A mobile phone? Yes Was it a phone number? Yes Was it a phone number of a friend? Yes Relative? No Did he expect the number? No Hope for it? In the deepest corner of his soul, yes Did he recognize it immediately? Let us say yes for the purposes of this puzzle; see next answer Or did he compare it with a note or similar? This would be also very likely but in this case, he would smile a bit later - after having compared the number to the note Will his circumstances improve as a result of the number? I'd say no in a material way, and very much so at the psychological level Would any other number have worked? No Does the screen show anything in addition to the number? No |

Is the question about one of Edgar's movies? Was Albert involved in any of his movies? Does Charlie suspect he also was invovled - perhaps as a baby? Or does he want to ask something else about his childhood? Some kind of feud relevant? (Since war is not relevant in the usual sense) Other kind of personal conflict? |

A recap would be nice to summarize what's going on. OK. Here goes the RECAP: Charlie sees a number on his grandfather Albert's cell phone. When the number appears on the screen, Albert and Charlie are together but Albert does not see or hear the telephone. As Charlie had seen the number before on a note (we assume he has a really good memory), he identifies the caller as a famous western actor Edgar. When he sees the number, it makes him feel relieved, reassured, and almost happy. Charlie has never met Edgar personally but he very likely admires him. He had heard about him from Albert. It is likely that he might receive from Edgar an information relating to one specific thing in the past, yet it is sufficient just to see the number for him to feel as he feels. Hope that's all :-)) Was he in Westerns? Yes indeed! |

Is he happy: just for himself? Also from Albert? Relevant what Albert has told Charlie about Edgar? If Albert had seen the number, would he have felt the same way? Albert had tried to reach Edgar, correct? Has he felt down because he hasn't been able to? Is the reason why they lost touch important? Does Edgar still act in movies? Or otherwise appear in the media? Relevant? If he does not, is it relevant what he does nowadays? |

Is he happy: just for himself? Not just for himself... Also from Albert? ...but for Albert, too. Relevant what Albert has told Charlie about Edgar? Very much so If Albert had seen the number, would he have felt the same way? Not exactly the same way but he would probably have been happy and a bit relieved Albert had tried to reach Edgar, correct? Correct Has he felt down because he hasn't been able to? Exactly so Is the reason why they lost touch important? Moderately Does Edgar still act in movies? Yes Or otherwise appear in the media? He has also other activities related to the media Relevant? For our puzzle? I'd say a bit, because Charlie who is very young perceives him as a hero, too. However, I'd say his former activities are far more relevant than his present ones If he does not, is it relevant what he does nowadays? See above; we do not necessarily have to reveal Edgar's exact identity to be able to solve the puzzle (although it might help); what is important for us is the fact that in his time he was a very famous Western actor and that he is famous up to date |

Did Albert tell Charlie about: being in movies with Edgar? Yesish, worth exploring How they met? Not relevant Something they did together? Yesish, worth exploring A specific event? Yes - he probably named specific movies they were in, but for us it is all we need to know, it would not be worth the trouble to guess their specific titles. How good friends they were? This is most relevant of all How they lost touch? No How much he wants to get in touch/misses him? Noish Something that happened after they lost touch? No Something also involving Charlie? No His parents? No |

He is not a relative; however, there is some sort of relationship between Edgar and Albert Were Edgar and Albert childhood friends? No closer than brothers? No, not that close Is Charlie happy because Edgar may be willing to provide the eulogy? No; however, he does provide some sort of eulogy Because Edgar has information that Charlie needs? Possibly, but the main cause stems from the mere fact he is calling Because Edgar can do something for Albert? No or Charlie? No |

No Did he want to ask something Albert wanted to ask when he called? No HINT: Charlie would probably want to ask Edgar something but this is not as relevant as the mere fact he is calling. did Albert die in the last few days? You mean before the phone call takes place? Yes; it would be helpful to investigate a closer time frame Relevant? Yesish Relevant how he died? Hi, I have just read through this puzzle... Albert has been trying to get in touch with his long-lost, famous friend, but then he tragically died (a few minutes before the actions of this puzzle?). Then as his grandson, Charlie mourns Albert (next to his deathbed?), he sees his mobile phone ring and realises that Edgar has finally rung him back, which, despite the circumstances, makes him smile. Is this correct? Is Charlie's life also in danger, or has Albert died of natural causes? or something like a car accident? is it relevant (how he died)? |

How about a recap / hint to liven this one up a bit, Alhucema? :-) I will do my best, but I am afraid it will take me some time Hi, I have just read through this puzzle... Hi, Amu, I am very pleased you joined in Albert has been trying to get in touch with his long-lost, famous friend, but then he tragically died (a few minutes before the actions of this puzzle?) Spot on. Then as his grandson, Charlie mourns Albert Yes (next to his deathbed?)No, as it is almost immediately after his death , he sees his mobile phone ring and realises that Edgar has finally rung him back, which, despite the circumstances, makes him smile. Yes Is this correct? Basically, yes, but there is one more important aspect to it yet to reveal Is Charlie's life also in danger No, or has Albert died of natural causes No? or something like a car accident No? is it relevant (how he died)? It is a very interesting detail, yet the puzzle statement would work even without it. |

