A certain slogan is not only catchy but does good. But there is a a less catchy version that would do much more good. How come?

Is the slogan for a material product? a service? a company in general?

Does the catchy slogan involve a rhyme? whereas the less catchy one doesn't rhyme? but describes the product/service/company more accurately? or more favorably?

Is the slogan's main purpose to do good? To sell something?

Does it do good by encouraging people to do something good? Not to do something?

Would the alternative version do good in the same way as the original?

Is it trying to encourage safe behaviour? Environmentally friendly behaviour? Kind behaviour? Is it trying to save lives?

Is there a particular flaw in the existing slogan that would be remedied by the alternative? Would the alternative be a more forceful encouragement? More persuasive? More likely to be listened to/obeyed?

Hi, Nimue!

Where have you seen this slogan?

I live in Miami, Florida - I rarely watch TV - I do watch political news. Would I find your slogan amidst the political punditry?

Does the slogan advise us to go somewhere, such as a theme park?

I really love that you are comparing slogans from "does good" to "does much more good."

Since I'm always all about the animals, I'll say:

* Is it a slogan for a pet food? (One that will make Earth better?)
* How about for kitty litter?
* If you, Nimue, had been hired to write the slogan, do you feel confident that you would have done a WAY better job?

You are directing us to think about environmentally friendly behavior. Is this because:
* The product deals with tuna or other seafood?
* The product deals with types of cloth which might have allergens?
* The product is dangerous to young children or to babies?
* The product is normally okay, but can become dangerous or toxic if its rules are not applied?

Does it have to do with holidays such as Easter or Christmas or Halloween?

This is a great puzzle. I can't wait to come back tomorrow, to see what you've said!

Hi, Nimue! Hi. Fiona!

Where have you seen this slogan? Please see my answers to your yes/no questions below.

I live in Miami, Florida - I rarely watch TV - I do watch political news. I rarely watch political news--I stick to high-quality intellectual programs like "Wheel of Fortune," "Jeopardy!" "Law & Order," & "Four Weddings.""Would I find your slogan amidst the political punditry? My guess is that you'd find it there rarely, if at all.

Does the slogan advise us to go somewhere, such as a theme park? no

I really love that you are comparing slogans from "does good" to "does much more good." Just wait. . .

Since I'm always all about the animals, I'll say:

* Is it a slogan for a pet food? (One that will make Earth better?) no
* How about for kitty litter? no
* If you, Nimue, had been hired to write the slogan, do you feel confident that you would have done a WAY better job?I could adapt the slogan to make it more beneficial but less catchy. Anyone could.

You are directing us to think about environmentally friendly behavior. No, I'm not!!~ Environmentalism is irrel. Is this because:
* The product deals with tuna or other seafood? no
* The product deals with types of cloth which might have allergens? no
* The product is dangerous to young children or to babies? no
* The product is normally okay, but can become dangerous or toxic if its rules are not applied? no

Does it have to do with holidays such as Easter or Christmas or Halloween? no

This is a great puzzle. I can't wait to come back tomorrow, to see what you've said! These are great questions! I can't wait to see your next round.

Hey again, ho again.

I forgot to mention Jeopardy!! My bf and I always watch that before the political punditry. :D

Biograd was asking about the syntax of the slogan, but - without meaning to be - I'm sort of immune to TV slogans. (Probably wool-gathering, or playing with the cats.)

So, it IS a TV slogan, which I should notice?

Please tell us in which country this debuted? (I'm assuming it's in English.)

You say that the slogan is for a service, but not a product. Is the slogan urging us to buy something? Or to avoid doing something?

Is it about recycling?
About not littering?

(A friend of mine, Joel Achenbach, a columnist at The Washington Post, once wrote a column saying that some things actually ARE getting better.

He said, more or less, "It used to be, that if you were drinking a can of soda while driving, once you finished the can, you just tossed it out the window. People generally don't do that any more.")

Does the slogan have to do with family life? With raising kids properly?

With doing the best for your pets?

With cleaning out the refrigerator?

With being patient with neighbors who are obviously crazy?

