"That wasn't the end of it, it only broke off!" she exclaimed, horrified. But it wasn't what she had thought it was, which was a great relief, but now she had a real cause to worry.

Let me write it as follows: "That wasn't the end of it-1, it-2 only broke off!" she exclaimed, horrified. But it-3 wasn't what she had thought it was, which was a great relief, but now she had a real cause to worry.

Does it-2 = it-1? a part of it-1?
Does it-3 = it-1? it-2? or does it-3 refer to the process of breaking it-2 off?

Does it-2 = it-1? yes a part of it-1? yes - a part of it broke off
Does it-3 = it-1? it-2? both of these or does it-3 refer to the process of breaking it-2 off?

Is "it" an object? Solid? Liquid? Metal? Wood? Glass? Plastic? Plaster? Other?
