Let me see if this sequence of events is correct: -People see the water start to approach. -They are worried a tsunami might be coming. -The water is sucked back. -They conclude they are safe outside, and remain there. -The big wave (tsunami) comes and kills a lot of them. This good? |

This good? No. Could I just clarify... they never expected a tsunami or were worried about it-hint Numbers 3 and 5 are the only completely correct ones, though 4 is a mistleading. Also, there is FA about the waves: you still need to know 1. why they thought they were saved (there's more to this) and 2. why they thought the receding waters were a sign that they were saved. |

Did the people run out of the buildings when they collapsed?Yes Then thought they were safe, but were killed by the tsunami?Yes Hint/Summary: There was an earthquake. Buildings collapsed. People saw the receding waters and escaped the burning/collapsing buildings. However, a tsunami killed lots of people before they could escape. There's still more to why they thought they were "saved." |

Did they think they were safe near the sea? Safe from: fire? Further building collapses? Some other consequence of the earthquake? Did they escape from the city and onto the newly bared seabed? Where they thought they were safe from the fire and collapsing buildings? And thinking how fortunate it was that the sea has receeded and given them a safe place to escape to? Until it came back with a vengeance? |

Did they think it was a miracle? That they were saved by god? Or that someone else made the water recede? |

Did the water recede before the collapse? During? Just after? |

Did the water recede before the collapse? During? It probably started during the collapse, though this is not really that relevant Just after? |

Did the water recede and open up a very large portion of the seabed? Was any part of the seabed normally open? |

Did the water recede and open up a very large portion of the seabed? Yes Was any part of the seabed normally open? No, I assume you meant to ask whether the receding waters exposed more of the seabed than was ever seen |

So the people assumed God had opened up the seabed for them to escape to? And they fled there? And were killed by the tsunami? |

So the people assumed God had opened up the seabed for them to escape to? And they fled there? And were killed by the tsunami? Yes to all, but what made them so convinced it was God? |

Had they just prayed for salvation from the collapse? Were they in church? Did they escape it just before it collapsed? |

Balin: Had they just prayed for salvation from the collapse? No Were they in church? Yes, most Did they escape it just before it collapsed? Not everyone; many people were in church when the earthquake started It_so_happened: NO This is certainly enough, without finding out the exact earthquake this is referring to. Thus, SPOILER<br/> This earthquake happened on November 1, a Catholic holiday. Many were in church when the shaking started. Lots of buildings collapsed or burned. It being a holiday and everyone being in church, the receding waters were interpreted as salvation from God. Half of an hour later there was a tsunami which killed many survivors of the quake. More details here. |
