Okay, Balin, I'm thinking that there is a large number, if not an infinite number, of people who clean, and of places that need to be cleaned. Please tell us: Is Tanner's job relevant? Did Tanner usually clean a certain room, or a variety of places? Or was this a special occasion, that Tanner cleaned when, normally, he would not be expected to? Following Yatin509 [thanks there, my new friend!], Is Tanner occasionally / frequently / always supposed to report to a boss, work with a colleague, and / or deal with the public? Does Tanner have the usual 9-5 job (the "usual", as we say in the States)? Is his height, general looks, disabilities, expertise with languages, ability to kiss up to the boss - are any of these why Tanner is (1) getting ahead, making great progess, at his job, or (2) Does he malinger and be counter-productive, sometimes? Shez and Yatin509 have written some subtle, and some going-right-for-the-throat questions. |

Balin, I am trying to think of almost everything, from coyotes to abortion doctor specialists - but I don't feel certain that I'm on the right track. I am [excuse me, I had a cat on my lap - I'm sure you'll understand] I guess my next set of questions might spread some territory: Did Tanner travel (or voyage) on a boat or a ship; and/or on the high seas? Was Tanner one of the maniacs (ahem) who climbs Everest and/or other important places? When Tanner was young, what was his/her favorite book or movie? |

Wait now. The word "clean" is used throughout the fishing industry, and I should know, because last year I was paid nicely for writing an article about it. So: Will we learn more about Tanner if we throw some verbs at him? |

If Tanner hadn't already cleaned, he would have finished cleaning sooner, although he still would have had to ask for help. Are there two specific instances of cleaning relevant? The one he "already did"? And the one he would have finished sooner? Is Tanner: A janitor? A tech specialist? A painter (walls rather than canvasses)? Was he cleaning as in using cleaning products to remove dirt? Was he cleaning the entire room? The room itself? Or something in the room? The room - Common in homes? Offices? A garage? A kitchen? Bathroom? Bedroom? Storage room? Is the room itself large? Airplane hanger? Circus tent? Boat storage? Barn? Grainery? |

If Tanner hadn't already cleaned, he would have finished cleaning sooner, although he still would have had to ask for help. Right Are there two specific instances of cleaning relevant? Not really The one he "already did"? And the one he would have finished sooner? Is Tanner: A janitor? No, but he was doing a task that a janitor typically does A tech specialist? A painter (walls rather than canvasses)? Was he cleaning as in using cleaning products Yope to remove dirt? Yes Was he cleaning the entire room? The room itself? A certain part of the room Or something in the room? The room - Hmmm - maybe "building" works better than "room." See below Common in homes? Offices? A garage? A kitchen? Bathroom? Bedroom? Storage room? Is the room itself large? YES, but none of the below Airplane hanger? Circus tent? Boat storage? Barn? Grainery? Was He cleaning something outdoor (terrace etc)? indoor (indoor room etc}? This Is the other HAM Tanner's Boss? A manager, but it could just as easily have been a co-worker Relative? Friend ? Work Mate? He would need help from the same person(the other HAM)? Yes Is some natural occurring relevant(like wind, storm etc)? No, with a tiny -ish Is Tanner professional in cleaning? Well, his job involves this particular cleaning The helper always helped him? No Was it cleaned before the time it was cleaned everyday? No Was it cleaned when it was not so dirty? NO Was it cleaned before the time it should be cleaned? No |

Balin, is Tanner an actual tanner? Or a butcher? Or working on an assembly line with these skills needed? If he's, say, left-handed, or blind in one eye, or allergic or ANYthing - does he have an ailment that requires him to have a helper or colleague? Or, if I'm still far from the idea: Does the room or area that he cleans have lots of smells? When he goes home to his lady, does he need to shower first? I'm fascinated. |

RECAP with a few extra HINTS incorporated: I was sweeping the floor at the grocery store where I worked over the summer. Towards the end of my sweep, something happened involving a bug that meant I had to resweep part of the floor. I also had to ask for help, which would have been the case whether or not I'd had to resweep. The reason I had to ask for help involved the bug. |

Did you have to ask for help because you have a phobia about this particular type of insect? I have one about grasshoppers, though, strangely, not about crickets. There must be a long Latin name for this! Was the but - pardon me, insect - still twitching? (Sorry to bring up such a gross subject!) As it turns out, it was (yes, it was gross), but for the sake of the puzzle, assume it dead. Was it the type of insect you would NOT want to see in a grocery store, Do you want to see any type of insect in a grocery store? and you had to report it? No I'll just say the type of insect (it's not really relevant): it was a Palmetto bug, which is like a cockroach on steroids (and with wings, to boot). |

"Eventually?" That must have been some roach! ("Palmetto Bug" is just a bit of p.r. They're all roaches.) Were you using a vacuum cleaner & tried to whack it to death with that? broom (probably not effective, as they can run between the bristles)? This, but it wasn't an ordinary broom; it was a large sh*g broom. or something like a large book? not a commputer??!! or computer-related, like a monitor? Did you drop a bag of cash on it? (Money is powerful!) OTRT or not? Or maybe a telephone - one of those old-fashioned sits-on-a-desk phones? cell phone probably wouldn't do much good, as a full-grown palmetto bug is bigger. Well, seems that way anhhow. =) You've got most of it; now why did I have to re-sweep part of the floor, and why did I have to ask for help? |

You tried to hit the bug with the back, or wooden, part of the broom? Or anyway, broke the broom? (Roach 1, Balin 1, tied at the bottom of the 9th) And had to ask for a replacement broom? |

You tried to hit the bug with the back, or wooden, part of the broom? No Or anyway, broke the broom? Yes (Roach 1, Balin 1, tied at the bottom of the 9th) And had to ask for a replacement broom? No, but close enough. I'm tired of this one. **********SPOILER********** This past summer, while in Myrtle Beach, I worked as a bagger at a Piggly Wiggly. One of my tasks was to sweep the floor every two hours or so with a large sh*g broom. One day, I was sweeping just before closing, and had nearly completed the sweep when I noticed a large palmetto bug crawling all over the broom. I immediately started slamming the broom on the ground in an attempt to kill the bug. I didn't succeed immediately at that, but I did succeed in two other things: I spread all the dust that had been under the broom all over the floor, and I managed to separate the head of the broom from the handle. But I was able to use the end of the handle (which was metal; it hooked onto the head) to behead (and de-wing) the bug. However, I needed to ask a manager for help because I did not know how to reattach the broom head, and I had to re-sweep the section of floor which now was covered in dust and dead bug. If that had happened at the beginning of the sweep, I wouldn't have had to re-sweep any part of the floor, but I still would've needed help in fixing the broom. Side note: When I swept up the bug's remains into a dustpan later, it was still twitching. Yeah, gross, I threw it out immediately. Nice work everyone, especially Shez and Solitiare. New, less gross one below. |

Okay, Roach 1, Balin 2. No rematch expected! But yes, we should just drop it, or nobody will ever want to move to the South. Hmmm, maybe not such a bad idea. wonder what the Brits thought of it? as they don't use 'bug' for 'insect' there. Trust me, you don't want to find one of these in your bed. Anyway, I enjoyed the puzzle, even if you didn't enjoy the experience. |
