A pernicious false claim that is often made about families was actually true of my unpernicious family. How come?

does the claim relate to: money? health? education? romance? crime? genetic inheritance? selfishness? greed? secretiveness? politics? jobs? hobbies? race? the law? art? sport? competitiveness? jealousy? religion? idleness? small mindedness?

is the claim about the effect upon children of their family life? the relationship between parents and children? between siblings?

is the claim made usually by people about their own families? to explain their own problems? or failings?
is it a claim made about particular families? or the general idea of families?

so the claim relates to health? physical health? longevity? susceptibility to disease? healthcare? mental health?

and the claim somehwat relates to selfishness and possibly to greed and small mindedness?

would the claimant usually be saying something negative about their own family? but for your family, although it is true it is not in fact negative? or are you saying that there is indeed a relevant negative feature of your family?

family conflicts are somewhat relevant - is it relevant what these conflicts are about? who takes part? how they start? where they are carried out? how they are resolved? whether they are resolved?

the pernicious false claim - does it relate to the way a family behaves if one of them is seriously ill? to the way they treat that person? to the extent to which they wish to pay for the care of that person?

is the claim that the family wishes the person would just die? to save them 'losing' money on treating the person? that they will be glad when the person dies? that it will be better for the family if the person dies?

is the pernicious false claim that families, after a while, cease to have sympathy for a family member who has a long term illness? is the claim that the family cares more for a family member when they are sick than when they are well? less?

is the claim that it's somehow 'good' for a family to cope with a sick member? that it 'brings the family together'? makes them reassess their priorities? that nothing else matters? that they discontinue their normal lives while that member is sick?

Does the claim involve how much the family would care for the sick member? How much they'd pay for the treatment? How much time they'd spend with the patient? How much effort they'd put into helping the patient get better?

Did she need surgery? Bypass surgery? A transplant? Something removed (like an appendectomy)? An amputation?

does this all relate to your family when you were a child? yes before you got a cat? my whole childhood did your family have a cat?We tried, because I wanted one so much, but it made my mother sneeze so much that we gave it to a nearly fish store where it could eat fish heads & I could visit it,

I'm lost in the maze of this puzzle ..... Just add to the puzzle description that the medical problem in my family was that my mother was severely allergic to cats, and HINT: I love cats.

I'm going to jump in at the very end of this puzzle, with a suggestion. Sorry guys, if this happens to be correct.

There are loads of ads in papers (at least in Norway I used to see several every single day commuting in to work) about cats (or dogs for that matter) being given away/rehomed, because of allergies in the family. But it's often not true, just an excuse. Is this the solution?

Is it simply the reason for not having a cat was because of allergies? When typically, mothers who say this have other reasons for not wanting the pet (maintenance, responsibility, etc.)?

It is VERY relevant that we couldn't have a cat because of my mother's allergies, but the scrund is something general about people with medical problems and their familiesWhen typically, mothers who say this have other reasons for not wanting the pet (maintenance, responsibility, etc.)? irrel

Some say that living -- especially as a kid -- together with animals, cats being the most to blame, is bad for your health, because you are bound to inhale hair and this will be damaging to your respiratory system. OTRT?

As I lived all my life with cats, I personally came to the conclusion that smoking two packs of cigarettes per day, as I do, might be even more damaging, but ...

Health & fitness aren't everyone's top priority. Some people prefer to pursue happiness, & that's okay. I've never smoked, but, as old forum hands know, I used to be enormously fat (more than 2x my present, normal weight). It was DELIGHTFUL to eat whatever I wanted. It made every day an adventure

Is the scrund that no one in the family would get a cat ever? Or would wait until the relative died/moved away before getting one? Or is that the truth?

That families will go completely out of their way, change their schedules, lives, etc. to avoid the allergen? No, the scrund is just patients, medical problems, & families in general, NOT about cats or allergies. My family's situation ( involving my love of cats & my mother's allergy to them) was a rare case where the scrund was actually true.

Details about cats emailed. THANKS!!

I know we're circling the drain here, but I can't quite see it....

Could you please recap? Add the following to the puzzle statement: The scrund is a general one about patients, medical problems, and illness. The scrund does not mention allergies, but my mother's allergy to cats combined with my love of cats made the scrund actually true in my family. We tried to have a cat, but her allergies weren't up to it. She doesn't especially like cats & has always been content to avoid them.

The patient? Of course!

AT LAST, here's a
*****SPOILER ************
A common & pernicious cliche about illness is that the patient's family suffers more than the patient himself, which, of course, deflects sympathy from the suffering patients. Some bioethicists even say patients have a duty to die in order to avoid burdening their families! But of course, it's generally the patient who suffers most if he's conscious & aware what's going on. In my family, however, my mother didn't suffer from being severely allergic to cats. After all, she didn't want a cat & could easily avoid them. But I wanted a cat--so I suffered more from her allergy than she did. No one will suffer if you check out my new puzzle at the bottom of the page.

Hurrah! Well done Nimue! And one could say, rather than expecting LTPF puzzle-solvers to suffer most from not getting an answer to the puzzle they're trying to solve, it's the puzzle host who suffers most, especially if they thought the puzzle would go quickly and it drags on for months! But oh, such enjoyable torture *grin* At least we're not sick, just obsessed. LOL. :-D

Kaylee - now that I'm at college, I don't have my family bugging me for being on the computer all day, so I know what you're going through. Although I do have class - it's college, after all.
