People often choose a particular job because there is a sense in which it won't involve what the job title suggests. How come? |

Does the job title make you think of: long working hours? difficult work? strenuous work? boring work? bad career chances? dangerous work? a lonely workplace? having to deal with difficult people? bad payment? working indoors? working outdoors? travelling a lot? not travelling at all? |

so the job title implies that you will need to work at short notice? but people often choose it because there is a sense in which you won't have to do that? meaning you will have notice? you will have time to prepare? is the job 'relief X'? or 'locum X'? or 'stand in'? are 'unsociable hours' relevant? those who want the job - are they lazy? are they trying to avoid - working hard? working long hours? working unsociable hours? being poorly paid? being low status? is their reason for wanting the job rational? do they understand what the job involves? are they making a mistake? based upon the name? is pay relevant here? educational attainment? hobbies? race? romantic relationships? |

Can one choose where to work? Does one get anything from the employer that one can benefit from in their free time, such as a car that you're free to use or a computer? Or does the employer provide living quarters? Is insurance relevant? Dunno what it's like in other countries, but in Germany the Armed Forces will pay for your university education if you commit yourself to them for a couple of years afterwards. Is it something like that? |

is the answer that the term 'emergency room specialist' seems to imply that the doctor will be constantly working in a situation with challenging, high pressured, last minute, scary, one-off, high stress situations - but that actually they are so highly trained and get so much experience in these situations that they are not actually so challenging but actually become normal? (I know an emergency department specialist who left because it all became same-y. He went into Public Health because we do something different every day!) |

Unlike an obstetrician, for example, an emergency room doctor is never called away from his free time to deal with an emergency for a longstanding patient--because he has no longstanding patients.
