Reading it only confirmed what Eric already knew - he knew because he hadn't heard the song. But the language only made it worse. What's going on here? Eric = he #1 = he #2 |

Is he reading a letter? Is he being dumped? Does 'it' contain a quotation from a song? Is it written in Eric's native language? Random guess: Is he reading Braille? |

It's bad news, then? He has failed an audition, perhaps? An exam? A job interview? Is it a paper copy? An email? Something on a website? Is it a bad review? A negative critique from a tutor? To get the obvious questions out of the way: is Macbeth relevant? Faulkner? |

It's bad news, then? Yep He has failed an audition, perhaps? An exam? A job interview? This Is it a paper copy? An email? This Something on a website? Is it a bad review? A negative critique from a tutor? To get the obvious questions out of the way: is Macbeth relevant? Faulkner? Neither, although you've given me a puzzle idea by mentioning Macbeth. Two, in fact. |

Ok, we're motoring with this one. Was it a face-to-face interview? Or an online interview? A quiz of sorts? Was he asked about a song? A lyric? Did he misunderstand a quotation of some kind? Was it a music-related job? A teaching job? The language made it worse: did the email contain swearing? Or some form of words that rubbed salt in his wounds? Did it contain a wordplay? Or some sort of ambiguity? Incidentally, is this a true story? |

No Did he misunderstand a quotation of some kind? No Was it a music-related job? No A teaching job? No, but it was an on-campus job. What the job was for is irrelevant. The language made it worse: did the email contain swearing? No Or some form of words that rubbed salt in his wounds? Yope Did it contain a wordplay? Yope Or some sort of ambiguity? Yope Incidentally, is this a true story? Yes |

So, if I got it right, Eric receives an e-mail with a negative answer after a job interview; he already knew that the answer would be negative because he didn't hear "the song", but the written answer made it worse. Correct till now? Is it relevant that the answer arrives via e-mail? He knew that the answer would be negative for sure, or he just strongly expected that? The song: a real song? a sound? any e-mail reception sound relevant? |

Was the e-mail sent only to him? Or was someone else in the address/cc fields? Would this have been different, had the answer been positive? |

Was the "song" a ringtone on his phone? YES!! Did those accepted get a phone call, whereas those rejected only got an email? YES!! Now why did "the language make it worse"? HINT: The answer has a slight Nimue-esque feel to it. |

Oh heck. I can never solve Nimue's puzzles. I have trouble with them too - we're in the same boat there. Was it a rap song? Oh it wasn't Mr Fury, was it? The fellow who rants down the phone? No to all of these. The song is no longer relevant - just the language part needs to be deduced. |

Was the answer a standard, non-personalized one? (I received so many of them last here when looking for a job, and they ARE very annoying) Was there any mistake (Eric's name/position, etc.) in the letter? Did they give a particular reason in the letter for not hiring Eric? Was this reason what caused Eric's annoyance? |

Was the answer a standard, non-personalized one? Yes (tiny "-ish") (I received so many of them last here when looking for a job, and they ARE very annoying) Yes, they are =P Was there any mistake (Eric's name/position, etc.) in the letter? No Did they give a particular reason in the letter for not hiring Eric? Yope - you're very close! Was this reason what caused Eric's annoyance? Yes, taking into account the "Yope" on the previous question |

Was the reason they give something stupid? Something not corresponding to reality? Something not corresponding to Eric's profile? Something they already knew before the interview, so that the interview itself would be unsuccessful in any way? Or was it simply a "your profile does not correspond to what we look for"-style answer? and of course, I received those letters last YEAR, not last HERE.... typing too fast, that's what you get... :-) |

Something they already knew before the interview, so that the interview itself would be unsuccessful in any way? Or was it simply a "your profile does not correspond to what we look for"-style answer? This one. Which is enough for a **********SPOILER********** "Eric" is actually me, and this happened two days ago. I had had a job interview with one of the campus departments, and I was informed that I would receive a phone call within a certain block of time if I was to move forward to the next round of interviews, and an e-mail if I had been rejected. A short while after the block of time ended, I checked my e-mail, knowing that I had been rejected because I had not heard my phone's ringtone (which is, indeed, a song). Sure enough, I had been rejected, but the answer upset me because they used politically correct circumlocution to tell me I did not get the job. The verbatim text was: "We have carefully reviewed all the applications that were submitted and felt that other candidates were better suited for our current openings." That aggravated me - if I didn't get the job, why not just come out and say "you didn't get the job"? There's no need to use softer language to try and "ease the pain" - no matter the language, it doesn't change the facts. I was annoyed for a while, but I got my revenge by making a puzzle out of this. Excellent work, everyone: a lot of you contributed to the solve, notably Biograd, who made a key leap, and Mattiel, who got the final piece. |
