You missed: Indeed I did. Does the family have a leak in their heating source? Yes. Is their fireplace clogged? Possibly, or otherwise damaged. ***SPOILER*** The residents of the house had many strange experiences, such as the one detailed in the puzzle, and it seemed that the house was haunted. In reality, the old heating system was badly damaged and released toxic carbon monoxide fumes throughout the house. When the heating system was repaired, all "paranormal" activity stopped.
