Did the candle melt?It may have melted, but not necesarily because it was lit. And so didn't look as nice?It was a misshapen blob (hence the title of this puzzle), but the aesthetics were not what made it less fascinating. Was the candle even lit at all?Not at the moment it became less fascinating. You said earlier that the candle was not lit.Yes Did anyone ever try to light it?During the events of this puzzle, my dad may have tried lighting it briefly, but that is irr. and failed? was there something wrong with the wick?No--the wick looked to have survived just fine. was it the candle-holder which was fascinating? There was none. was it because the wick gave away the fact that it was a candle at all?YES! |

Did the blob look like a melted version of something else? Something that would not have been expected to melt? (That doesn't sound clear to me, so I'll give an example. Maybe it used to be a baseball shaped candle, but it melted in the heat of the attic or something. When you saw it, you thought at first that it was a melted baseball, but then saw the wick and realized it was just a baseball shaped candle. Anything like that?) |

Ambergris (from whales)? Though that is usually yellow, so I'm guessing not. If not, what type of sea creature would have produced it: a mammal (if so, a whale? dolphin? otter? sea lion? seal? polar bear?)? a fish (if so, a shark? some other cartilaginous fish? a bony fish?)? an invertebrate (if so, a clam? mussel? oyster? scallop? gastropod (e.g. conch, whelk)? crab? lobster? sea star (starfish)? Other echinoderm?)? A bird? |

Ambergris (from whales)?YES My dad likes to walk along the beach, pick up trash, and also see what interesting things he finds. One day, he found a light yellow lump of wax, and remembered from somewhere that whales produce something like that. He looked it up on the web and found out it was called ambergris, which is decently valuable stuff. The texture didn't look quite right to me, and it didn't have a distinctive smell, but there didn't seem to be much else it could be. Until when cleaning it off, the very end of the wick became visible and showed it was an old candle. **************SPOILER**************************** |
