Is the spesific religion relevant? or could any of them do? This thing they did, was that something that was planned (that people didn't think they could do beforehand, if you understand what I mean??)? Or did they perform the action out of the blue (something that made people go like - WOW, didn't think they were capable of that)? |

Sunday school relevant? Yesish - see below The other male, is there something relevant about him? Yes Is he related to anyone in the group? No Is he the minister of the church? No, but... Are we talking about a spesific variety of Christianity? Yesish - two specific varieties; see below If so, a local variety with just a few hundred followers? Yope Or a bigger one (like the Mormons)? Yope, but Mormonism is not relevant I really AM getting too tired here. Forgetting the most obvious questions. After all this is lateral and I have learned to take nothing for granted, lol Is the other man alive? Yes or dead? No Is it Jesus? No lets call HAF jane and HAM joe. The "other" HAM we will call Gerald OK are jane and joe married? No are all twenty kids theirs? No do they run an orphanage? No are the kids adopted? No do they run a sunday school? Yesish - see below do they work in the church? Yes Does Gerald work in the church? Not that church... Did he help jane and joe in any way? No and finally, to get this out of the way, is sex relevant in any way? No RECAP and HINTS: Jane, Joe, and a group of 20 kids (to be more accurate, they're teenagers) make up a confirmation class at a congregational church (Jane and Joe are the teachers, though Joe is the more relevant one). They could be considered by some "the least likely group to do" something, but they did do it. The "something" involves Gerald, who is Yopishly a minister. The fact that it's a congregational church is not really relevant; the key is that it's a church group. |

did gerald get mad at jane and joe and the group because of the thing they did? I don't think Gerald knows...if Gerald knew, I'm sure he would get upset. Oh, and by the way, I'm part of the group of 20. did the thing they did affect him in some way? Noish is there a crucial difference between gerald and Joe's beliefs? YES - excellent question! Is Gerald a TV preacher? This!! An inspirational speaker? Marketing Spokesman? Cast member of Saturday Night Live? Has he written a book? Does Gerald belong to a denomination that is very strict and conservative? Unknown and irrel One that is very unforgiving towards people who don't think like them? Unknown and irrel So in the group's thinking he doesn't behave very Christian? Not the group's thinking - see below Does Gerald deny a core Christian belief? Unknown If so, does it involve the Bible? Sacraments? Trinity? Jesus as God? Forgiveness of sins? Grace? Creation? Unknown - see below That's all you need to know about Gerald - he's a televangelist. Explanation: Most Christians I know, and non-Christians as well, would not consider most televangelists to be Christians because it's not likely that they believe in Jesus by the Biblical definition (belief with the heart, not the head) - rather, they have the head-belief, but use it to turn a profit. Now what would be considered unlikely for a church confirmation class to do involving a televangelist? |

Is there anything else relevant about Gerald, except being a televangelist? No Is it necessary to find exactly what denomination/sect/church he was working for? No, and I will RECAP: My confirmation class at church did something involving Gerald, a televangelist. Doing this thing involved sending letters, and this took a period of months. The letters were not sent to the TV station Gerald worked for, a different TV station, or anyone Gerald worked with (or was related to). HINT: Who's left to send the letters to? |

...and recall, certain people would think that a church group would not do this thing. |

Well, that last part keeps confusing me more and more, lol The recipient of the letters, was one person? an organization? Was the recipient also christian? same denomination as Gerald? the group? other? What confuses me with that other part is that you said the letters were mainly positive in tone. So why would someone who didn't know your groups opinion of the televangelists find it strange that one Christian group wrote a positive letter about another Christian (even if it's a pretend-to-be-Christian, lol)? But my brain isn't working well tonight, so I guess I'll use the night to sleep on that problem. |

Well, that last part keeps confusing me more and more, lol The recipient of the letters, was one person? This an organization? Was the recipient also christian? same denomination as Gerald? I cannot answer this question...you're missing something really obvious! the group? other? What confuses me with that other part is that you said the letters were mainly positive in tone. So why would someone who didn't know your groups opinion of the televangelists find it strange that one Christian group wrote a positive letter about another Christian (even if it's a pretend-to-be-Christian, lol)? They would assume other groups, but not Christian groups, would write these letters. In more clear terms, people who assume televangelism represents mainstream Christianity would be more inclined to think that nonreligious groups would do this. And the positive tone of the letters should be a Yesish...my bad. But my brain isn't working well tonight, so I guess I'll use the night to sleep on that problem. Here's another HINT: As part of his televangelism, Gerald sells a product which is supposed to have miraculous healing powers. That should (hopefully) help, and clear things up a bit. |

ok, I haven't looked at this puzzle for awhile, you guys sent the letters to Gerald right? Did he respond? did you order his product? Did you pretend you were a nonbeliever asking him questions? Did you pretend to be healed by his product? Did you pretend you had bought it and it didn't work? |

ok, I haven't looked at this puzzle for awhile, you guys sent the letters to Gerald right? Yes!! Did he respond? did you order his product? Did you pretend you were a nonbeliever asking him questions? Yes to all of these!! Did you pretend to be healed by his product? Did you pretend you had bought it and it didn't work? Well, that's an interesting story... **********SPOILER******** "The Peter Popoff Prank" In the UCC church I grew up in, the confirmation class pulled a prank every year on televangelist Peter Popoff, who sells "Miracle Spring Water," which he claims has healing powers. The year I was confirmed, we did this same prank...I don't know if he ever caught on. My confirmation teacher ("Joe" in the puzzle) drafted a letter to Popoff using a fake name: "Natasha Xxxxxxx" (where the Xxxxxxx stands in for my teacher's real last name, and "Natasha" because that name spelled backwards is "Ah, Satan"; seriously, that's why we used that name). The goal was to see if he would believe "Natasha" was a real person, and would send us an "inspiring" response, along with a request to buy his "miracle spring water." (Before I go further, we were indeed planning to order this product. "Natasha" indeed asked for the "miracle water," claiming "she" had a knee injury. We were going to test the water on one of my classmates, who indeed had a knee injury.) Anyway, Popoff took the bait, sending us a response reading things like "As soon as I read your letter, God opened my heart to pray for you" and other stuff like that. He requested that we send exactly 17 dollars to get the "miracle water" (along with a packet of "miracle oil" that I think was included), and gave "spiritual reasons" why he asked for exactly 17 dollars; the 1 and 7 apparently had some "spiritual significance." We sent in the money, and sure enough, we did receive a package which was supposed to hold the water and oil. I say "supposed to" because, although there was oil, and there was another tiny packet, the second packet was torn, and there was no water inside. (Ergo, we could not test it.) We wrote back to Popoff (or should I say, "Natasha" wrote back), explaining the problem and requesting another packet. As far as I know, we never received a response. (Interesting information about Peter Popoff: In the late 1980s, James Randi - see my "Stella #4" puzzle for more information - exposed Popoff as a fraud when he picked up radio signals showing that Popoff's wife was relaying personal information about attendees to the televangelist, who claimed to be receiving this information from God.) So that's the tale of the Peter Popoff Prank. I'll bet not many people would expect a church group to do that to a televangelist! Excellent job, everyone, especially Eli, who did most of the legwork, and La_sparky, who closed this one out. |
