If they had not disposed of the garbage, would they have: been somewhere else? Done something else? Die for certain? Was the garbage dangerous? Were they working together at disposing garbage? Was it their job? did they get paid for it? Was it their garbage? Relevant how it was disposed of? Or where? Was it being dumped? Compacted? Burned? Relevant what the garbage was? Or can we assume household waste? |

Or did they dump it for some other reason, and it led to their lives being saved? War relevant? did they create the garbage? Has there been a disaster? Is the boatish thing part of a boat? Is it wreckage? A raft? |

Was the garbage used as a decoy? Ruse? Are they on a sub? Would their boatish have been destroyed by the enemy otherwise? Were they being chased? Fired at? Bombed? Torpedoed? |

Was the garbage used as a decoy? Yes. Ruse? Yes. Are they on a sub? Yes. Would their boatish have been destroyed by the enemy otherwise? Yes. Were they being chased? Fired at? Bombed? Torpedoed? *************** Silent Spoiler *************** A common tactic for subs that were depthcharged was to launch garbage through an empty torpedo tube -- papers and debris, leaking oil, or even the occasional dead crewmember. When this wreckage reached the surface, it sometimes (but not always!) fooled the enemy into thinking he had sunk the boat and breaking off his attack. |
