He = H? A? M? The blushing - coming from a person? H? A? F? At the other end...of a phone line? |

Is this from NotAlwaysRight? If so, is "He" a telephone call center dude? Can we call him Peggy (after that guy from the Discover commercial)? If so, is there only one person at the other end? Is the person HAM? HAF? If it's a man, can we call him Josephus? If it's a woman, can we call her Henrietta? Did Josephus/Henrietta say something completely embarassing? Was this a tech support call? Or a billing center call? Did Josephus/Henrietta dial the wrong number? with comic effects? (Like when the guy dialed the adult website number asking "How much for my daughter" because he was looking for the driving school) Or did he dial someone's home instead of the call center? Or did this occur at a business that wasn't a call center per se? Such as a pizza delivery? Or a food restaurant not delivery? Or some other store? A grocery store? A college/university? Another school? Did Henrietta/Josephus misspeak (like say "Stop tasting my wine" instead of "stop wasting my time")? Does this story even relate to a stupid customer at all? Ooh, is it the guy who stuck the live mouse in his computer (I read that on NotAlwaysRight about a week ago)? |

Nope If so, is "He" a telephone call center dude? He is. Can we call him Peggy (after that guy from the Discover commercial)? Sure, why not? Even though I have no idea what you're talking about, lol If so, is there only one person at the other end? Yes Is the person HAM? Yes HAF? If it's a man, can we call him Josephus?Sure, no problem. If it's a woman, can we call her Henrietta? Did Josephus/Henrietta say something completely embarassing? Oh, yeah! Was this a tech support call? Yes, a true story from my previous job Or a billing center call? Did Josephus/Henrietta dial the wrong number? with comic effects? (Like when the guy dialed the adult website number asking "How much for my daughter" because he was looking for the driving school) Or did he dial someone's home instead of the call center? Another school? Did Henrietta/Josephus misspeak (like say "Stop tasting my wine" instead of "stop wasting my time")? No all the rest Does this story even relate to a stupid customer at all? Hmm, difficult one. The reason and question were stupid enough, but I wouldn't necessarily judge him to be a stupid person per se. Ooh, is it the guy who stuck the live mouse in his computer (I read that on NotAlwaysRight about a week ago)? No |

Software? The internet? Some electronic device besides a computer? Are you "Peggy"? (If so, I hope you're better than the Peggy in the Discover Commercials)? Being put on hold relevant? Was someone singing in the hold music and Josephus asked where you learned to sing so beautifully but could you please help him instead of musically perofmring? Was he using Windows? [List of Windows Operating Systems]? Mac? [List of Mac operating systems]? Is some other meaning of a computer term relevant? Like he thought the mouse was an animal? Or that the CD he got to install a program must be hardware because it was hard? Or knowing it was software but asking if it was broken since it shouldn't be hard? Or mixing up an install Wizard with Harry Potter? Mixing up similarly-sounding words relevant? Program and pogrom perhaps? |

"Was he not operating it correctly?" "He was". So does this mean he WAS operating it correctly, or he was not operating it correctly? I always get confused by these question/answer styles. Was it one of those Tablet PCs (like with the little touch screen thingamabobbers)? Or was it one of those touch-screen computers in restaurants that they use to input the orders? Or something similar in functionality, but in a different place? Ooh.... Was it not plugged in? (Per above, answer something either along the lines of "It was plugged in" or "No, it wasn't plugged in", don't say something like "It was" again) And he asked why it wouldn't turn on? |

Did he think the computer could do something impossible? As in something no normal person would think computer equipment would be able to do, like making you a cup of coffee or walk to the shop for you? Then no. But he was inquiring about a spesific feature. I guess a good first step is to determine what type of computer equipment we're talking about. And also, there's something relevant about our caller, Josephus. |

Was his inquiry about peripherals or about the main unit? If the latter: HDD? CPU? Memory? Motherboard? Network card? USB? Video card? Audio? (less likely on a server but who knows...)Power source? FDD? Optical drive? If the former: keyboard? mouse? backup devices (tape units, etc)? Modems? Display? Printer? Scanner? The OS is irrelevant, correct? Did he form his mistaken impression by visually inspecting the device / part of device in question? While in operation? While shut down? From a message he got on the screen? From the result of some tests he ran? Apart from the OS, is any other piece of software relevant? Trying to ascertain his level of "stupidity" : would you think is more of a "I cannot get this computer to make coffee" or more like "I don't get MS SQL server to run on Linux"? As per the puzzle statement, did he eventually recognize that he was actually asking a stupid question? Is the computer's role as a server relevant? Networking relevant? Do we need to know the hardware manufacturer? (some HP equipment not working on IBM blades, or something like that?) Did he made an obvious error in the configuration and now blamed the hardware for his errors? (Like putting in a wrong IP address and claiming the NIC is faulty?) |

