can anybody do this? male? female? adult? child?

is it considered bad manners to do it in public?

does it make a noise when they do it? can you see it? feel it? smell it? or reason that it has been done?

do they do it indoors? outdoors? alone? in pairs? in groups? daytime? nighttime?

is it involuntary? would they stop themselves doing it if they knew they were about to?

Can one hagtraz in any language? Yes and congrats for being the first person to spell my new word incorrectly Hee Hee Can you hear someone hagtraz if you don't know the language? No Can you see someone hagtraz if you can't hear what they're saying? No Would asking someone to stop hagtrazzing make them do so? Hard to answer the chances to hagtras don't come up too often and would rarely come up twice in the one conversation If not, would they be able to if they tried? Again hard to answer. I think in fairness most hagtrasing is accidental and there's no guaranteed way of avoiding it Do you hagtraz? I have done and felt sorry for the "victim" If so, does it annoy you when you do it? I regret it but I guess it's secretly nice to be on the other side of a hagtrasing

contradicting someone? No interrupting them? No speaking over them? no capping their stories? Can you explain what this means supplying their punchlines? No not as annoying as that
misleading someone? No

A little hint : As you may have guessed this is a fairly silly little puzzle which I'm running because I was hagtrased twice over the weekend. Hagtras is an Acronym and the s does stand for story . I'm unsure what capping a story means. Does that mean outdoing it? if so No but not a million miles away either

Since it's not language specific, it's not breaking one of the three golden rules, is it?
1. Prepositions are something you don't end a sentence with.
2. Don't use no double negations.
3. Remember to never split infinitives
(;

Is hagtrassing something that is said as a response to something else?
Is hagtrasing related to what is said? To how it is said? Raising your voice at the end of a statement relevant? Not raising your voice of a question relevant. (See what I did there?)

It can't be as simple as "having a guess that ruins a story"? Oh yes it can. I actually penned it as "Hazarding a guess that ruins a story". However Hagtrassing only applies to a particular guess scenario so you have still to uncover what that is.

Work still to be done

Does the person guess the surprise ending? No but I should explain. Hagtrassing occurs when one is telling a particular type of story where the listener is invited to guess something. A hagtras is an incorrect guess that ruins the impact of the story. All you have to do is establish what type of story we're talking about. It's not an exact genre but I'm sure we've all told stories that leave ourselves open to a hagtrassing Guess some element of it? see above
Is the guess made in jest? Not usually but in a deliberate hagtras it might be Does the storyteller say "You'll never guess what happened" and someone does exactly that? No

Anything to do with fetes and guessing the weight of the cow, number of crumbs in a cake, number of cakes in the cow who has just knocked over the tea stall? How delightfully British . I'm afraid it's no old bean.

Major Hint Think money

Guessing how much you spent on something? Or how much you saved, and they tell you that the thing is cheaper elsewhere?

Sorry Balin nearly missed these

Has a similar story happened to another person present? Not necessarily
Does the guess make the ending seem anticlimactic/boring? Yes

Lynne has almost solved this

Is the person telling the story proud of having got a good deal on something, but the hagtrasser guesses an even lower amount which makes the teller look like they didn't get such a good deal after all?

Do they guess a ludicrous amount? Yes that's about it Do they guess the exact amount? No

Is the person telling the story proud of having got a good deal on something, but the hagtrasser guesses an even lower amount which makes the teller look like they didn't get such a good deal after all? Absolutely perfect. Well done.

o hai enjay kitteh, were yuo haz been?

a folktale? a story told in song? Fraid not....

****************Spoiler*****************

Lynne and Balin are pretty much there but Enjay pops up with the perfect definition.

I was telling a friend about my trip to the Grand National in Liverpool early this year. The story went like this.. "We got the coach to the ferry, the ferry to Holyhead, the coach to Liverpool, 3 nights bed & breakfast and 3 evening meals in the hotel, 3 day passes into the racecourse and the coach to and from the hotel each day plus the coach and ferry back home. Guess how much?" (actual cost an unbelievable 400). My friend "Oh i dunno ...about 300"

Don't you just hate it when you're boasting about some great deal you got and when you ask the listener how much they think it was they guess lower than you actually paid. If like me the answer is yes then you hate it when you someone
Hazards A Guess That Ruins A Story which is pretty much the definition of the verb to Hagtras.

Not life and death stuff I'll admit but annoying nonetheless.

Thanks for playing

Sadly in these situations I'm usually the guesser. Sorry.

But yes, I can see how that would be annoying. And I haven't been around hagtrasing that often.

Actually (says she who whittles and overthinks these things) perhaps there was the imp in me when I asked the question. Sorry! Don't put your money on a horse called Lynne. She'll trip and stumble at the first fence.
