Before I got the opportunity to work at a bird tagging facility, I was under the assumption that you checked the nets for caught birds often, just to be kind to the birds and shorten their suffering. However, I soon learned the real reason why you check the nets every 15 minutes and it was a lot more interesting and lateral than I had imagined. No special zoological knowledge is required to solve this puzzle. With some luck and good thinking, you'll figure it out really fast. |

Hmm... any of the following relevant? The birds' welfare? Accuracy of information collected? State of the net? Birds fighting? Breeding? |

Was your going to the net every so often perceived by the birds, or by other animals? Is this relevant? |

Was your going to the net every so often perceived by the birds, or by other animals? Is this relevant? Everytime we went to the nets, we removed all the birds that had been caught, so off course these birds were well aware of us. But there is more to this, and it's relevant. You're on the right track. Could you please rephrase so I don't give away too much for free? |

Is it relevant that birds not caught in the net (just hanging around) see you guys checking the net? Is it for them to get used to you? |

Certainly... Your going to the nets was seen by animals who weren't in the nets? Perhaps this kept predators away from the nets, thus protecting the birds who would be caught? |

Is it to get the birds out of the nets so the predators don't eat them? So the predators stay away from the nets? |

So it's to protect the birds from other animals? Other birds? Are they deterred by your sight? Your smell? Are you doing something additional to the nets that helps to deter the animals? |

Might the predators get stuck in the net too? Is this what you're trying to avoid? |

Will a predator stuck in the net scare away other birds, meaning you won't catch as many? Or will other stuck birds warn and/or scare away other birds? |

Do you take the predators out of the net? Do you keep them in a separate area where they won't bother the birds you want to tag? |

Do you take the predators out of the net? yes Do you keep them in a separate area where they won't bother the birds you want to tag? yes, but we tagged the predators as well * * * SPOILER * * * Once in a while, the small birds stuck in the net would attract a falcon or a hawk. These bigger birds didn't really get caught in the nets cause they are strong enough to pull free, though they had to sit in/on the net when eating their prey. By coming to the nets often, we could, if lucky, take the predator by surprise and grab it before it flew off. Tagging falcons are always greater fun than tagging sparrows. =) So off course, we did care about the birds wellfare, but when it couldn't be helped and it was too late, we were also happy to catch bigger birds. |
