No one? I'm going to help out with a RECAP then :-) Due to something that Frank said, he, his wife and his child have a lifetime of hardship. All of them more or less have to endure emotional and possibly financial hardship and the child has to endure physical hardship and another kind of hardship as well. The reason why the child has to suffer from those additional hardships is not a lack of food but it has to do with nutrition. When he said the thing that triggered it all, Frank was not misunderstood. The puzzle title is highly important. |

Did she misunderstand the amount that she should drink? Something about "a glass" (which denoted a specific amount) whereas she was filling a glass they happened to have, which was larger than the recommendation? Differences in type of alcohol? Like drinking a glass of wine versus drinking a glass of hard liquor (straight, one assumes which *shiver*)? |

So Frank encouraged his wife (can we call her Fiona?) to drink something during pregnancy? Which he knew contained alcohol? But for reasons not determined, he thought the alcohol wouldn't hurt the baby? Was the drink clearly an alcoholic beverage? Wine? Beer? Some sort of mixed drink? Was it marketed/presented as medicine? Kind of alcohol - I'm guessing ethanol? Because if it was methanol she'd be dead... Was he encouraging Fiona to drink the beverage because of other ingredients it contained? Was it some sort of energy shot? |

Were, err...how do I ask this delicately...Were they having marital difficulties and Frank thought a drink or two would better facilitate intimacy? (On reflection, I think my abstract phrasing actually made that LESS delicate...) Was Fiona having trouble sleeping? Muscle or back pain? |

*********** SPOILER *********** I guess you all have read or heard at least once about women giving birth in random places without even having been aware of being pregnant. Well, Fiona is one of them. When she was pregnant, she didn't develop any of the typical signs of pregnancy, except for occasional feelings of sickness. Frank, her husband, however related that to stomach problems and suggested that she should drink a schnapps whenever she feels unwell. Due to the alcohol exposure during the entire pregnancy, the couple's baby developed Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Great work, everyone! |

It happens with some regularity actually. And if you have no real symptoms, including no major weight gain, maybe some health issues, and had irregular cycles...then yeah, I can see really easily how it would happen. |
