They call me a first offender and a loser, and place me in the last position...yet I am happy about this. Why? As always, "I" = me (Balin) |

Is sport relevant? Did you actually lose anything? Offender as someone who offended somebody else? Or as a game player with an offensive role? Is the last position actually the worst? |

Is sport relevant? No Did you actually lose anything? No Offender as someone who offended somebody else? Noish Or as a game player with an offensive role? No Is the last position actually the worst? Technically, the worst would be not having a position at all. |

"First offender" is a term I associate with criminology. Is any crime relevant? Another breach of law? Of another rule? If any rule breaking is relevant: Did it occur in real life? Or only in imagination? |

No to all, but this is a true story If any rule breaking is relevant: Did it occur in real life? Or only in imagination? Is the title relevant? Only in the sense of the term "Loser," which I also used in the puzzle statement If so, is Spanish relevant? Is Beck? So no to these |

Is this a kind of "lucky loser" thing? That somebody who doesn't qualify to something at first, get the chance to participate, because he/she is the best of those not qualified? |

Or is it a competition where you had to qualify (and did) and were happy just to qualify even though you finished last? Or is it something along the lines of the study which shows that Olympic competitors who finish in last place (that is, among those who actually finish and don't get DNF or DQ) are actually much happier than those who finish in fourth place (just off the medal stand) mainly because these people often have backstories that make just competing and finishing a great accomplishment, whereas whoever finished in fourth just missed winning a medal, which is probably the main reason they came. Is it something in a similar vein to this? |

No, not like this Or is it a competition where you had to qualify (and did) and were happy just to qualify even though you finished last? Well, there's no real "qualifying" Or is it something along the lines of the study which shows that Olympic competitors who finish in last place (that is, among those who actually finish and don't get DNF or DQ) are actually much happier than those who finish in fourth place (just off the medal stand) mainly because these people often have backstories that make just competing and finishing a great accomplishment, whereas whoever finished in fourth just missed winning a medal, which is probably the main reason they came. Is it something in a similar vein to this? Noish - there's a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place; the rest are all Honorable Mentions. |

Is it relevant what event you got an honorable mention in? Was it a sporting competition? A game competition (like chess or Halo 4)? An academic event? (Like Model UN, for instance), where one delegation/team gets first, second... and some other good ones get honorable mentions? Was it a competition where there is a clear method for choosing winners (like baseball, or soccer, or chess, or Quiz Bowl)? Something where the judges have to choose? (Like Model UN, or a Who Can Give the Best Motivational Speech Competition?) Something sort of in between involving the judges choosing based on a strict set of guidelines? (Like Olympic gymnastics, or a debate team competetition?) Oh, and were you the "worst" honorable mention? |

Does the competition involve: writing poetry? writing fiction? If so, novels? short stories? writing nonfiction? writing an essay? Writing drama? It varies, but it's usually shorter than these. Writing a diary? journal? news article? None of these, but it's for a newspaper. Or is it more about physical writing: handwriting? typing? Neither, but a high majority of the entries are typed (HINT). LTPF relevant? No |

No I don't know how to make any step further in this puzzle... Come to think of it, the rest is just Google, so... **********SPOILER********** A few weeks ago, I entered the Washington Post's weekly Style Invitational humor contest, and recently found out that I got an honorable mention. When you get your first Ink in the contest (aka "when you first get an entry published"), you are labelled a First Offender. All entrants are considered Losers, and since I (currently) only have one Ink, I am tied for last in the all-time standings. But I am happy about all this, since I actually got Ink at all. Nice job to everyone who worked on this, especially Redwine. And here's the week where I was published - my entry is on page 2. |
