A group of six students go to see a certain event. During the event, five of the students progressively become more and more tired, while the sixth one does not. Why?

Shall we call them Alex, Bob, Carl, Dan, and perhaps Emily and Fiona, then? (Nicked the male names from Greg's puzzle, though I'm not saying they're the same people.)

So they're college students, then? Do they know each other well? Share classes? Are any of them related by blood? Friends? Dating? Married (to each other)?

Are any of them cheerleaders? "Superfans"? Chest-painters? Relevant where in the Student section they are? At UConn, the enthusiasm of the student section fans dissipates as you get further from court level, and I'd assume it would be the same at Elon. Is this correct? Relevant? If where they are matters, would it help to know where the student section at the Elon football stadium is? Is it behind one of the end zones? Relevant which one? Along midfield? At [LTPF list of any positions that I may have forgotten]? is the Layout of the stadium relevant? Is it one level? Two? Do you mind just giving a brief description so I'm not playing 20 questions? Does the student section extend from field level to the top of the stadium? If so, were the six students in the problem sitting near the field? At the top? Somewhere in the middle? Any other part of where they were sitting matter?

Ooh - it wasn't one of those games that ESPN pays schools to play at weird times so they can televise it live, is it? Like when Monmouth played Stony Brook in basketball at 6 AM earlier this year? And surprisingly sold out? But then Kent State hosted I forget who at 8 AM and the arena was pretty much dead and empty? Anything along these lines?

Are any of them cheerleaders? No "Superfans"? Yes, DOYD of "superfan" Chest-painters? No Relevant where in the Student section they are? Yes At UConn, the enthusiasm of the student section fans dissipates as you get further from court level, and I'd assume it would be the same at Elon. That is indeed the case Is this correct? Yes Relevant? Yes

To help simplify, I'll answer this block in one fell swoop. There isn't officially a single student "section," per se, at Rhodes Stadium (Elon's football field), but the unofficial student sections is one of the two that are at field level at midfield behind the Elon bench (the 50-yard line goes directly between two sections). The six students were all in the front row of this section, right at midfield. I'm going to try and find a stadium map to help give you a better picture.

Nope. Although the Elon-Duke game at the start of the season was televised on ESPN3. A lot of people from Elon travelled to that game, including my roommate, but not including me. We lost that one.

That entire last line, by the way? Totally irrelevant. If you haven't noticed, I get off on tangents really easily.

This is kind of embarrassing - I can't find a section diagram of the football stadium anywhere on the Elon website. But just some more information - the stadium has two levels, and the "student section" is on the field level.

Check that - I just found a diagram hidden deep in the ticket section. Ignore what I said about the 50-yard line bisecting two sections - it actually cuts the "student section" in half. The section itself is #104.

RECAP: The six students are attending a football game. Sitting in the front row of the student section, they do something every time the team scores. This something involves physical energy, and through doing this over the course of the game, all six students, except for Fiona, become tired.

Mascot relevant? Do they high five the mascot? Do jumping jacks? Imitate a Phoenix (although I don't know exactly how they would do that)? Something related to a Phoenix? Would this work if they were in the front row of the UConn student section (which, if it matters, is behind one of the end zones)? The Texas A&M Student Section (which is the 12th Man and stands for the entire game including timeouts, halftime, etc.) On that subject, does the Elon student section generally stand for the whole game? If so, is this only during action, or would it include timeouts, halftime, etc.? Is this relevant? (UConn, and most schools to my knowledge, will stand during action but not during breaks). Something along the line of the Oregon Ducks mascot doing over 500 pushups in one game because the team scored so many times and he does one pushup after each score for each point they have? Would Fiona have been tired at the end if Elon had won 72-0? Would anyone have been tired at the end if Elon had been shut out? Had only managed a field goal? Do you mind telling us if it was [LTPF List of Elon Home football games]? If so, can we then proceed to look that game up?
Could this have happened at any Elon home game this year? Could it have happened at any theoretical Elon home game this year (including shutouts, blowouts, etc. even if those didn't happen)
To clarify, the first question is referring to actual Elon home games that actually happened, while the second is referring to whether it could have happened at ANY Elon home game that could theoretically have happened, regardless of whether it actually did.

Sure, or I could just tell you: the final score was 45-14, Elon.
Could this have happened at any Elon home game this year? It could have, yes. Could it have happened at any theoretical Elon home game this year (including shutouts, blowouts, etc. even if those didn't happen) Well, it couldn't have happened if Elon didn't score many points.

Evryone Picks fiona up when elon scores, evryone exept fiona get tied. (as fiona isn't picking anyone up) Yep, and that means

**********SPOILER**********

At the Western Carolina game on November 2010, about halfway through the game I noticed that a group of five students in the front row were celebrating Elon scores in an interesting, humorous way: they would pick up a sixth student and lift her in the air the number of times that matched the number of points we had scored. By the time I noticed, we had already scored 35 points, and we would add a field goal and touchdown later; thus, the five students had to lift the sixth in the air a total of 83 more times, in addition to the 105 lifts they had already done in celebration. I figured that the five of them must have been very tired at the end of the game from all that lifting, but the sixth one? Not so tired - she wasn't doing any lifting.

I took cell phone videos of the final two sets of lifts (when we had 38 and 45 points, respectively). If I ever figure out how to get them off the phone and onto the computer, I will post them.

Excellent work, everyone, for solving this! Bonus bonus points go to Martinfg, Ixoye, Noel, and Gregory, each of whom figured out an important piece of the puzzle, as well as iRader, who put it all together.
