Andrew walked into a bar and gently asked for a beer. The bartender got angry and threw him out. How come? |

Does the fact that Andrew asked "gently" for a beer have anything to do with it? Is the fact that Andrew asked for beer important? Would it have made a difference if he had asked for wine? Spirits? Water? |

Was he trying to get the bar to sell Beer X? yesish I'll do a short recap to get the beer brands straight: Andrew walks into a bar and asks for a Beer X, although the bar usually sells Beer Y (X's rival). Lots of people have done exactly the same before. The bartender gets angry and throws him out. |

Kölsch — pale, light-bodied, beer which can only legally be brewed in the Cologne region. 11-12° Plato, 4.5-5% ABV. Altbier — a dark amber, hoppy beer brewed around Düsseldorf. 11-12° Plato, 4.5-5% ABV. |

"The rivalry between the cities of Cologne and Düsseldorf, bitter in the past but today mostly a humorous matter, is often expressed by the preference of one of these types of beer, and ordering the wrong kind in the wrong city has in fact resulted in abuse and even violence in the past, although today a couple of jokes about "immigrants" or "foreigners" is probably all that would result." Where's the rivalry and what did Andrew do where? lol, you just answered it... So here comes the ********SPOILER******** I grew up in Leverkusen, a town right between Cologne and Düsseldorf, two cities that have had a great rivalry for almost 1000 years. Both cities brew their local beer, Kölsch in Cologne and Alt in Düsseldorf. Andrew walked into a bar in Düsseldorf and ordered a glass of Kölsch which is a very common prank. Usually, the bartender makes a joke or tells you that Kölsch is not sold in Düsseldorf, but our poor Andrew came across one of those who get very angry. |
