For many years, I had a scrund about the success of a certain musical performer. Who is this mystery musician, and why did I have such a scrund? |

1,582 minutes before this puzzle was 1:00 AM on Sunday, January 9. Relevant? The performer: HAM? HAF? Did you have a scrund about the magnitude of the success? The type of music he/she became successful performing? The range of years over which he/she was most successful? |

Is the possible FA that the performer is no longer popular and/or successful? If so, I didn't actually assume that--it could be that the period of his success was 1995 to the present, for example. |

Was the scrund about who he was popular with? Whether he was successful at all? When you say "the success of a performer," do you mean his popularity as a musician? The money he made? His musical skill? Something related to his albums or songs? The message he was getting across? Just the fact that he "made it"? Or perhaps some success in his life separate from the music? Looking at the genres...Elton John, maybe? Van Morrison? Kenny G? |

Is it relevant what instrument he plays? In some respects, very relevant. In others, not at all. This is a tricky one and probably hedged around an FA. Does he sing as well? Yes, he sings his songs. |

Is he an a cappella performer? no. Just to clear it up, he sings but also plays an instrument. And that instrument is pretty relevant, but at the same time not really. And you're still making an FA that has not been cleared up. |

any chance of you clearing up the FA (or helping us clear it up) with a recap? please? :-) Well, it's going to be hard for me to recap without clearing up the FA, so I'm just going to do that first: The "success" is from before the musician had his more notable role in music. Now the recap: For many years, I have had a scrund about the success achieved by a notable musician. However, it is not about the success he achieved while he was nationwide famous, but rather the success he achieved in a different role before then. However, I will say (to avoid another messy FA) that the music (or some of it) that he made while famous is relevant to the scrund as well. Also, the title "1,582 Minutes" ago, meaning 1,582 minutes before I posted this puzzle at 11:22 PM Eastern Time on Sunday, January 9, 2011, will help you in solving the problem. |

Let's see...60 minutes in an hour...60 into 1582 is 26 hours, with 22 minutes left over. 24 hours in a day, of course, so 11:22 PM Eastern Time, Saturday, January 8, minus 2 hours and 22 minutes, is 9 PM Eastern Time, January 8 (which was 6 PM for me.) I hope I did my math right, otherwise I'll look stupid :-P |

Piano Man? Bingo! Indeed, he is Billy Joel, composer of "Piano Man". Did you think the song took place at 9 AM instead of 9 PM? Vice versa? No. was the performer's previous career also in show business? an artist? writer? I don't know how to answer this question other than saying the context of the song is relevant. was he an academic? a scientist? businessman? financier? Same did he achieve fame in his previous career? Noish only certain songs relevant? are they all on a particular theme? or accompanied by a particular instrument? Piano man is the only relevant song, sort of. Other songs are relevant, but it doesn't particularly matter which ones they are, other than that Joel played them. |

Any of the characters in the song relevant? Their names? Their dreams? This is a tricky one to answer, so I'm going to say that no single character in the song is relevant, but as a whole they are. It will be apparent after the next question. So which lyrics are relevant? *reproduces lyrics below* It's nine o'clock on a Saturday The regular crowd shuffles in There's an old man sitting next to me Makin' love to his tonic and gin He says, "Son, can you play me a memory I'm not really sure how it goes But it's sad and it's sweet and I knew it complete When I wore a younger man's clothes." la la la, di da da La la, di di da da dum Chorus: Sing us a song, you're the piano man Sing us a song tonight Well, we're all in the mood for a melody And you've got us all feelin' all right Now John at the bar is a friend of mine He gets me my drinks for free And he's quick with a joke and he'll light up your smoke But there's some place that he'd rather be He says, "Bill, I believe this is killing me." And the microphone smells like a beer this helped contribute it And they sit at the bar and put bread in my jar This too And say, "Man, what are you doin' here?" But mostly this. Oh, la la la, di da da La la, di da da da dum Chorus: sing us a song you're the piano man sing us a song tonight well we're all in the mood for a melody and you got us all feeling alright No to rest |

I've checked a few other lyric sites - they all have "carnival," so I think that's right. Ok. Truth is, sometimes I thought it was "carnivore" and other times I thought it was "carnival". I really was never sure. But that's besides the point. Given my scrund though, it's likely I should have thought it was "carnivore". Did you think he had been successful at the bar? Unsuccessful? this! Now just find out why (should be fairly easy) |
