Is the consequence of this theory experienced by those who order pizza? eat pizza? bake pizza? serve pizza? Or is it a FA that this theory "explains" something that people experience in their everyday lives? Aside: I heard a bunch of "theories" like this (or rather, like I'm assuming this to be) on a radio program about three weeks ago. Maybe I'll make mini-puzzles out of some of them. |

Is the consequence of this theory experienced by those who order pizza? Yope... eat pizza? ...and Yes - No to rest. And a slight FA. bake pizza? serve pizza? Or is it a FA that this theory "explains" something that people experience in their everyday lives? Yope, I think, and the FA mentioned above is a different one. Aside: I heard a bunch of "theories" like this (or rather, like I'm assuming this to be) on a radio program about three weeks ago. Maybe I'll make mini-puzzles out of some of them. That would be cool, although I'm fairly certain that this theory is nothing like you're assuming. |

Does the theory have do do with how much you pay? the state the pizza is in when you receive it (hot, cold, fresh-tasting, etc.)? Whether you get the correct order (as opposed to someone else's)? |

Hang on, what size pizza are we talking about? Not relevant to the theory Or where are you getting this pizza? Ditto - the only thing relevant about where one is getting the pizza is that it requires that one drive to get there. Unless it's a personal size, that seems cheap... There's a place back home that has pretty good prices on pizza...it's not a national chain, so that may be why. HINT: Remember the man...there's still a lot to find out about him. |

People who are in college? Yes!! RECAP: The guy who supervised my driver's test told me his "Theory of Pizza Relativity" during the test. It involves college students who are driving to get pizza, and the average cost of pizza (about $10) is relevant. What's left: why are the college students going to get pizza? Why must the students be driving? And what's the significance of the cost? |

Does it apply to the ones taking driving lessons? No - it applies to students who have their licenses already. |

Upon reading the puzzle statement, I thought it was that the volume of a cylindrical pizza with radius z and height a is pi*z*z*a. :P |

Is it about the cost of a pizza vs. the cost spent on gas when driving to get it? Does the theory have anything to do with whether it makes economic sense to drive to get a pizza? |

And that's a good one, Whirligig. Someone should make one of those silly math t-shirts with it. |

No Does the theory have anything to do with whether it makes economic sense to drive to get a pizza? No And that's a good one, Whirligig. Someone should make one of those silly math t-shirts with it. I have one of those silly math t-shirts - it says "Fibonacci: It's as easy as 1, 1, 2, 3." Amazing how many people don't get it. Although my Global professor loved it. HINT: A driving instructor wants to make sure that people drive... |

HINT: A driving instructor wants to make sure that people drive... Good thing you said that. I would have kind of thought the opposite, that a driving instructor would see all the stupid mistakes people make when learning how to drive, and would discourage young adults from being too eager to get their licenses before they are ready. Though I guess that would apply more to one who conducts driving tests. Anyway, so does the theory specifically encourage people to drive to pick up pizzas? or to drive in general? Does the connection to "relativity" have to do with driving speed? Does it imply that a pizza that is being transported at high speeds undergoes a favorable change relative to one that is at rest? |

Anyway, so does the theory specifically encourage people to drive to pick up pizzas? or to drive in general? Neither - it only applies when people drive, though. Does the connection to "relativity" have to do with driving speed? Does it imply that a pizza that is being transported at high speeds undergoes a favorable change relative to one that is at rest? No - it's just what he called the theory, and I don't think it technically involves relativity. |

HINT REPHRASED: Finish the sentence - A driving instructor wants people to drive... slowly? carefully? courteously? or is it something more specific, like avoiding others' blind spots or waiting after a turn to switch off the signal? No - it's just what he called the theory, and I don't think it technically involves relativity. Well, even if it did involve a pizza changing depending on the speed, it wouldn't be a serious application of relativity, as it doesn't take into account that you would change too in the same way, and that any effects would be far too small to justify any human action as a result. |

HINT REPHRASED: Finish the sentence - A driving instructor wants people to drive... slowly? carefully? This, so his theory would hence involve.... courteously? or is it something more specific, like avoiding others' blind spots or waiting after a turn to switch off the signal? No specifics are involved. That would make a very interesting theory. |

so his theory would hence involve.... keeping one's eyes on the road? avoiding distractions (e.g. cell phones)? stopping at stop signs? looking all ways at every intersection? being aware of the brakes' stopping distance? |

Well...I suppose Yope to all; it's a lot more general than that - see below. Driving carefully as to not spill the load of pizzas in the front seat? No. HINT: The theory is about why one should drive safely, and the cost is involved. |

Cost of fuel? cost of accidents? Is the cost visualized in number of pizzas? As in "if you dent the car, it's going to cost you a hundred pizzas"? |

Cost of fuel? No cost of accidents? No, but close Is the cost visualized in number of pizzas? Yes!! As in "if you dent the car, it's going to cost you a hundred pizzas"? Yes!! Cheap pizza = reckless driving? No Does the price of a speeding ticket factor in to the theory? That, and then some. The rest is just toppings, so **********SPOILER********** While I was taking my driving test, my instructor told me his "Theory of Pizza Relativity." I will recite it as best I can: "You're in high school, right? And the pizza's bad, right? Well, in college, the pizza's worse. So say about once a week, you go out for pizza in order to get away from the college food. Say that one time, you're in a rush to get there, and you run a red light, don't stop at a stop sign, or something else, and you get pulled over. In Connecticut, the ticket alone will cost you about 500 dollars. But your insurance will also go up, by a minimum of 500 dollars. "Now, the average cost of pizza is what? About 10 dollars. Multiply that over the course of a year - 52 weeks - and that's what? 500 dollars or so. So whenever you're out driving, and you're tempted to speed, run a stop sign, et cetera, think of all the pizza you're saving by driving safe. Nice job to everyone who worked on this, especially Galfisk and Ixoye, who had enough between them to finish off the last slice. |

Fun puzzle! Money can seem abstract sometimes, so a visualization like this will drive the point home in a whole different way. I find myself visualizing money in number of skydives, and unless it's something I must have, I don't buy it if I'll get more enjoyment from the equivalent skydives. |