It sounds to me like Albert and Edgar were lovers! Were they? If so, does Charlie know this? Before Albert died, he was trying to get in touch with Edgar, correct? Did he do this out of his own initiative? Did he want to get back in touch because he missed him? Because he wanted to prove to Charlie that he really did know Edgar? Had Charlie always thought that Albert had been lying to him about it, and the fact that Edgar's calling shows that his grandfather wasn't a liar after all? When you say 'yesish' about him being in movies with Edgar--did he actually act alongside Edgar? or did he work behind-the-scenes? Is Albert also famous? or was he? When Edgar didn't return Albert's call, Albert was down, correct? Was this because he thought that Edgar was angry with him? Didn't care about him anymore? Was in trouble? |

Not really Because he wanted to prove to Charlie that he really did know Edgar? Yes! Yesish Was Albert also famous? No or was he? No When Edgar didn't return Albert's call, Albert was down, correct? Correct Was this because he thought that Edgar was angry with him? Yesish Oh, I thought Charlie was glad because it proved that his grandfather hadn't been lying to him about knowing Edgar? Yes, of course you are right. I forgot that we have already established this. Sorry for that. Or is there something more to it? No, and sorry again Is what Charlie thinks logical? Does he make a mistake? Did Charlie suspect that Edgar might have had a hand in the murder of Albert? No I have read the puzzle all over, and I realized that you have already established the relevant "why" in the puzzle statement. The "how and why Albert died" is interesting as such but does not influence the solution as I have put it. I will leave the puzzle for some more time and ask you to post a short summary, and then I will spoyle. |

Attempt at a summary: Charlie's grandfather always told stories to Charlie about how, when he was younger, he was friends with Clint Eastwood when he was working as his stunt double in western movies. Charlie did not believe this, and therefore his grandfather tried to contact Clint to prove it. However, it is not as easy to get in touch with Clint Eastwood nowadays as one would think, and he has as yet not returned his call. However, on the day Albert died, in fact a few minutes after his death as Charlie was standing over his grandfather's body mourning him, Albert's phone rang - Charlie recognised Clint's number, which put a smile on his face realising his grandfather's last wish (?) has come true - he proved it to Charlie that his tales were true. I am interested in how Albert died. Did he know he was dying, was his last wish to hear from Clint, was his life support switched off? Long shot: Did he jump off the bridge Clint jumps off in one of his movies? |

OK, I will not torment you anymore - I am posting the ***************SPOILER*************** This puzzle was based on a Spanish film „800 bullets“. WARNING - the following text contains several spoylers for those who had not seen the film. Albert (Julián in the movie) is an old stuntman who lived his best days when American westerns were shot in southern Spain. However, these times are long gone and forgotten and Julián now makes a poor living in the decaying film village near the city of Almería once used in the westerns along with his old colleagues, doing stunt shows for tourists. Julián’s son, also a stuntman, died while doing a stunt with his father, who still feels guilty about it, even more so because his own ex-wife and his daughter-in-law – Laura - broke all contacts with him, and even told his grandson (Charlie – Carlos in the film) that his grandfather was dead. Carlos – who is a bit of tearaway – learns that his grandfather is still alive, and joins him. Julián tells him stories how he acted a stunt double for Clint Eastwood. But Laura, who is a powerful executive looking for a new site for a tourist resort, decides to kill two birds with one stone and build it by destroying the old film village, thus purposefully ruining Julián’s life. Julián decides to fight back but feels gradually abandoned by all his former colleagues, and finally by Carlos himself. In the last desperate attempt to retain his grandson’s confidence, he claims again that he was a good friend of Clint Eastwood, and to prove it, he takes a paper where he noted Eastwood’s phone number years ago, and calls him. Someone answers the call and says Mr Eastwood cannot take the call right now. Desperate, Julián leaves a message that he had called. Carlos now thinks that Julián has lied to him, and leaves with his mother. The desperate Julián defies a colleague stuntman who used to play the „baddie“ in their show for the tourists, and who in reality hates him, to put live ammo instead of blanks in his pistol, and is killed by him. Meanwhile, Laura and Carlos return, only to find Julián’s dead body. When Carlos cries over it, Julián’s mobile phone rings and Clint Eastwood’s number appears on it – a proof that Julián was not lying after all. Clint Eastwood is even present at Julián’s funeral, telling Charlie that he and his grandfather had been good friends. An interesting detail – the director of the film, Álex de la Iglesia, wanted the real Clint Eastwood in the film (he appears just for several seconds), and was even willing to go to the States to make the scene with him, but Clint declined, claiming he was too busy, so they had to use another actor, obscuring his face. Thank you all for participating! |
