Though it had been nowhere near the room where the game was played, when Kara saw the mirror, she called Tom a cheater. |

Well, it's a great Radiohead song, so I'll bite... Was the "game" played a literal one? Cards/board game/sport? Was the mirror smaller than a bread box? Were there fingerprints on it? Anything relevant on it? Does the location of the mirror (when she sees it) make a difference? Was tom actually a cheater? |

Is the mirror visible from anywhere in the room where the game is being played? In order to be a "cheater, would Tom have had to look at himself in the mirror? at something else? shine a light into the mirror? |

So Tom did something which is considered as cheating by some peolpe including Kara? Did he use the mirror for it? Are dice used in the game? Coins or chips? A ball? Does the result of the game, if played without cheating, usually depend on luck? Strategy? Fitness? Was the game played by Kara? By Tom? Did they play against each other? Did they form (part of) a team? |

Is it a wargame? Did Kara believe Tom used a mirror to cheat? Did she see some evidence in the mirror that he had cheated? Did she need to see something in the mirror? Is the mirror itself relevant (for example, is its size, shape, location or state of cleanliness/disrepair relevant)? Or would any mirror have done? This is a literal, physical mirror, such as the glass/silver thing you find in a bathroom? Or is it something that can act as a mirror, such as a spoon or a pane of glass? Or a metaphorical mirror, like a mirror into the soul? |

Did Kara, when she saw the mirror, think something like "that type of mirror, at that place, would surely be there for cheating"? but she didn't think it had anything to do with cheating in the actual game she and Tom were in? Was Tom winning in the game? so that Kara could suspect him of cheating? and the sighting of the mirror could reinforce that suspicion? Was the game played just for the fun of it? for money? for more serious stakes? |

*************RECAP**** Tom and Kara were part of a group that was playing Charades; they were on opposite teams. No one in the group could see the mirror, any reflection, or any object that helped them cheat. Tom had an associate with whom he was using American Sign Language to cheat, or at least gain an unfair advantage. Tom is not deaf, but his confederate is. The "mirror" is a reflective surface that could be called a mirror, but also has other terms to describe it. It is flat, and not made of metal or silvered glass. It has several parts that hold it up-ish, but is not a wall mirror or a compact. This mirror is used in the deaf community, in a field related to communication, and the nature of it is the only major thing left to find out. |

The mirror is used in communication (ish): Is it used when communicating in a dialogue with another person? or when receiving communications (if so: radio? TV? video? telephone? subtitles?) or in knowing that someone is trying to open communications? (doorbell? telephone? TTY?) When using the mirror, is the deaf person looking in it? the person they are communicating with? are they looking at something they could not see without the mirror? something about themselves? something behind them? something around a corner? Is the mirror surface a passive reflector, or does it enhance the image somehow? magnify? Does the mirror need electrical power? Would the deaf person carry it with them, or would it normally be kept in the same place in the house? If the latter, is the place it's kept relevant? |

Oisin (Oisin) The mirror is used in communication (ish): Is it used when communicating in a dialogue with another person? No. or when receiving communications (if so: radio? TV? video? telephone? subtitles? This!) or in knowing that someone is trying to open communications? (doorbell? telephone? TTY?) No to rest. When using the mirror, is the deaf person looking in it? Yes. the person they are communicating with? No. are they looking at something they could not see without the mirror? Yes. something about themselves? something behind them? This. something around a corner? Is the mirror surface a passive reflector, or does it enhance the image somehow? magnify? Passive reflector, although I believe it reflects some things while being translucent itself. Does the mirror need electrical power? No. Would the deaf person carry it with them, or would it normally be kept in the same place in the house? This, unless they are going somewhere they will use it. If the latter, is the place it's kept relevant? Yope: usually, or in the puzzle? |

OK - I think I've seen this device being used on See Hear; it's a sort of subtitling viewer for use in cinemas, where you can see through the device and also see subtitles reflected from the back of the cinema. As far as I remember, they liked the idea, but the device itself was difficult to set up, distracting to others, and affected the colour of the film. Is this the mirror? |

I believe they're making sleeker models that can be set so that only the user sees the words, and they run right along the bottom of the screen. But I can see how it's still not ideal. Anyway, care to put it all together? |

Is the game of charades taking place at the deaf teammate's (let's call him Sam) house? Or has the group been to the cinema, and Sam has brought his subtitle mirror along? Did Kara know beforehand that Tom knew ASL? That Sam was deaf? Did she see Tom and Sam making hand gestures during the game, but thought nothing more of it until she saw Sam's device, and realised that the 'gestures' were probably ASL? |

Oisin (Oisin) Yes to all! Nice work sticking with it. And to wrap up any confusion: *************SPOILER Tom and Kara are relatives, playing a serious game of Charades with their family. Tom invites his new friend Sam along to play. And whenever Tom must give or receive clues with Sam, they understand each other almost instantly! It's like they have their own language! Later, Kara happens to glance into a bag belonging to Sam (or a purse; I was imagining a girl, but it really doesn't matter). She sees a plastic panel and recognizes it as a part of the Rear Window Captioning System, which helps hearing-impaired people enjoy movies in theaters. In the theater, subtitles are displayed along the rear wall, and by using this special mirror, the individual can see them and the screen at the same time. Kara realizes that Tom and Sam were speaking a language to each other during the game, one that Sam must have taught Tom because he is hearing-impaired--American Sign Language. She doesn't hesitate to call them out as cheaters. |
