steal the organs as they were? Like actually slaughter the animal? Was he asked/told to steal the organs? |

Were the organs stolen from: a slaughterhouse? This Farm? Did the thief do anything besides steal the organs as they were? Assume no Like actually slaughter the animal? Irr Was he asked This /told to steal the organs? There is now very little left to be guessed - who was the thief and what he was doing with the organs. And once this puzzle is finished, I've decided to take up Jumpingjack's gauntlet, and publish a new Inspector Millet's case, this time allowing anyone to place him/herself into the Inspector's shoes. |

Were the organs stolen as food for: Human(s)? Animal(s)? Did the man have any connection to the slaughterhouse? Was he an employee? Did he hide the organs in order to get past someone? Or did he break in when nobody was there? Was he asked to steal them by someone related to the slaughterhouse? Was his motive: profit? Kindness towards the recipient? Malice towards the slaughterhouse? A dare or wager? Other? |

So a guy working at a slaughterhouse sneaks out some organs under his shirt, to sell to someone else. He is hit by a car and the organs falls out of his torn shirt, making it look like he is gravely injured. However he is mostly okay, and when the witness is distracted he gets up and runs way to avoid discovery. Anything more to discover? |

I think you've guessed enough for me to publish the ************SPOILER******************* In fact, most of it is included in your last post. The guy is stealing meat from the slaughterhouse and selling it to a restaurant owner. You have the rest spot on. Gee, I did not think it would be such a quickie (but, knowing your clever lateral minds, I should have at least suspected, shouldn't I? Inspector Millet thanks you all for your help in so efficiently solving his case, and in particular to Galfisk to have the guts to give the final answer. |
