"If you're happy and you know it..." relevant?

Was the person clapping a thief? Or did the clapping indicate to the listener that the person was, in fact, not a thief? A child, perhaps?

Spot on! Well done

************** SPOILER **************

This was in a book telling the story of a man buying and restoring a property in Casablanca. The man in the anecdote would pray every time there was a call to prayer. He would pray in his small shop in a souk and left his son to keep an eye on the cash box. But he had to keep clapping because his father wasn't sure whether he'd be able to resist the temptation of taking a little bit.

Oh that was a twist I didn't expect - clapping so he couldn't do anything else with his hands! Great puzzle, would have kept me guessing for a few more posts for sure though!

Wasn't sure whether I spoiled too soon, but it was the principle that you got and the details may have gone all over the place to no great effect.
