For many years, I had a scrund about the spelling of a royal name. I suspect many of my friends had the same scrund at some point in their lives, although the vast majority of people probably never have. What is this mystery scrund, and why would I have it? |

*pounces on this puzzle, while informing the Grand Master of Gregory Coke Land that exploration is once again on* A royal name = the name of a current monarch? A historical one? One borne by many monarchs? Just one? Not a monarch, but a member of a royal family? A prince? Princess? A consort? The royal/s in question: Male? Female? |

*pounces on this puzzle, while informing the Grand Master of Gregory Coke Land that exploration is once again on* Ok, where do I look again? A royal name = the name of a current monarch? A historical one? One borne by many monarchs? Just one? Not a monarch, but a member of a royal family? A prince? Princess? A consort? None of these, possible FA The royal/s in question: Male? Female? Female, could mislead due to above FA |

It's my LatVenture, "How do we get out?" I linked you to it in the email. It's very long, but there's plenty of recaps of inventory, so if you want to skip to near the end and save in-depth reading for later, just know that a letter from Captain Jack Sparrow sent us on our quest through the fifty US states in order of statehood, Gregory Coke Land's version, that is. We've made it to Louisiana so far and we're state quarter-hunting. A name that means "royal"? Or "queen"? Is the royal name fictional? Hint to clear up the FA? |

A name that means "royal"? Or "queen"? None of these, but you're OTRT. Is the royal name fictional? No Hint to clear up the FA? It's not an individual royal ruler's name. |

Is it a name borne by several rulers? Queens? Princesses? Empresses? A combination? Any particular country? |

Is it a name borne by several rulers? Queens? Princesses? Empresses? A combination? Any particular country? Same FA, though it would apply in certain countries. Since apparently you need a bigger hint, I'll give you one - it's a title (ie "King", "Princess", etc. though neither of those) |

Oh, I see. Thanks for clearing up the FA...well then. Empress? Queen-Empress? Grand Duchess? Countess? Duchess? Madame Royale? (Where "Princess Royal" comes from) Similar to any of those? |

Did you and your friends have this scrund because you knew someone whose name was similar to the title we're looking for? Because you lived in a town with a similar name? Do you think any of us here has ever had the same scrund? |

(If you were...I want to know who taught you that, and poke them.) Did you just come up with that because it sounds like it? Just believe it because no one corrected you and it didn't come up? |

Were you taught that it was spelled that way? No There is a Dutchess county in CT - relevant? See below Oops...actually it is in NY, huh? Yes it is. And that is the *****SPOILER**** I grew up in Dutchess County, New York. It apparently got this spelling because Duchess used to be spelled Dutchess back in the 1600s when the British came. So I thought that was the (current) correct spelling. Apparently in the 1980s it was proposed to change the spelling to Duchess County, but as one local put it "It may have been patriotic to throw the tea overboard at Boston Harbor, but to throw the "t" overboard in Dutchess County would be exactly the opposite." Good job, especially Kayegee |
