While walking back to my dorm, after taking my last exam, I started singing a certain song. Why? True story, happened today just over a half-hour ago |

Does the song convey feelings of great happiness? relief? freedom? Is it relevant how well you felt the exam went? Did you ace it? Is the song seasonal? |

First, congrats on end o' semester 1 from an alum of other NC schools -- don't know if Elon has any end of semester traditions, so go get some Waffle House or something ;-) Did the song have some significance in the moment (e.g. "School's Out" by Alice Cooper)? or not (e.g. "Oklahoma!" just popped into your head for no apparent reason)? Did something during the time you were in the exam cause you to think of the song? Something during the time you were walking back to your dorm? Is something that you will be doing now that your finished with exams relevant (e.g. packing/going home/something else)? Was there a question on your exam that made you think of the song? Is the class (title/subject) the exam was for relevant? |

First, congrats on end o' semester 1 from an alum of other NC schools -- don't know if Elon has any end of semester traditions, so go get some Waffle House or something ;-) Thanks! I don't think we have any traditions, at least not this semester. And I'm flying home tonight - yay! Oh, and I've never been to Waffle House. I should probably do that sometime. Did the song have some significance in the moment (e.g. "School's Out" by Alice Cooper)? Yes, but may (read: likely will) mislead. And not that song. or not (e.g. "Oklahoma!" just popped into your head for no apparent reason)? No Did something during the time you were in the exam cause you to think of the song? No Something during the time you were walking back to your dorm? Yope Is something that you will be doing now that your finished with exams relevant (e.g. packing/going home/something else)? No Was there a question on your exam that made you think of the song? No Is the class (title/subject) the exam was for relevant? No Is there some pun involved? Not a pun, but there's a heaping spoonful of humor involved. Dorm to Run? Not this |

Ok, so...While walking back to your dorm, after taking your last exam, you started singing a certain song. Acing the exam is irrelevant (though I hope you did). The song had some particular significance to the moment, though this will likely mislead us. Something yopishly caused you to think of it while you were walking back to your dorm, but nothing to do with packing, the subject of the exam, or any question on it. There is humor involved, though no puns. The exam itself is tangentially relevant and the LTPF, too, even more so. Something humorous just happened at the time of writing the puzzle, and you heard it. Another person was involved, human, adult and female, a friend of yours though not on LTPF. Is that an accurate recap of what we know so far? Did I miss anything? |

Ok, so...While walking back to your dorm, after taking your last exam, Yes, FA you started singing a certain song. Yes Acing the exam is irrelevant (though I hope you did). Thank you! The song had some particular significance to the moment, though this will likely mislead us. Yes, because of the FA above Something yopishly Sort of caused you to think of it while you were walking back to your dorm, Yes, same probable FA but nothing to do with packing, the subject of the exam, or any question on it. Exactly. By the way, I have about an hour to pack, starting now - wish me luck! There is humor involved, though no puns. Correct The exam itself is tangentially relevant and the LTPF, too, even more so. Also correct Something humorous just happened at the time of writing the puzzle, Yes, a half-hour before and you heard it. Well, "heard" isn't the right word for it...possible FA. Another person was involved, human, adult and female, a friend of yours though not on LTPF. Correct Is that an accurate recap of what we know so far? Did I miss anything? That's pretty good, though there are a few FAs, both probable and possible, which I have marked. |

how is it an FA that it was your last exam or you were walking back to your dorm, when it was your wording?! *pokes it* Those are both correct, but you have an FA about the sequence of events. You've got the love? I don't know if I do or not, but in any case, that is not the answer. Did your friend hear you singing? No Relevant? Yesish Were you singing to her? No To yourself? This... To nobody in particular? ...or this. Did she also sing? No Was she involved in the humorous event? Yes Is that exam at all relevant? Only that it was my last one - the content of the exam is not relevant at all! And it's not as relevant as other things that have not been determined. Could it be any other exam? Theoretically, it could be any of these Or a driving test? or a job interview? |

