Male or female; I do not know. It's a mystery to me.

Transvestite? Transgender? transsexual? Hermaphrodite? Caster Semenya (female runner from South Africa who has had the fact that she is a woman challenged. Her name is an anagram for "A secret man? Yes." Homosexual? Human? Animal? Are we trying to figure out who (or what) you do not know if it is male or female? Why you don't?

Transvestite? Transgender? transsexual? Hermaphrodite? Could be any of these, I have no clue and do not want to make assumptions.
Caster Semenya (female runner from South Africa who has had the fact that she is a woman challenged. Her name is an anagram for "A secret man? Yes." Possible but unlikely.
Homosexual? Maybe. Human? Most definitely human!

Animal? Not this.
Are we trying to figure out who This(or what) you do not know if it is male or female? Yes
Why you don't? and yes

Can we call the person of ambiguous sex Pat? (Since that could be male or female)?

Do you know Pat personally? Ever met Pat? Have you seen Pat on TV? Is Pat famous? (Sorry, I'm having trouble figuring out which pronoun to use so I'm just going to have to call Pat Pat). Would most Americans know who Pat is? Is Pat alive? Adult? Is Pat an LTPF forum member? Related to you?

On a side note, when my mom was a lawyer she represented a transsexual who had shoplifted women's clothes. (S)he had undergone hormone therapy and therefore looked like a woman but hadn't actually had surgery so still had male genitalia. (And was apparently a beautiful woman, since one of the witnesses stated that she commented on her (his?) beautiful cheeks when (s)he came into the store. Anyway, they didn't know whether to send this individual to a men's or women's prison because if they put him with the men he'd get killed for having breasts and if they put him with the women he'd get killed for having male genitalia. So they gave him (her) solitary for his (her) own protection. But then s(he) sued because s(he) wasn't allowed the normal privileges of prisoners, such as yard, library, etc. and could not be denied them under the laws regarding shoplifting which did not normally permit solitary as punishment. My mom was hired pro bono (since all attorneys in New Jersey were at the time required to do a certain amount of hours pro bono) and wound up talking to the warden, arranging for this individual to have those rights, and the case was dropped.

Can we call the person of ambiguous sex Pat? You may
(Since that could be male or female)? Sound reasoning.

Do you know Pat personally? I do not know Pat at all
Ever met Pat? Nope.
Have you seen Pat on TV? No, I have never seen what Pat looks like
Is Pat famous? Most likely not
(Sorry, I'm having trouble figuring out which pronoun to use so I'm just going to have to call Pat Pat). I understand
Would most Americans know who Pat is? Probably not
Is Pat alive? I hope so, otherwise things would be awkward
Adult? Probably
Is Pat an LTPF forum member? Yes.
Related to you? Highly unlikely

Is Pat an LTPF member who does not list their sex in the profile? And has a gender-neutral name (like Pat or Chris)? It wouldn't be me again would it?

I take it I can't use the [LTPF List of LTPF members] since that would give it away?

No, you're not wrong. That's a relief. =P

I take it I can't use the [LTPF List of LTPF members] since that would give it away? Normally I love invoking LTPF lists and do not mind answering them, but this time, yes, it would give it away. The title is a clue, and "Pat" is actually not that far off...

Similar as in "the first three letters of Potter are in the word". You would certainly expect to find products made from it at McDonalds, though maybe not chips (except in the UK no doubt)

Yes. And I do indeed realize it. But there's nothing else for me to call him/her. And I've still got no indication on whether "Potato" is male, female, or whatever.

I believe that makes it a ***SPOILER***.
Good job, Gregory!

Nice puzzle. Given that Potato ran a puzzle about leaving dishes in a pile rather than drying them I'm betting he's a bloke.

That means I guessed wrong too - I'm notably terrible at guessing the gender of LTPF members (except when the username includes the actual name). Potato has now joined the ranks of Gourami and Ohlala, among others, whose genders I have guessed wrong.

Sorry.

Both are female. Although I think they both have their genders on their profiles, which would have saved me the embarrassment in the first place, had I just checked.

"Their name is gender-neutral in English at least...in other languages it would be a masculine noun "

Can't speak to some other languages, but it would definitely be a mistake to call Potato the masculine form 'el papa' en espanol (sorry, no tilde). 'La papa' (feminine) is the tuber; 'el papa/Papa' is the Pope, as those people (almost definitely Americans... sigh) who tried to sell t-shirts for a Papal visit to Mexico saying "Vi la papa!" ("I saw the potato!") know -- if they're real and not a translation legend... And that's your random amusing Spanish lesson for the day :-)

Now you know... and knowing is half the battle. Yo Joe!

(So Potato, if you're still around, any particular reason you chose that name?)

;-) It's probably the only language I could possibly correct someone on (aside from English) usage-wise... and I had just remembered that bit about the shirts. If we were talking about French, I'd be in the same boat as you (1 quarter of 7th grade, 13 years ago)... No worries :-)
