Because Laurette was so conscientious, the police thought she was implicated in the crime. How come?

Crime - murder? Attempted murder? Robbery? Attempted robbery? Blackmail? Rape? Arson? Child abuse? Kidnapping?

Did Laurette try to help the police? To help solve the crime? Did she call in tips to the police? Visit the crime scene to look for evidence?

Is time relevant? Is location relevant? Any features of Laurette are relevant? Age? Profession? Race? Religion? Relevant she is a woman?
"Implicated in the crime" - the police thought she committed the crime? helped the criminal? implicated as a witness?
Was she really involved in the crime?

Did Laurette's trying to help the police resulted in: arresting the criminal? solving the case? any disturbances? getting evidence? the police getting on the wrong track?
Was she even helpful or did she only think she was helpful while in fact her actions caused troubles?
Was there actually any crime comitted?
Was suspecting Laurette justified?

your puzzle statement says 'the crime' but later you answer 'no' to the question 'was there actually any crime committed'...
was there a crime? was there something that looked like a crime? did someone say there had been a crime? was a crime suspected? but had not actually been committed?

her relevant actions: something she said? a physical action? did she appear to be getting rid of evidence? cleaning something relevant? hiding something? giving someone an alibi? covering for someone else in some way?
did they think she was involved in setting a crime up? preparing in some way? getting information to commit a crime? or help someone else?
did they think she was involved in the actual committing of a crime? as the main perpetrator? as an accessory? did they think she was involved after the crime? in covering it up? in hiding someone? in disposing of evidence? in disposing of illicit gains from a crime? is money relevant here?

So, the crime has been committed, the police doesn't know who did it, but they suspect Laurette and have yopishly/yesishly justified reason for this.
Does the police know what crime has been committed?

Maybe Laurette was the one who called the police? Or they interviewed her while investigating the crime? She reported something to the police, that was connected with crime and unknown to anybody else? The crime the police investigates is: murder? sexual abuse? kidnapping? blackmail? forgery? robbery? burglary? other?

Had she figured something out about the case? That the police hadn't? And reported it in as a tip? But the police assumed the only way she would have known that is if she'd been involved? (Kinda like the pilot episode of Psych...)

Was it the exact wording of what she said to the police what the suspicions arose from? Or was it something personal about Laurette? Is there anything relevant of Laurette we still don't know?
Was the crime about which she spoke to them the same that they were investigating?

So conscientious mean that: Laurette was too eager to help the police? Laurette wanted to tell too much to the police? Laurette was trying to do the police job and find evidence/talk to witnesses/see the place of crime/catch the criminal etc.?

her too-conscientious behaviour... was this sonething she did before talking to the police? something she did in response to a crime being committed? something she did to help the police? something she did in reponse to a request from the police? a reaction to a police question?

is it relevant when the crime took place? shortly before she was suspected by the police? a long time before?

is it relevant where the crime took place?

did she know a crime had taken place? did she know what the crime was? did she know who had committed the crime? did she have some kind of interaction with the perpetrator of the crime? was there an escaped convict?

did the police think she was lying to them? was she lying? was she being conscientious in keeping a promise she had previously made? to the criminal? not to tell certain things to the police?

What Laurette told the police was contradictory to: something that other person told the police? some material evidence?
What Laurette said to the police was objectively true? Or Laurette was convinced it's true while it was false?
Did Laurette speak to the perpetrator at any time? Did she see the perpetrator at any time? Did she hear the perpetrator at any time?

Did Laurette told the police everything she saw? yope Did she omit anything she considered irrelevant, but which was in fact relevant? noDid she told the police more than she saw, including for example her deductions, what turned on to be irrelevant? no

Did Laurette told the police only mere facts? Did she share with the police her whole knowledge about the crime and the perpetrator? Did the police ask her to describe the perpetrator for the reasons of portraiting him?

The crucial fact told by Laurette to the police, leading to suspecting her, was it concerning: identity of the perpetrator? physical features of the perpetrator? other, non-physical features of the perpetrator? details of the scene of crime? material evidence? details of the victim?

