Did someone even check the facts? That makes no sense at all...Not to mention, it's insulting. |

it = A statement? An action? An event? Insulting... in general? A certain group of people? |

it = A statement? This is closest. An action? An event? Insulting... in general? A certain group of people? Thisish. Although more people should feel insulted on behalf of the "group", I would think...but they seem to miss the point. |

Is the nativity story relevant? The historical facts? The way we celebrate Christmas nowadays? Is the specific group that might consider it insulting women? men? people from a certain ethic/religious background? From a certain country? |

I meant ethnic, sorry. So, people from a certain ethnic background? From a certain ethical background? Not from a country, but... from a continent? Region? City? |

I meant ethnic, sorry. So, people from a certain ethnic background? From a certain ethical background? Not from a country, but... from a continent? This. And to save invoking the LTPF list, it's Africa. Region? City? Race relevant? Not really. |

The facts...related to Christmas? Related to Africa? This, mostly. All three, really, but someone seriously screwed up as far as geography and climate when making this thing up... Related to Africans? |

Did someone make a false claim about Africa? That it was a country? When it's really a continent? |

Did someone make a false claim about Africa? More than one. That it was a country? When it's really a continent? I don't think that was actually stated, but I wouldn't be surprised if the lyricists were that stupid, what with all the other mistakes that were made... |

Is it a Christmas song? Well, it mentions Christmas, and it's a song, so I suppose it's a Christmas song, although its message is a little...off... A Christmas poem? Not this. |

OK, the solution... The song: "Do They Know it's Christmas?" by Band Aid. The climate error: "And there won't be snow in Africa this Christmastime." The insulting part: "Well tonight thank God it's them instead of you." I think Bono had an objection to that line which was satisfied before he would record it. I can't remember the details though. |

Yes, more or less. Full lyrics and objections following, so ***SPOILER*** It's Christmas time There's no need to be afraid It's Christmas time We let in light and we banish shade And in our world of plenty We can spread a smile of joy Throw your arms around the world At Christmas time But say a prayer Pray for the other ones At Christmas time it's hard But when you're having fun There's a world outside your window And it's a world of dread and fear Where the only water flowing Is the bitter sting of tears And the Christmas bells that ring there Are the clanging chimes of doom Well tonight thank God it's them Instead of you... And there won't be snow in Africa this Christmas time Not even on Mt. Kilimanjaro? The greatest gift they'll get this year is life Where nothing ever grows, no rain or rivers flow Ever heard of the Nile? Do they know it's Christmas time at all? I'm sure all the CHRISTIANS do...and probably even people who don't celebrate it do know about it... Here's to you Raise your glass to everyone Here's to them Underneath that burning sun Yeah, there's this tiny thing called *night time*. And another called *winter*. Also, not all of Africa is a desert, but the part that is, is probably freezing at night. Feed the world Feed the world Feed the world Let them know it's Christmas time and Feed the world Let them know it's Christmas time and Feed the world Let them know it's Christmas time and...Yeah, it's ok to suggest compassion for the needy, but making the whole continent of Africa and all its inhabitants sound like heat-plagued, starving, 'savages' who need to be "saved" is more than a little patronizing and insulting, not to mention inaccurate and stupid (as is their grasp on geography and climate). Not the best message at Christmas, I think. What's everyone else's take? |
