However, as I don't know much about other manufacturers, it's difficult to know if he would have made the same mistake with another brand. The normal ones of course; power, disc activitiy, etc. But those are usually the normal green, orange, red variety. This LED is different. I did a quick search on the term (for the functonality of the LED), and it might be present on other manufacturers' servers as well, but I am not certain what colours they may have chosen. A wireless something-or-other? Yes, it does connect wirelessly the function he thought it was. A UFO? Nope A communication thingy? Yes, it is meant for communication That shows that it is communicating with something? Or that actually transmits the communication signal? You mean the LED it self? Back then it was mainly indicating that the functionality was switched on. These days I don't think it's common any more with a LED, at least I cannot find any blue LEDs on my phone, even though that functionality is present. | ||

Bluetooth? Yes, that's the one! So now it's time for a ********SPOILER********** My colleague got a phone call from a customer, who said that the bluetooth on his HP Proliant DL-series didn't work. My colleague was truly confused, because he had never heard of any servers with Bluetooth. While talking to the customer, he did a thorough search in our databases for all the technical information he could dig up on that model. In the end he asked for the serialnumber, in order to break it down in spareparts. No bluetooth showed up anywhere. So he told the customer that he couldn't find any information about bluetooth and asked why he thought there should be a bluetooth functionality on that model and, more important - how he had determined it had failed. The customer answered that he had switched on the Bluetooth on his phone, but the phone did not pick up the server at all, and the server should be visible 'as its Bluetooth radio is definitely switched on because the blue Bluetooth LED is lit'. My colleague asked 'the blue LED in front of the server'? Something the customer confirmed. After finishing the call, my colleague said that he could almost hear the customer blushing at the other end of the phone, when he explained that the blue LED was the UID, meant to identify one server amongst dozens of others installed in large racks, if service was needed on a single one. The customer had obviously not even unwrapped the manual as this function is described on one of the first pages. | ||