Balin (Balin) My dad would probably figure this out; he's the computer expert of the family. Well, tell him this story when the puzzle is done and he will fall over laughing, lol Did he think a certain part (or parts) of the server was broken? hmm, I guess you may say Yes. Rbruma (Rbruma) Was his inquiry about peripherals or about the main unit? Main unit If the latter: HDD? CPU? Memory? Motherboard? Network card? USB? Video card? Audio? (less likely on a server but who knows...)Power source? FDD? Optical drive? No to all, but you're sort of touching something with the 'audio' part. You wouldn't need audio on a server, would you?? If the former: keyboard? mouse? backup devices (tape units, etc)? Modems? Display? Printer? Scanner? The OS is irrelevant, correct? Correct Did he form his mistaken impression by visually inspecting the device / part of device in question? Yes While in operation? Yes While shut down? No From a message he got on the screen? No From the result of some tests he ran? Yes-ish, for svv of 'test' Apart from the OS, is any other piece of software relevant? No Trying to ascertain his level of "stupidity" : would you think is more of a "I cannot get this computer to make coffee" or more like "I don't get MS SQL server to run on Linux"? It's more like the 'not able to make coffee' one, to be honest. As per the puzzle statement, did he eventually recognize that he was actually asking a stupid question? Yes, that's were the blushing part comes in. At the end of the converstation, when my colleague explained it to him, my colleague himself said that 'I could almost hear the guy blush at the other end of the phone'. Is the computer's role as a server relevant? The role of the server? No. But it is relevant that it is a server, hardware wise. Networking relevant? No Do we need to know the hardware manufacturer? (some HP equipment not working on IBM blades, or something like that?) Tricky one. Your example is not correct, and not on the right track either. However, as I don't know much about other manufacturers, it's difficult to know if he would have made the same mistake with another brand. I was working for HP/Compaq and the server we're discussing here is a Proliant, one of the pizza box models. And it was brand new out of the box when he called in. Did he made an obvious error in the configuration and now blamed the hardware for his errors? (Like putting in a wrong IP address and claiming the NIC is faulty?) No |

The color: red? green? yellow? orange? something else? Did he realize that the led's purpose was to show good function / malfunction of a certain component? Or did he think they were there just for decoration? Did he ever work with a server before? A similar type of server? Trying to get stupidity rational is harder than expected :-) |

Or did he think they were there just for decoration? The latter one is a definite no. He did not think the led was for decoration only. But the first one - he did not realize what the led was for and misinterpreted it. Did he ever work with a server before? A similar type of server? He might have worked with servers, I hope so at least. But I doubt he had worked with a similar type. If he had, he would have known. |

Blue light - did he think the server was for sale? Seriously though, did he think the light was supposed to be a different color? That there was supposed to be a light at all? Did he think the blue light meant something else? |

Blue light - did he think the server was for sale? Nope, he did not, lol Seriously though, did he think the light was supposed to be a different color? No That there was supposed to be a light at all? He might have been confused about that blue light, but he didn't think it should NOT have been lit, if that is what you meant. Did he think the blue light meant something else? Yes, very much so. |

Did the light actually signify that something was working? That the server was on? |

Did the light actually signify that something was working? Tricky. I guess it's sort of Yes, but that might be slightly misleading. That the server was on? Nope |

A little hint before I'm off to bed. The server was a HP DL-series. And it was very relevant that the led was blue. He would not have made the same error if the led had been a different colour. |

Are blue LEDs common to another type of server? To HP-DL servers? |

Are blue LEDs common to another type of server? Not to my knowledge, and that is irrelevant. These leds are common on most of the HP Proliant models though. The important thing is their function. To HP-DL servers? See above |

The normal ones of course; power, disc activitiy, etc. But those are usually the normal green, orange, red variety. This LED is different. I did a quick search on the term (for the functonality of the LED), and it might be present on other manufacturers' servers as well, but I am not certain what colours they may have chosen. So why don't you try a little Google-wizardry, lol?? |

Did he think the LED was for power/disc activity/some other thing which LEDs are commonly used for? And that it was the wrong color? |

Did he think the LED was for power/disc activity/some other thing which LEDs are commonly used for? None of these, but he did think that it indicated a spesific functionality. HINT: Something that is not (to my knowledge at least) found on servers and the colour of the LED is the biggest clue. And that it was the wrong color? No |

Does one find the said functionality on desktop computers? Laptops? Other devices? Even though it would technically be possible to find it in all three, it is much more common on mobile devices and laptops than desktops. |

A wireless something-or-other? Yes, it does connect wirelessly the function he thought it was. A UFO? Nope A communication thingy? Yes, it is meant for communication That shows that it is communicating with something? Or that actually transmits the communication signal? You mean the LED it self? Back then it was mainly indicating that the functionality was switched on. These days I don't think it's common any more with a LED, at least I cannot find any blue LEDs on my phone, even though that functionality is present. |

Bluetooth? Yes, that's the one! So now it's time for a ********SPOILER********** My colleague got a phone call from a customer, who said that the bluetooth on his HP Proliant DL-series didn't work. My colleague was truly confused, because he had never heard of any servers with Bluetooth. While talking to the customer, he did a thorough search in our databases for all the technical information he could dig up on that model. In the end he asked for the serialnumber, in order to break it down in spareparts. No bluetooth showed up anywhere. So he told the customer that he couldn't find any information about bluetooth and asked why he thought there should be a bluetooth functionality on that model and, more important - how he had determined it had failed. The customer answered that he had switched on the Bluetooth on his phone, but the phone did not pick up the server at all, and the server should be visible 'as its Bluetooth radio is definitely switched on because the blue Bluetooth LED is lit'. My colleague asked 'the blue LED in front of the server'? Something the customer confirmed. After finishing the call, my colleague said that he could almost hear the customer blushing at the other end of the phone, when he explained that the blue LED was the UID, meant to identify one server amongst dozens of others installed in large racks, if service was needed on a single one. The customer had obviously not even unwrapped the manual as this function is described on one of the first pages. |

This happened in the week before our 2004 or 2005 Christmas party, and it was the subject for most jokes at that party. All teams talked about the Bluetooth server, lol. |
