Verona often says, "Thank you, doctor," to salesclerks, cashiers, bank tellers, and other service personnel. She knows that they aren't doctors. How come? |

Is she expressing sincere gratitude? For the services that they normally render? Is she being sarcastic? Is this always in response to something specific that the service personnel say? Does the "doctor" refer to the person she's talking to? Or is she quoting someone? Referring to something she once said? Is one specific doctor relevant? The medical profession general? Something that is normally associated with doctors? |

Do the salesclerks etc. claim to be doctors? Expect Verona to believe they are? Expect someone else to believe they are? Is something illegal going on? A crime? Is this a kind of game? Is Verona HAF? Are the salesclerks etc. HAF? Does Verona say "Thank you, doctor" as a part of her job? Is her profession relevant? |

Do the sales personnel say whatever it is when Verona first arrives? When asking if they can help her? While performing whatever service applies? While taking her money? While giving her change? When she leaves? Things that are associated with doctors... something doctors normally say? a tool they use? their education? the diagnosis procedure? the treatment procedure? tests of some sort? waiting rooms? nurses? bad handwriting? Does the relevant "something" apply equally to general-practice diagnosticians? pediatricians? OBGYNs? surgeons? specialists? anaesthesiologists? nurses? pharmacists? phDs? |

The crucial thing about doctors is their high social status. Salesclerks & bank tellers, of course, do not have high social status. So Verona is calling people in low-status occupations by a high-status title &, as mentioned earlier, she's being sarcastic & doing it to make a point. Is she being a jerk? That's a matter of opinion, but I think she's making a reasonable point in view of what the service personnel have said to her.So find out what they said that elicits this response!! |

Well, I feel your pain with the cross-posting thing. Welcome to the forum, by the way! (Any idea why your posts are in a different font than the rest of ours? That's a bit strange...) |

hi ohlala and thanks. in fact i have been a member of the lpf for about 10 years but havent been in for a while - and would you believe i cant remember my password - not even sure of the exact format of my name - though i know it was just my first and second names. so i reregistered some time ago and have just reintroduced myself to the site - hopefully with enough time on my hands to put some effort into the puzzles. im a chronic insomniac so you will find me in here at all sorts of odd times - australian time - as far as the font goes - im still struggling with remembering the formatting protocol. the best i have come up with so far from the instructions is \ 0 { at the beginning of the text then closing the parentheses at the end. i am wading through the instructions but clearly havent come up with the right combination yet. any help would be appreciated. |

is it a language difficulty? is it something that verona is perfectly comfortable with? but the service person seems to think she is in some way impaired? is it a physical trait? aesthetic? would most people believe it to be an impairment? is it something verona was born with? something that "happened" to her? is it something verona chooses to do/have? like a way of speaking, wearing certain clothes, acting in a certain way? is it a cultural issue for verona? for the service person? |

Do they think she's older than she is? Younger? Do they call her a standard female title (Miss, ms, mrs, madam, ma'am, etc)? A word more or less synonymous with "woman"? A word more or less synonymous with "old person"? Would they call any 45-60 year old woman this? Would any 45-60 year old woman take offense? |

(Hi Kerry!! Still here after all these years?) do they call her by an endearment? 'my dear'? 'my love'? do they use an over-familiar expression? one usually used within families? is the basic idea that they use an expression that one might usually expect someone of a high social status to use to someone of a lower status? specifically someone middle aged of a low status? |

Do they call her young lady? And her point is "I'm not a young lady any more than you're a doctor, and calling you a doctor isn't a compliment"? Yes, that's it exactly!!!! ******** SPOILER ****************** Verona is somewhere between approximately 40 & 65 & she looks it. When she goes shopping, cashiers & other service personnel sometimes end the transaction by saying, "Thank you, young lady." Since Verona knows that she doesn't look like a young lady & resents the suggestion that pretending that she is one is a compliment, she says, "Thank you, doctor," to get across the idea that it's insulting to "compliment" someone by suggesting that what he really is isn't good enough. Thanks for solving it, Ohlala, and please direct that clever lateral mind to the bottom of the page, where a new puzzle awaits some attention. |
