A few months ago, I was cured of an extremely embarrassing musical scrund - I'd venture that it's more embarrassing than Peter's "Various Artists" scrund. I doubt many, if any, other people would have this scrund. Maybe some children would, but it's still unlikely. Fire away. |

You thought DRM was an indie punkcore band? You thought a treble clef was just a wiggly ornament to make scores look pretty? You thought that Sibelius's symphonies were written by a rubbishy piece of proprietary software? |

Is it Rumpelstiltskin? Indeed it is *cringe* I had to google for it, I really didn't know the tale... It's very well-known, at least in the US. I'm not sure where else it's really well known. Please allow me to introduce myself...the holder of this really embarrassing **********SPOILER********** When I was about 14 or 15, I heard the song "Sympathy for the Devil" for the first time, but only heard the chorus ("Pleased to meet you / won't you guess my name"). I did not hear the song's title, or any of the other lyrics. My first thought at hearing the song: "This must be about Rumpelstiltskin!" Somehow, every other time I heard the song over the next few years, I only heard the chorus and didn't understand the lyrics, so my scrund remained intact. (I did know there was a Rolling Stones song called "Sympathy for the Devil," but I didn't realize that this was the song I had heard so many times.) It was only about three months ago that I paid attention to the other lyrics and finally made the connection that the song I had "never heard before" was the same one that I had been listening to for a long time. Oops! So for quite a few years I thought the song "Sympathy for the Devil" was narrated by Rumpelstiltskin - feel free to point and laugh. Well done Peter, Mattiel, Keith, Mick, Jacob, Wilhelm, Sam, and Dean. |

Sam and Dean are the Winchester brothers from the TV show Supernatural, which had an episode titled "Sympathy for the Devil." I enjoy the show, so I couldn't resist a little shout-out. I've never actually been to a Stones concert - I've seen Foreigner, Steve Miller Band, and Bruce Springsteen live, but that's it (so far). |

In case anyone's curious, I was showing this forum to one of my youth leaders, and I used this puzzle as an example of a scrund (the song had not been identified yet, though the band had). It took him quite a while to figure it out, and now (he's told me) he can't stop thinking about lateral puzzles....I may have gotten someone hooked. BTW, you are the first people (as well as my youth leader) to know about this scrund....feel free to make fun of my stupidity all you want. |

I just told my parents about this today (they were visiting me at college). They laughed at me. Not like I'm surprised.... For more Stones humor, the Capitol Steps did a Rolling Stones parody once - it included parodies of four Stones songs, all related to them being really old. For example "Angie" becomes "Angie - - - oplasty...." Pure hilarity. |
