Thalia, a teacher, found one student's ignorance truly inspiring. How come? |

Did it reveal to her that she hadn't taught something as well as she thought she had? Did it prompt her to research a fact she hadn't thought to look up? (come to think of it, why ISN'T it like that...?) Did it make her think of a better way to introduce a particular topic, so as to avoid misconceptions? |

While ignoring what the teacher taught did he\she(I am after this using he for the student) did something constructive? something creative ? For that: Is the student Male? Did he learned something else while he ignored the teacher? Any other person relevant? Someone who is present at the time when facts were re asked? The subject is science? arts? some language(english, german, french) ? commerce( business, economics, accounts)? Social science? Environmental studies? Psychology ? Did she ask what she told and he made out something very creative of it? or something what the teacher wouldn't have thought otherwise? Is Thalia trying to increase her students caliber? thinking level? Knowledge? Factual knowledge? Would you say Thalia is a good teacher? Did Thalia asked him something? Did he told Thalia something on his own? Would Thalia want all students to be like the student? Did the answer he gave to Thalia made her thought of a new way of teaching? |

"Any other person relevant?" There is a quote by Einstein which says, you can teach little children by example; but the really only good way to teach anyone is by example. (I know I didn't get that exactly right.) |

Is a particular piece of literature relevant? a particular author? a particular literary style? Did he reveal his ignorance by asking a question? making a statement? Did his ignorance give her an opportunity to teach him something? Was she inspired by the knowledge that the thing he is ignorant of is rare enough that someone has never heard of it? all right, so let me see if I've got this right. a teenager was found ignorant of something in his/her Literature/Composition class, by his/her teacher, Thalia. This "something" was "a terrible evil" that is yopishly a specific historical event, but not a war/The Holocaust/a terrorist attack. It's yopishly more general, but not racism/poverty/slavery, and yopishly still happens or is still happening today. This "terrible evil" is the topic of the literature. Country/region of origin is noishly relevant, but the date range of the fictional literature is relevant. Is this all correct? Did I miss anything? |

I want to go back to your title: "Inspiring Ignorance." Is the ignorance a sort of prevailing ignorance, such as Mark Twain used to joke about; or maybe the type that South Park can joke about / be satirical about? In other words, is this ignorance local or provincial or in any way confined to an area? Or does the ignorance reside in a child / teenager / parent / older people - and do the ages matter? |

Your answer to Kaylee obviates, I think, the need to ask whether stylistic points matter: such as punctuation, spelling, oratory or rhetorical statements, and so on. Okay, then: high school or home-schooled teenagers, correct? I apologize if this has been asked already: short story written in English? in America? in the Empire or its many colonies? (JK!) a translation? internationally known and read? Does the plight have to do with: harming minds? harming bodies? harming seemingly innocent citizens (as in Jackson's "The Lottery")? dysfunctional families? spies, impersonations, deceptions of any kind? Has the story been adapted to film? This is super fun. (And let's move chat about Orwell and Bradbury elsewhere. Maybe the chat room? Did I already say this?) |

Nimue, does your story discuss: race crimes? crimes against homosexuals? children with birth defects? war veterans with any and all kinds of physical or mental disabilities? And I'm going to throw out there "Münchausen syndrome by proxy" because it's a terrible, if less common, problem ... about which I have started to write notes for a piece of fiction, myself. (Maybe I could share some bits of it with you ...?) ((That, and compulsive hoarding. My, isn't it wonderful that all of us here are so happily finding ways to keep insanity away? LOL. - Honestly, I think the fact that you are all so instantly lovable (as I've found 90% of the time to be true of horror writers, too) means that we probably have very good ways to remain sane.)) I mean, we can speak freely, now that you've exposed yourself, Cat-Woman! I beg your pardon, it's nearly 5 a.m. here in Miami, and I'm too tired to check out the Chat Room, which I'll do tomorrow - for sure! And I don't know where the rest of you live, because the time-stamps on each entry appear to be wildly all over the world. But that's okay. We probably don't want the authorities to know that there is a major group of people who love each other and who spend their time thinking up horrible ways that bad things can happen to people. Laughs and hugs, more tomorrow, Fiona |

Please do! You can email me at Felicia_Ackerman@brown.edu ((That, and compulsive hoarding. no--& I'm very skeptical of that diagnosis, which seems to get applied to people who have more stuff than they have room for & hence targets the poor. Meow!! Your story "Flourish Your Heart in This World" was published in 1998; "The Other Two Sides" in 2008). So do you want us to be thinking about events in those years? (And I'm not a librarian for nothing. I'll open and read those stories. But it will have to wait until later today.) Or, wait. Clearly not every single person here is a librarian, so there must be easy ways to find your stories. I have the usual librarian anxiety about wanting to help *everyone* to find what they need. But please be patient while I do a few chores and then come back here. Fiona |

Nimue, I've missed this thread (just, y'know, minor stuff at home to deal with; not nearly as fun as coming here) and am sorry! I remember 1994 fairly vividly, because of a personal tragic event and a personal wonderful event. Whether my recollections will match your story is something else. Earlier, we'd had the September 11 attacks on the Twin Towers, and the national press never let up on it. Armies gathered. Rhetoric gathered... 1994, though: Around then, a lot of Slavic countries got divorced. I remember a friend making a joke about Bosnia's neighbors. On my birthday, I read in the news that horrible bloodshed was going on in Rwanda. That summer, a comet slammed into Jupiter, which I recall laughingly because I was at a science fiction conference and a rocket scientist there said, "Just wait until Jupiter rotates. Those with telescopes will see that the impact reads: YOU'RE NEXT." Clinton was in office and I think that was around when nuclear armies began to power down. So to speak. Wow, now I'm awash in memories and you are asking us for more, what, local events, right? Okay, so set me straight, and I certainly want to read the next puzzle you'll post! Fiona |

I'm a little confused as to exactly what we are trying to discover here Felicia Nimue.. are there two things: a) what the teenager got wrong and b) what her response to that was (how it was 'inspirational'? what he got wrong: was it that HIV/AIDS can be treated now? that people who can access drugs don't necessarily die early with it any more? that it has become a 'chronic' disease? and her response: was it just the gain in knowledge that there are some people who still think like this? that ignorance about HIV/AIDS is still out there? |

A student in the class said something along the lines of "Why is that guy so sorry for himself? So he's got AIDS, big deal. My brother's a diabetic." He had no idea that AIDS used to be a death sentence! From death sentence to manageable chronic illness in less than 25 years--it's a medical miracle! By the way, I think people with manageable chronic illnesses are perfectly entitled to feel sorry for themselves. I sure would, if I had one, especially if it were diabetes. No gooey desserts!! |
