Inspired by Cupofsun's "Gravity always wins", this puzzle is both a normal puzzle and an idiomuzzle. It can be solved through either of those methods, and both will lead to the same solution. I do expect this one to be quick, but I hope you enjoy.

Greg calmly strode into the living room, where four of his friends were waiting. As usual, they were being quite rowdy.

"Quite down, everyone," he shouted over the din. "Is it all set up?"

One of the guys in the melee stood up. "Yeah, my mother did the set up. I can't wait to hear him cry," the man taunted.

Another man shouted, "Ah, Dave, you're just a common bum!" This sparked more shouting, and soon a minor scuffle emerged. Greg charged in to break it up. "Chuck, quiet!"

Chuck eventually escaped from the tussle, holding a beer bottle. Slamming his drink onto a table, he bellowed, "Well, it's starting now. It's the end of the road, boys," he continued to taunt. Fortunately Greg was able to hold everyone back, but another man shouted out, "Chuck, you stupid fat cow..." before Greg shut him up.

"Quiet, Travis. Chuck's right about one thing...it's starting."

The five men quieted down and crowded around a table. Over the next few minutes, Chuck and one other man became antsier by the minute, while Dave, Travis, and Greg kept getting excited. Suddenly, the latter three men let out a groan. Chuck and the other man became ecstatic, and let out a whoop.

"Attaway, Harry!" cried Chuck. "See those guys, they're just a group of brainless morons." Had Greg not intervened to point out that they all needed to quiet down again, Dave and Travis likely would have jumped Chuck right there.

Everyone gathered around the table, and almost immediate Dave jumped up in excitement, but he quieted down once more. Suddenly everyone became a bit somber. Trying to lighten the mood, Dave asked Greg about his recent trip to Yemen, who responded that he'd enjoyed it, before going into the kitchen to get a beer.

When he returned, Harry and Chuck were excited again. "See? We've still got this! What are we worried about?" Travis retorted, "Yeah?...Well, we'll see what happens with that orb in the next...."

Again, Greg shushed everyone...and everyone did quiet down. As they gathered around the table, it was almost like they knew what was going to happen next.

The question is...what happened next?

Huh...would finding out what the sports-related, rubber/leather ball was help solve what the idiomuzzlic globe-ish Earth word is? Not sure, but it will help with the story. Remember, the story and the idiom have the same answer, so the ball may help with the idiom, but not necessarily with the specific "Earth" word.

So the person who would possibly cry is on the radio? If not an athlete, is he involved in sports in another way? A coach?

Does it matter what the specific sport is?

Is the radio in the middle of the table? Were they listening to a live game? Or a recording of one?

Is there a relevant reason why they are listening to the game rather than watching it? If so:
Was this in a time when tvs didn't exist? Or when tvs existed but weren't common yet?
Was the cable out?
Were they out of range of the tv broadcast?

Real California cheese comes from happy cows? Happy cows come from California? (as a CA girl, couldn't resist) No, although I've seen those commercials back home in CT too =)

Story:
Are the guys listening to a baseball game? Yes!! Is it the announcer that is going to "cry"? Yes!! Is it a famous radio personality? He's famous solely for calling this one game. Should be a cinch now.

The five guys are listening to a baseball game on the radio. The one guy wants to hear the announcer cry, and the announcer is famous mainly for calling this one game. The story takes place before televisions became widespread.

As you request, Balin, friend,
I shall do without delay
And see this Idiomuzzle's end
by placing words in play:

I have the home run for this puzzle's end
for I've the riddle unfurled:
And so Balin post the 's' word, this post I send:
It's the "shot heard 'round the world"!

**********SPOILER**********

Both the idiomuzzle and the story lead to the same event:

The shot heard 'round the world

Referring to Bobby Thomson's home run, of course.

The story was fictional, but included several clues. The whole segment involving a tape recorder and the announcer "crying" is a combination of two stories - I don't know which is true - about how the famous Russ Hodges call was recorded. One person is called a "common bum" - the Brooklyn Dodgers were well-known as "Dem Bums!". The two "groups" of guys who got excited or disappointed did so as according to events in that inning, and they all became "somber" when Don Mueller injured his ankle sliding into third on the play before the home run.

As for the idiomuzzle:

common -> the (the word "the" is the most common word in the English language)
drink -> shot (as in a shot of whiskey)
cow -> heard (a group of cows is a herd, which is a homophone of "heard")
group -> round (a round of drinks)
Yemen -> the (Yemen = YE, which is Olde Englishe for "the")
orb -> world (poetic)

This was my little homage to Bobby Thomson - RIP. Sunday was the 59th anniversary of his famous blast.

Nice job Kaygee, Galfisk, Kaylee, and all.

"Bobby Thomson... up there swingin'... He's had two out of three, a single and a double, and Billy Cox is playing him right on the third-base line... One out, last of the ninth... Branca pitches... Bobby Thomson takes a strike called on the inside corner... Bobby hitting at .292... He's had a single and a double and he drove in the Giants' first run with a long fly to center... Brooklyn leads it 4-2...Hartung down the line at third not taking any chances... Lockman with not too big of a lead at second, but he'll be runnin' like the wind if Thomson hits one... Branca throws... [audible sound of bat meeting ball]

There's a long drive... it's gonna be, I believe...THE GIANTS WIN THE PENNANT!! THE GIANTS WIN THE PENNANT! THE GIANTS WIN THE PENNANT! THE GIANTS WIN THE PENNANT! Bobby Thomson hits into the lower deck of the left-field stands! The Giants win the pennant and they're goin' crazy, they're goin' crazy! HEEEY-OH!!!'' [ten-second pause for crowd noise]

I don't believe it! I don't believe it! I do not believe it! Bobby Thomson... hit a line drive... into the lower deck... of the left-field stands... and this blame place is goin' crazy! The Giants! Horace Stoneham has got a winner! The Giants won it... by a score of 5 to 4... and they're pickin' Bobby Thomson up... and carryin' him off the field!"
