Did her disguise help her avoid the danger permanently (as after the one incident with disguise she will not be in danger any more)? Did she kill the potential abuser or make him somehow uncapable of sexual abuse in future? She must have stayed in the place because: that was closed area and noone could get out? quarantine? she must have taken care about somebody who couldn't move? she had nowhere else to go? other reason? |

Has she ever visited the one she was supposed to visit? No. The person-to-be-visited relevant? Not particularly - you can assume it's not just one person, but the entire unit. Is this relevant why she was supposed to visit that person? Yes. She wanted to prove she can go to the camp and visit safely: simply to win the claim/the bet? No bet. To get financial benefit? To get personal benefit? In the sense of not getting abused in the process, yes. |

Sometime in the 18th century, a single teenage girl dressed up as a soldier and went to a British army camp. She wore the disguise to protect herself against the entire company of soldiers in the camp. She had been summoned to the camp, though she did not wish to go -- she felt she had no choice. Hint: Who was she forced to visit? |

We established before that she had to visit the entire unit, for their personal interest. Is there more to this? Was that unit the only one in the camp? Was it a specific unit? Is the number of soldiers in the unit relevant? Is any specific feature of the unit relevant? |

We established before that she had to visit the entire unit, for their personal interest. Is there more to this? What was their interest? Was that unit the only one in the camp? Assume yes. Was it a specific unit? Is the number of soldiers in the unit relevant? Is any specific feature of the unit relevant? No to the rest. |

Was her idea to go to the camp and therefore obey the order/the summoning and go in disguise not to, well, please their interest? Would she be punished if she had not gone there? She had no choice due to financial reason? |

Was her idea to go to the camp and therefore obey the order/the summoning and go in disguise not to, well, please their interest? OTRT. Would she be punished if she had not gone there? She had no choice due to financial reason? Neither. Remember that folksong logic is in effect here. Your mileage may vary. |

I'm stuck... Did they let her go because they were astonished by her bravery and her idea with disguise? No, they tried to stop her. This is actually fairly close to solution. The element you haven't got is something that wouldn't really work outside a folksong... Hint: The soldiers knew she was coming to their camp. |

So, a woman in her late teens went to the military camp, because she was summonned there and she felt there is no other choice than to obey. She was afraid that she could get abused, so she went there dressed up as a soldier. She made her disguise with help of tailor and barber. While in the camp, she told the soldiers that she needed shelter and that someone was coming after her. Later on she revealed her true identity to everybody who happened to be watching and told them also the actual circumstances. Although the soldiers tried to stop her, she went safely home. Is that correct? Did she get any help from other people, while in the camp? |

Was her idea to make them refuse her entering the camp? So that the summonning was no longer binding for her? And after that she revealed her identity? Got it. It fell out upon one Martinmas time, when snow lay on the border, There came a troop of soldiers here to take up their winter quarters. And they rode up and they rode down, and they rode o'er the border, And there they met with a nice little girl, and she was a farmer's daughter. Chorus: With me right fol adle eedle idle addy-o With me right fol adle eedle eyrie And they made her swear a solemn oath, with the salt tear in her eye, O That she would come to the quarter-gates, when no one did her spy, O So she's gone to the barber's shop, to the barber's shop went soon, O Made them cut her long yellow hair, as short as any dragoon, O Then she's gone to the tailor's shop, and dressed in soldier's clothes, O Two long pistols down by her side, a nice little boy was she, O Then she's gone to the quarter-gates, and loudly she does call, O "There comes a troop of soldiers here, and we must have lodgings all, O" The quarter-master he comes out, and gives her half a crown, O "Go find your lodgings in the town, tonight there is no room, O" Then she's moved closer to the gates, and louder she does call, O, "Room, room, ye gentlemen, for we must have lodgings all, O" The quarter-master he comes out, and gives her eighteen pence, O, "Go find your lodgings in the town, for tonight there comes a wench, O" So she took a whistle from her side, and blew it loud and shrill, O "You're all very free with your eighteen pence, but you're not for a girl at all, O" Then she took the garters from her knees, the ribbon from her hair, O Tied them round the quarter-gates as a token she's been there, O And when they found that it was her, they tried to have her taken, But she's clapped her spurs to her horse's sides, and she's galloped home a maiden |