I should be studying for my calc final that's at 1 PM today, but seeing as I studied about half an hour combined for my two midterms and got grades of 90 and 91 I think I'll be fine. Especially since I learned everything in this course in AP last year so it's just a refresher. Sadly, I only got a 3 on the AP Exam so I couldn't place out of Calculus I. But as an actuarial major, perhaps it's for the better anyway since relearning important material never hurts. Anyway, would the song by any chance be the one that goes "I put my hands up in the air sometime singing ay-oh, gotta let go!"? (I forget the name of it, but it's used in the theme song for UConn Soccer. But I digress). Or is it the Elon Fight song? Elon alma matter? Some song that would be well-known to Elon students but probably not to most other people? Or would most people (or at least Americans) have heard of it? Is it a song from [LTPF list of decades]? Is it [LTPF list of music genres]? Would it work if it were an instrumental? A folk song? The Elon fight song? Elon alma matter? Another song of the same genre? The Star-Spangled Banner? Another song by the same artist as the song you actually sang? Is there any other song for which it would have worked? Relevant that it were a coffee shop? Could it have been an ice cream shop (assuming there were one on-campus, like there is at UConn - fresh, homemade ice cream too, but again, I digress). An off-campus coffee shop (like Starbucks)? An off-campus ice cream shop? The campus bookstore? An off-campus bookstore? (Just trying to think of something non-food related)? If you had ran into her directly after leaving the exam? Was she in your class (that is, the one the exam was from)? Another class? Did she live in your residence hall? Any of this relevant? Is her year (freshman, sophomore, junior, senior, grad student) relevant? Would this work if you ran into one of your professors? The one whose class the exam was in? If you met one of your friends from home? Ooh, random question: did you literally run into her? Like you were running, and crashed into her? |

Would it work if it were another one of your friends from college? One of your classmates (in that class)? Had she completed all of her exams? That day? Before that day? Is there any relevant characteristic of your lady friend that we haven't established yet? Is any aspect of the long other than the lyrics relevant? The artist? The tune? The era in which it was written? By the way, I find it amusing that you didn't pick up on the fact that it couldn't possibly work for an instrumental since you couldn't very well sing that. I put that in there intentionally. |

Can we call your female friend Ezmeralda? Did Ezmerelda say the relevant thing? Did you? Did it relate to the fact that you had finished all your exams? That she hadn't? That you were so much luckier than her? Is there any relevant aspect of you that would help? Like the fact that you live far away? If you lived in North Carolina, would this work? Or if you were at UConn (but still lived in Connecticut)? Is there any relevant aspect about Elon itself that would help? Could this have happened at Duke? UConn? Walla Walla Community College? Carnegie Mellon University of Qatar? On a side note, CMU of Qatar is on the Common App. The regular Carnegie Mellon is not. So I've heard of several people doing a Common App search for Carnegie Mellon and applying to the one in Doha by mistake. |

RECAP REDUX: After my final final this past semester, I went to a coffee shop on campus and ran into a friend their who had not yet completed her exams (she had one left). After we talked and I left, I started singing a certain '70s rock song to myself, as our conversation had reminded me of the song (more specifically, its title). The relevant part of our conversation involved the fact that I was done with exams and she was not. HINT: Two angles of attack are possible: figuring out the song, or figuring out the relevant thing said. Figuring out which part of the conversation is relevant should help too. |

RE-RE-RECAP: After my last final this past semester, I went to a coffee shop on campus and ran into a friend their who had not yet completed her exams (she had one left). After we parted, I started singing the song "Two Out of Three Ain't Bad" to myself, as our parting words had reminded me of the song's title. It is relevant that I was finished with exams and she was not. If needed, I can supply a hint. |

Did she wish you luck on your exams? Yes, with the tiniest of -ishes along, theoretically, with two other things that were actually appropriate? Yes You're almost there, but the faux pas has not been identified yet. I will give you the transcript of the conversation, but only what I said: ME: Good luck on your exam... HER: ______ ME: ...enjoy winter break... HER: ______ ME: ...and see you in January! HER: ______ So exactly what did she say? |

ME: Good luck on your exam... HER: ______ You too! This, every time. ME: ...enjoy winter break... HER: ______ I will! ME: ...and see you in January! HER: ______ Merry Christmas/Happy Chanukkah/similar? So exactly what did she say? Something like that? Enough for the **********SPOILER********** After my last exam, I ran into a friend at a coffee shop on campus - she happened to have one exam left. After our conversation, I said three goodbyes: -Good luck on your exams, -Enjoy winter break, -And see you in January! To all three of these, she responded "You too!" However, since I had no exams left, only 2 out of her 3 "You too!"s were correct, prompting the song "Two Out of Three Ain't Bad" to get stuck on my head while I was walking back to my dorm. Thus endeth this long-lasting puzzle. Nice work everyone - Eli, Kaygee, Cupofsun, Peter, Gregory, Biograd, Galfisk, Woodworm - and special thanks to two people: Kaylee, who did most of the work and got the solve; and Kalira, who not only figured out a big piece, but to whom I can now say: I've been to Waffle House now. |

Yay for random semi-greasy diner food!! Also, I like how this lasted just long enough for your winter break -- I'm assuming you started back up again some time this week or last. So, I take it the grades were satisfactory enough that your parents aren't going to physically cut you off from that website you've accumulated 10,000+ posts on? ;-D |

=D I did just fine, and I may be able to come up with a puzzle related to that. We started up on the 4th for winter term, which lasts until the 25th - spring semester starts on Feb. 1st. So yes, it's back to homework and studying - and semi-greasy diner food, of course =) |
