The world: The earth? Life on earth? Human civilization? Or some part of it? Did this happen in modern times? Music: real actual music created by humans? A specific musical piece? Or recording? Or performance? Is the music in form of a song? Was the world saved from something? A disaster? War? Disease? Pollution? A person? Something trivial? |

RECAP: An American saved the world as a result of music being played over a PA system. Two other people are relevant; one is Japanese, and the other is foreign (I'm not sure from where - I think somewhere in the Middle East). The world would have ended through bombings and war, which the foreign person was trying to start. The Japanese person was misled-ish, but the American was not-ish. HINTS: Video games are relevant, and the song is from the 1980s. |

I haven't see this show - so more questions... Are the words to the song relevant? Do we need to determine which song was played? Was the song played to convey a "message" to the Japanese person? to the foreign person? to the American? If the song was NOT played, would one of our 3 people do something to cause the destruction? If so, which person - American? Japanese? Unknown Foreigner? (If these keeps going, we are going to have to give these guys some names!) |

Does John receive a phone call from the 4th person? No - John contacts Person 4 using a communication watch (spy gadget). Are any relevant people in the room with John while he's playing the game? Only the person who turns the music on, who is otherwise irrelevant. Person #4? No Abdul? No Does John leave the room he's in after finishing the game? Or does he stay there? So...John's playing Missile Command, THEN hears a certain song, THEN contacts person 4, THEN stays in the room - is this chronology accurate? Noish - as a HINT, the events all occurred in under 10 minutes, John never leaves the room throughout the entire time, and he has no reason to leave. And the last thing he does is contact Person 4. Is the song by Gordon Lightfoot? No |

Does John work for Nancy? If John had opted to play another game instead of MC, would he still have contacted Nancy? Same question if a different song had been played. |

Ok, let's try this: from the lyrics and description of the song, it's about a sort of rebel/hero with a boyish persona. So, perhaps the way to communicate with John in a way he will appreciate is not to simply call him or transmit a message, but provide an example in a game and with a song that describes his personality? The game shows what is about to happen and John knows how to stop it? And this is the best method to cause him to act? |

Did John need to achieve a certain score on the game? Yes, and I'll just tell you this part: he had to beat it and reach the kill screen (which doesn't actually exist in real life). Was he good at the game? Yes Is this why he called Nancy after the game? Yes, but there's more to it. Did Tanaka communicate a message to John via the game? YES!! (although anyone who had beaten the game would have gotten the message) |

You've got most of it now...John (really Chuck) has to beat Missile Command to reach a kill screen, where he gets the code to deactivate the satellite. He relays this code to Nancy, who actually does the deactivation. Now how are the song and game related? |

Did the song begin at the same time that John started playing the game? Is it relevant to know how long it took John to reach the kill screen? It seems it would take him a lot longer to beat the game than the length of the song, which I think is approx. 4 1/2 minutes. |

Yes, see below It seems it would take him a lot longer to beat the game than the length of the song, which I think is approx. 4 1/2 minutes. In the episode, the song length equals the length of the game. Obviously, this would not work in real life, as Missile Command doesn't even have a kill screen IRL. |

Does John do anything else relevant prior to playing the game? Does he go into the room specifically to play the game? Does he just really like "Tom Sawyer"? Does it help him focus? Play fast? ...listen to the song and play the game well based on some kind of pattern or rhythm in the song? Pretty much, so... **********SPOILER********** As has been determined, this comes from an episode of Chuck (Season 2 Episode 4, "Chuck Versus Tom Sawyer"). In order to help you understand the puzzle scenario, I'm going to recap the main plot of the episode. So, Chuck ("John" in the puzzle) works at an electronics store, but he's also a spy. He recognizes someone who comes into the store as global terrorist Farrokh ("Abdul" in the puzzle) - Farrokh is looking for one of Chuck's coworkers, Jeff (not in the puzzle). Chuck meets up with his handlers, Sarah ("Nancy" in the puzzle) and Casey (not in the puzzle), and they realize that they need to figure out what Farrokh wants with Jeff. Chuck and Jeff hang out, and Jeff shows Chuck a video tape from 25 years ago, after he set the high score in Missile Command. In the video, the creator of the game, Morimoto ("Tanaka" in the puzzle) gives Jeff a plaque, and Chuck realizes Morimoto was working for the Japanese government as a scientist. (How did he realize that?...Well, that would also require a recap of the whole show.) The next day, Sarah tells Chuck that Morimoto was not only a video game designer, but also a weapons satellite creator. Our three spies head over to Atari and Chuck gets into Morimoto's office, but Farrokh locks him in. Chuck finds Morimoto playing Missile Command while listening to "Tom Sawyer," and Morimoto explains that the song provides the proper rhythm to beat the game. He also tells Chuck that: -the code for the satellite is hidden in the kill screen, -Farrokh saw Morimoto reach the kill screen and thus knows the code, and -every Missile Command game has the code in the kill screen. Chuck sees that Morimoto's game is wired to explode if he loses, but Casey is able to get Chuck out before the explosion. The spies reassemble and learn that the military is planning to launch a missile at the satellite to destroy it; however, there will still be collateral damage. Chuck realizes that there is another way - to use the code from the Missile Command kill screen. However, they need to beat the game, and Chuck thinks that the only one who can do that is Jeff. To make a long story short (too late), they assemble an audience and have an arcade machine brought in, but Jeff passes out and cannot play. Chuck is forced to play instead, so while the military prepares to launch the missile, he tries to beat the game...and fails. One of the guys in the audience yells that "[Chuck] sucks," and Chuck sees that he's wearing a Rush T-shirt. Now we get to the puzzle scenario. Chuck realizes that the pattern for the song "Tom Sawyer" matches the pattern for shooting the missiles in the game, so he gets his friend Morgan (not in the puzzle scenario) to play the song over the PA system as he inserts a quarter. He is able to reach the kill screen, and he relays the code to Sarah (who has knocked out Farrokh and his men). She inputs the code, deactivating the satellite just before the military missile is launched. Music saved the world. Here's a video showing this section of the episode...unfortunately, it ends right before the kill screen, but it's still an awesome video. It cuts between the three characters - Chuck, Sarah, and Casey - trying to disable the satellite in their own environments (Chuck at the video game, Sarah taking out Farrokh and his men, and Casey arming the missile). Excellent job on this long puzzle, everyone, notably Galfisk for the early work, Kaygee for determining the show (and saving the puzzle right before I was about to kill it for inaction), and Ixoye for pretty much everything else! |

Whew! Very good puzzle - I'm not sure I understand how a song's pattern can match something in a video game, but that's beside the point. |

Good point - apparently, Morimoto created the game to match the song pattern, so it would be possible for him to reach the kill screen/code if needed. Nice job solving it! |