Did Laurette, after speaking to the police, realized that something she told was innacurate? That she forgot about something? Was she so conscientious in that she wanted to clear possible mistakes/misunderstandings she could have caused with her initial testimony? Did she then called the police and changed her testimony?

Did Laurette, being so conscientious, go through her statement once more at home, verified it (maybe visited the place of crime once again?) and realized she's been inaccurate? So she contacted the police to revise her statement?

is it relevant why the police questioned her a 2nd time?

Laurette told the truth both times? but her evidence had changed? because of something new she had discovered? remembered? realised?

or because the 2nd time she gave a fuller answer? and this gave the impression of a contradiction?

or was it something which was true when she said it at the first interview but then circumstances changed and the truth was something else by the 2nd interview?

so she was suspected of being involved in a crime because her testimony changed? and it changed beccause she had remembered something? or did she add something to her previous testimony? or did she state that she was unsure what she had previously said was correct?

so did she make two statements? was she telling the truth the first time? the second? did she believe she was telling the truth the first time? the second? did she realise her testimony had changed?

You have now figured out why the police suspected her. You still need to figure out is how her conscientiousness got her into this predicament. You can do it!!

Had she done something between the two interviews in order to improve her memory of what happened? like re-visiting the scene?

did her conscientiousness drive her to do something specific? or to do something in a particular way?

or to mention a detail or details which she had not been asked for?

Was she so conscientious, that she was re-thinking about her testimony? And then she realized she could have been inaccurate?

If that's not it, did the "conscientious thing" involve thinking? watching? reading?

HINT & RECAP: Add the following to the puzzle description. The police interviewed her 2x & found her second interview contradicted her first in some details, So they thought she was lying. But this actually happened because she was so conscientious. You need to figure out how her conscientiousness did her in.

is body language relevant? good manners? her emotional reaction to the crime? crying?

so she was interviewed the first time - told the truth - and there was something relevant that she didn't do? that was somehow linked to her being conscientious? but you say that she might or might not have done that same thing at the second interview?

so if she hadn't done that thing at the second interview also - why did the police think the second interview was different to the first? Sorry - not a yes/no question - but confusing me!

was the things she didn't do - asking a question? asking for police identification?

is there any written material that is relevant here? any relevant person other than the criminal, victim and police?

Hi I'm new here, just started on this one and really wanted to clear a few questions that have been bugging me.. Just let me know if I'm on the right track =)

Is Laurette truly innocent? Merely a witness to a crime?

Did her conscientiousness lead to a sub-conscious thing that she began doing after the first interview? (Hence not realising it until pointed out by police, but ultimately caused by her conscientious doing in the first place.)

Now regarding the difference..
Was it an object she did not recognise in the first interview, but recognised in the second? A voice? A sound? A smell? A sight?

Was it something she did not understand in the first, but understood (without her realising) in the second? A language? A code? A jargon?

RECAP: Add the following to the puzzle description: The police interviewed Laurette 2x and noted discrepancies between her earlier & later statements, which made them suspect she was lying. But the discrepancies were actually the result of her extreme conscientiousness, which led her NOT to do something that most people would do after giving the police a statement.

Did she give either statement at the police station? Both? If the last one, did she drive home in between the two?

I think most people would embellish a statement, perhaps even imagining extra details, so is it that she simply told her story simply without doing this?

The things one might do after giving a statement - are any of these relevant?:
tell someone else what you had just done? tell someone else the content of your statement? ask to see a transcript? ask to keep a copy of the transcript? ask to have your statement read back to you? say you'll let them know if you subsequently remember anything else? ask to be kept informed of the progress? ask if they have a suspect?

had she just forgotten stuff by the second time she asked? and if she had asked for a copy of her first statement she would have been able to remind herself of what she had said?

********** SPOILER *************
When Laurette witnessed a crime & gave her statement to the police, she did not ask for a copy of it because she realized that the police might eventually re-interview her & if so, she wanted to give her memory of the crime, not of her first statement. Unfortunately, when they did re-interview her, there were discrepancies between her first & second statements, which made the police suspicious. Thanks for sticking with it, everyone, & for solving it, Clever Hannah--I thought it would be much easier. See if my new one is!
