(I received so many of them last here when looking for a job, and they ARE very annoying) Was there any mistake (Eric's name/position, etc.) in the letter? Did they give a particular reason in the letter for not hiring Eric? Was this reason what caused Eric's annoyance? | ||

Which is enough for a **********SPOILER********** "Eric" is actually me, and this happened two days ago. I had had a job interview with one of the campus departments, and I was informed that I would receive a phone call within a certain block of time if I was to move forward to the next round of interviews, and an e-mail if I had been rejected. A short while after the block of time ended, I checked my e-mail, knowing that I had been rejected because I had not heard my phone's ringtone (which is, indeed, a song). Sure enough, I had been rejected, but the answer upset me because they used politically correct circumlocution to tell me I did not get the job. The verbatim text was: "We have carefully reviewed all the applications that were submitted and felt that other candidates were better suited for our current openings." That aggravated me - if I didn't get the job, why not just come out and say "you didn't get the job"? There's no need to use softer language to try and "ease the pain" - no matter the language, it doesn't change the facts. I was annoyed for a while, but I got my revenge by making a puzzle out of this. Excellent work, everyone: a lot of you contributed to the solve, notably Biograd, who made a key leap, and Mattiel, who got the final piece. | ||
