Botany is a perfectly respectable profession, but thew fact that Juliette's parents were botanists made her life difficult. How come? Allergies are irrel, as is travel or living in a peculiar location.

Is Juliette H/A/F? Did the difficulties occur when she was a child? Teenager? Adult?

Are her parents still alive? Would this work if only one of her parents had been a botanist?

Were the difficulties related to social interaction? school? finding a job? finding a boyfriend?

Is her name relevant? Her parents' name? Their ethnicity? religion? where they live?

Did she tell people that her parents were botanists? Did people ask her what her parents did for a living?

Did people consider her strange? Make fun of her?

Relevant when this happened?

Did she have a greenhouse at her house? Or did they grow the plants at the house itself and design it like a greenhouse? Are greenhouses relevant at all? Plants? Growing plants? Could this have happened if her parents grew and farmed plants instead of studying them?

Is this another "none-of-your-business" problem?

Or did they grow some plant associated with Jews, Israel, or something like that and they called her JEW-Liette in an Anti-Semetic fashion? Which I'm hoping isn't the case because I'm Jewish and would be quite offended if that were the solution.

Or did they study fertilizer and they called her Poo-liette? Did they call her names that rhymed with her first name? With part of her first name? Ju? Li? Ette? Juli? Liette?

Do they live in a country where people speak English? Or a different language? French (because her name sounds French)? Is learning a foreign language in school relevant? Did other children start to make fun of her after learning one or more certain words in a different language?

Is it only her first name that's relevant? Or do her first name and her family name make a funny combination?

Are yew trees relevant?

Is the scientific name of a plant relevant? Of an animal? Of a pest?

She no longer has the problem as an adult... Is it because people outgrew making fun of others in general? Or did they realize that her name isn't really that funny? Or is it because she doesn't have to state what her parents do for a living? Or because of her reaction on other persons' reaction to her name? Did she change her name? Or does one need knowledge that is more present in schoolchildren than in the average person (such as a word in a foreign language or anything biology-related beyond basic level)?

Ooh, good question Balin. Yes, it sure is! I didn't think of that

**** SPOILER **************
Unfortunately for Juliette, her botanist parents named her Nasturtium, which was not only dreadful in its own right but led to the nickname Nasty. So as soon as she reached legal adulthood, she changed her name to Juliette. The only thing relevant about her new name is that it's pretty rather than ridiculous.I'm AMAZED that someone thought that the puzzle might involve some slur on Jews because the first syllable of her name is a homophone with 'Jew.'This could lead to a new puzzle: Vivian (another name for Nimue) posted an innocuous puzzle about botanists, but someone thought she might be an anti-Semite. How come? But of course, I'd need a different forum, one where members weren't familiar with the original puzzle. Please see my new puzzle you know where.

I never thought you were an Anti-Semite. I thought the puzzle might involve Antisemitism. It's like the difference between me being a homophobe (I'm not) and me referencing the very homophobic "Tyson Homosexual" incident in one of my puzzles. (Which I did)

But you said you'd be offended if the puzzle involved Jews, & I think offense would be appropriate only if the puzzle itself were anti-Semitic. I once did post a puzzle about an anti-Semite, & no one seemed offended, since the puzzle of course did not endorse anti-Semitism.

No, I said I'd be offended if they called her "JEW-Liette" in an Antisemitic fashion. I didn't mean the solution would offend me, I meant the idea (ie that "JEW-Liette" is a way of making fun of someone) would. Sorry if that confused you.

Well, it IS a way of making fun of someone, but it's a disgusting, anti-Semtitc way of making fun of someone & no decent person would do it.

I would throw in no decent person would be make fun of someone else in a hurtful way...but that's just me.

Nimue - Darn this one went fast! Very good though.

Gregory - Glad you clarified because I understood your comment the same way Nimue did. I had the thought "Gee there's a lot of puzzles around here with Nazis...He must be pissed".

Yeah, I phrased that poorly too. I need to learn to phrase things better. I meant the idea that someone actually WOULD make fun of someone by calling them JEW-liette offended me, not the fact that they theoretically COULD. I mean if I were named Juliette (which would be creepy because I'm a guy) and someone called me JEW-liette, I'd be mad.

You wouldn't "make fun" of the Nazi, you'd just not like him. You wouldn't say "Hahahaha Nazi, your swastikas look like one of those creepy characters from some creepy horrible movie who I am to tired to remember the name of". You would say "Nazis are bad".

*snort* Yeah, I can't see me doing that. Or, you know, being all "Your goose-step makes your butt look big".

Mostly I wouldn't do that as I think, historically, Nazis did not have the best sense of humor. Also, I'm not Aryan or even fully white, so I'm thinking they wouldn't find my jokes funny. :D

I've heard funny songs that make fun of Nazis (one had a chorus that ended with, "Ve is ze master race, and we heil, heil, right in the fuhrer's face").
