*************RECAP**** Tom and Kara were part of a group that was playing Charades; they were on opposite teams. No one in the group could see the mirror, any reflection, or any object that helped them cheat. Tom had an associate with whom he was using American Sign Language to cheat, or at least gain an unfair advantage. Tom is not deaf, but his confederate is. The "mirror" is a reflective surface that could be called a mirror, but also has other terms to describe it. It is flat, and not made of metal or silvered glass. It has several parts that hold it up-ish, but is not a wall mirror or a compact. This mirror is used in the deaf community, in a field related to communication, and the nature of it is the only major thing left to find out. | ||

Did she see Tom and Sam making hand gestures during the game, but thought nothing more of it until she saw Sam's device, and realised that the 'gestures' were probably ASL? | ||

Oisin (Oisin) Yes to all! Nice work sticking with it. And to wrap up any confusion: *************SPOILER Tom and Kara are relatives, playing a serious game of Charades with their family. Tom invites his new friend Sam along to play. And whenever Tom must give or receive clues with Sam, they understand each other almost instantly! It's like they have their own language! Later, Kara happens to glance into a bag belonging to Sam (or a purse; I was imagining a girl, but it really doesn't matter). She sees a plastic panel and recognizes it as a part of the Rear Window Captioning System, which helps hearing-impaired people enjoy movies in theaters. In the theater, subtitles are displayed along the rear wall, and by using this special mirror, the individual can see them and the screen at the same time. Kara realizes that Tom and Sam were speaking a language to each other during the game, one that Sam must have taught Tom because he is hearing-impaired--American Sign Language. She doesn't hesitate to call them out as cheaters. |
