Did she ask what she told and he made out something very creative of it? or something what the teacher wouldn't have thought otherwise? all right, so let me see if I've got this right. a teenager was found ignorant of something in his/her Literature/Composition class, by his/her teacher, Thalia. This "something" was "a terrible evil" that is yopishly a specific historical event, but not a war/The Holocaust/a terrorist attack. It's yopishly more general, but not racism/poverty/slavery, and yopishly still happens or is still happening today. This "terrible evil" is the topic of the literature. Country/region of origin is noishly relevant, but the date range of the fictional literature is relevant. Is this all correct? Did I miss anything? | ||

Nimue, does your story discuss: race crimes? crimes against homosexuals? children with birth defects? war veterans with any and all kinds of physical or mental disabilities? And I'm going to throw out there "Münchausen syndrome by proxy" because it's a terrible, if less common, problem ... about which I have started to write notes for a piece of fiction, myself. (Maybe I could share some bits of it with you ...?) ((That, and compulsive hoarding. My, isn't it wonderful that all of us here are so happily finding ways to keep insanity away? LOL. - Honestly, I think the fact that you are all so instantly lovable (as I've found 90% of the time to be true of horror writers, too) means that we probably have very good ways to remain sane.)) Nimue, I've missed this thread (just, y'know, minor stuff at home to deal with; not nearly as fun as coming here) and am sorry! I remember 1994 fairly vividly, because of a personal tragic event and a personal wonderful event. Whether my recollections will match your story is something else. Earlier, we'd had the September 11 attacks on the Twin Towers, and the national press never let up on it. Armies gathered. Rhetoric gathered... 1994, though: Around then, a lot of Slavic countries got divorced. I remember a friend making a joke about Bosnia's neighbors. On my birthday, I read in the news that horrible bloodshed was going on in Rwanda. That summer, a comet slammed into Jupiter, which I recall laughingly because I was at a science fiction conference and a rocket scientist there said, "Just wait until Jupiter rotates. Those with telescopes will see that the impact reads: YOU'RE NEXT." Clinton was in office and I think that was around when nuclear armies began to power down. So to speak. Wow, now I'm awash in memories and you are asking us for more, what, local events, right? Okay, so set me straight, and I certainly want to read the next puzzle you'll post! Fiona | ||

I'm a little confused as to exactly what we are trying to discover here Felicia Nimue.. are there two things: a) what the teenager got wrong and b) what her response to that was (how it was 'inspirational'? what he got wrong: was it that HIV/AIDS can be treated now? that people who can access drugs don't necessarily die early with it any more? that it has become a 'chronic' disease? and her response: was it just the gain in knowledge that there are some people who still think like this? that ignorance about HIV/AIDS is still out there? | ||

A student in the class said something along the lines of "Why is that guy so sorry for himself? So he's got AIDS, big deal. My brother's a diabetic." He had no idea that AIDS used to be a death sentence! From death sentence to manageable chronic illness in less than 25 years--it's a medical miracle! By the way, I think people with manageable chronic illnesses are perfectly entitled to feel sorry for themselves. I sure would, if I had one, especially if it were diabetes. No gooey desserts!! |
