Disappointment killed the bird. The cat and its curiosity are NOT relevant. |

"Killed" as in caused to become dead? Or "killed" as in ruined the effect of? (Like if the bird were singing a beautiful song and someone started singing along, that would "kill" the beauty of the bird. Sorry, I'm just trying to think of good examples that involve birds.) Overcame completely or with irresistible effect? (Like when you say "Oh, that movie killed me" because it was so awesome. So the bird was so overcome by disappointment that I don't know, but perhaps didn't literally die) To defeat or veto (like a bill - perhaps they were voting on whether to have a bird in the building or if that was in violation of health code) Is the bird's species relevant? If so, is it [LTPF List of Birds]? Bird = one specific bird? Or a whole species of bird? And it became extinct? Like the dodo? |

Total shot in the dark but: Magic tricks relevant? Pigeons in collapsing cages? Is the birdcage relevant, if there is one? Did Linda put the bird in this other object/place where it was flattened? Was the bird in a regular Christmas present box? After her initial disappointment, did she take an action that directly caused the birds death? Did she crush the bird with her own body? Did something fall on it? |

So Linda is given a small bird for Christmas. It is in a cage. She is disappointed to get it. It is then taken out of the cage and handed to her. At this point for some reason, she squeezes it too hard, and kills it. Is this timeline correct? Or is her disappointment after the bird is handed to her? Relevant what order? Does she know the bird is real? Not a toy? Is she trying to hand the bird back to someone? Put the bird down/somewhere else? When she kills the bird is she distracted by something/someone else? Does she clench her fist out of anger? Is she trying to get it to talk? Did she want a parrot? Lol. I'm just shooting in the dark here aren't I? |

Did Linda intentionally squeeze the bird? yes But without meaning to kill it? that's really hard to say... but I think she didn't rationally decide to kill it Was she trying to make the bird smaller? no So Linda is given a small bird for Christmas. It is in a cage. She is disappointed to get it. It is then taken out of the cage and handed to her. At this point for some reason, she squeezes it too hard, and kills it. Is this timeline correct? yes, this is correct and almost the solution Or is her disappointment after the bird is handed to her? Relevant what order? yesish, see above Does she know the bird is real? yes Not a toy? yes Is she trying to hand the bird back to someone? no Put the bird down/somewhere else? yes When she kills the bird is she distracted by something/someone else? no Does she clench her fist out of anger? no, not anger, but Is she trying to get it to talk? no Did she want a parrot? no Lol. I'm just shooting in the dark here aren't I? No, you're pretty close. There are just some details missing: The reason for her disappointment and why she squeezes the bird so hard (Okay, this is not super relevant). |

Had Linda asked for something else specific that we need to know? Something that one might squeeze? A stuffed animal? A stuffed bird? That is her reason for the disappointment? Is she trying to put the bird down? Back in it's cage? Into something else? Onto the floor, table, some other object in the room? She clenches her fist not out of anger, but... anxiety? Fear? Surprise? Does the bird do anything relevant? Excrement relevant? |

Ok, does the bird... chirp? Move? Fly? Try to fly? Bite her (I'm thinking it's this one)? Appear dead? Flutter it's wings? Is the thing she asked for... related to birds? A toy? A game? Bigger than a bread box? Man made or natural? Made of metal, wood, plastic, cloth? By the way, how old is Linda, LTPF list of ages...? Is squeezing the bird the action she WOULD have taken with the present she wanted, if she had received it? (Longshot, I know) Play-doh? Something malleable? |

Is what she asked for another animal?! Dog this one, cat, [LTPF list of animals]? Or is it an object? Alive or dead? Organic compound? Looks like you've found all the relevant information, so here's the ********SPOILER******** This puzzle is based on the short story "Links Unterm Christbaum" (On the left under the christmas tree). A little girl desperately wishes for a dog, but her family tells her that it's impossible for them to keep one. However, her grandpa tells her she'll get "something that is alive" for Christmas, and of course she's all excited. The present turns out to be a little blue bird, hence the disappointment. Her grandfather places it on her hand and it suddenly bites her. She clenches her fist, and when she opens it, the bird is dead. By the way, the story ends with the sentence "It's not easy to be a child and to know that you're someone who kills birds out of disappointment". When I first read it as a child, it made me cry, and I still can't read it without getting sad. |