Lol, I really do need to take a nap. 48 hours awake and I hope I'm not being rude to anyone. Unless they deserve it. Hee hee.

Oh, Nimue, honey, I'm back.

(Like the Creature from the Black Lagoon.)

I want to be clear about this. Did you write, or think up, "the less catchy version that would do much more good"? Or were you in a conversation with friends when this came up?

Not important, I suspect: but I really do want to know the genesis of both the slogan and the less catchy version.

My wonderful Mischka cat has been asleep on my thigh for almost an hour, so I'm going to dump her and stretch and take a short nap.

Nimue, I always enjoy your puzzles. Keep up the good work!

Hey again, ho again.

I forgot to mention Jeopardy!! My bf and I always watch that before the political punditry. :DDespite Alex Treback's irritating mixture of earnestness & cutesiness, I love the program & rarely miss it as long as the contestants are adults or at least college students. Kiddie "Jeopardy!" I can live without.

Biograd was asking about the syntax of the slogan, but - without meaning to be - I'm sort of immune to TV slogans. (Probably wool-gathering, or playing with the cats.)

About not littering? ditto

(A friend of mine, Joel Achenbach, a columnist at The Washington Post, once wrote a column saying that some things actually ARE getting better. He's right. For one thing, human life expectancies are getting longer. Also, there's less discrimination against blacks, gays, disabled people, etc.

He said, more or less, "It used to be, that if you were drinking a can of soda while driving, once you finished the can, you just tossed it out the window. People generally don't do that any more.")

Does the slogan have to do with family life? noWith raising kids properly? no

With doing the best for your pets? no. By the way, check out my cat, whose gorgeous picture is on my registration page.

With cleaning out the refrigerator? no

With being patient with neighbors who are obviously crazy? no

Lol, I really do need to take a nap. 48 hours awake and I hope I'm not being rude to anyone. Unless they deserve it. Hee hee. Sleep well, & be glad you don't have insomnia (like me).

Hmm... a "LTPF list of areas of human activity" would be VERY long!
Anyway, some guesses, is it about:

Careers?
Education?
Charity/giving?
Money?
Family life/relatives?
Knowledge/wisdom (aside from, possibly, being a piece of wisdom itself)?
Asserting individuality?
Tradition?
Growing up/growing older?

does the slogan try to encourag people to become teachers? to improve their teaching? does it encourage people in general to teach stuff to others? does it say that teaching is good?

does it relate to how to teach? the best way to teach?

does it relate to teaching by example? telling others what to do? writing teaching materials?

does it relate to schools? higher education?

RECAP & HINT: Add the following to the puzzle statement: The slogan has to do with education, almost always in an informal context rather than a classroom.

Does it relate to teaching versus something else? like the one about teaching a man to fish vs. giving a man a fish? (that doesn't rhyme, so it's probably not it, but may be OTRT)

HINT: The slogan is most likely to be used in a general campaign to increase skills of many people.

Is it a slogan that emphasizes the value of learning? (such as "knowledge is power")

Does it suggest how to work at learning (such as "practice makes perfect")

"Each one teach one"? YES!!!!!!!! Now just find a variant of this slogan that is less catchy but will do MUCH more good. How much more? Well, a certain word applies here. . . .

Does the slogan involve the word "learn"? no"

Okay, I see the lovely Doriana came up with "Each one teach one" - and, I admit, that without context, this means very little to me.

"You can't learn all of the amazing things in the world, if you stay home. But if you stay home, remember that novels tell us about the past, present and future - UNLESS you are too lazy to read."

I'm summarizing what the amazing writer Jonathan Lethem said to me once.

I've never understood "Each one teach one" either.

Is the improvement along the lines of "Each one teach many?"

********* SPOILER ***********
The slogan "Each one teach one" can do a lot of good, but the less catchy variant "Each one teach many" can literally do exponentially more good. Will my new puzzle be better than this one was? Check it out!

sorry Nimue - I did my best, but I've never even heard this slogan so the chances of me guessing it were pretty slim. I'll do my best with your next one. :oD
