There are now 2 types of experimental connections puzzles in existence: the one Peter365 came up with ("Experimental Connections Puzzle") and the one I did ("Experimental Film: A strange sort of connections puzzle"); both need clever names. Since I can't think of any, I'll just say that this puzzle is the former.

Post lyrics to songs from musicals and state what musical it is from. If the musical has the three criteria I'm thinking of, I will respond with another lyric (from the same musical, but not necessarily the same song); if not, I will say No and try to make some sort of pun while doing so. I'll also state how many of the criteria it did hit.

Do you hear the people sing?
Singing the song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
who will not be slaves again.
Les Misérables

Macavity's a mystery cat, he's called the Hidden Paw
For he's a master criminal who can defy the law.
He's the bafflement of Scotland Yard, the Flying Squad's despair
For when they reach the scene of crime, Macavity's not there!

He don't plant 'taters, he don't plant cotton
But dem dat plants dem, is soon forgotten
But ol' man river, he keeps on rollin' along

Just a spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down

As office boy to an Attorney's firm.
I cleaned the windows and I swept the floor,

Of course you did; I don't blame you. And I have to say No (but, you guessed it, it has 2), and I'm quoting(-ish) anyway:

To the beautiful Indian country that I love

Bali Ha'i may call you,
Any night, any day,
In your heart, you'll hear it call you:

Come to me, come to me!"

HINT: Of the ones with 2:

A two-fer that misses #3. From now on if a musical only has some criteria I will say which ones.

Is it possible for a musical to meet only one criterion? None at all? It is, but I underestimated just how many would actually fit the criteria, specifically #1 and #2. Not sure how that will help you, if at all.

Is it relevant whether the musical is based on something else (book, movie etc)?

Mamma mia, here I go again
My my, how can I resist you?
Mamma mia, does it show again?
My my, just how much I've missed you
Mamma Mia

Is this the real life?
Is this just fantasy?
Caught in a landslide
No escape from reality
Open your eyes
Look up to the skies and see
I'm just a poor boy, I need no sympathy
Because I'm easy come, easy go
little high, little low
Anyway the wind blows, doesn't really matter to me, to me
We will rock you

Is it relevant whether they are or were on Broadway? Whether they've had a national tour? If they progressed to London? How long they were shown on Broadway/in London?

Little town, it's a quiet village
Every day, like the one before
Little town, full of little people
Waking up to say...

"Belle", Beauty and the Beast, though those are the opening lines of the song from the film, and I haven't seen the musical on stage =(

I think you missed Kaylee's latest post...

And while I'm at it, let's try to sledgehammer this thing...

You will be who you want to be.
You
Can choose whatever heaven grants.
As long as you can have your chance,
I swear i'll give my life for you.
Miss Saigon

Call it dumb, call it clever
Ah, but you can get odds forever
That the guy's only doing it for some doll
Some doll, some doll
The guy's only doing it for some doll!
Guys and Dolls

Don't cry for me Argentina
The truth is I never left you
All through my wild days
My mad existence
I kept my promise
Don't keep your distance
Evita

Tomorrow! Tomorrow!
I love ya, Tomorrow!
You're always a day
A-way!
Annie

It was the music
Of something beginning,
An era exploding,
A century spinning
In riches and rags,
And in rhythm and rhyme.
The people called it Ragtime...
Ragtime!
Ragtime!
Ragtime!
Ragtime

One of my all-time favourites from Louis Armstrong...

Hello, Dolly. Well, hello, Dolly! (It's Louis, Dolly)
It's so nice to have back where you belong.

You're lookin' swell, Dolly. I can tell, Dolly,
You're still glowin', you're still crowin', you're still goin' strong!

I feel the room swayin',
and the band's playin',
one of your old favorite song from way back when!

So, take her wrap, fellas,
Find her an empty lap, fellas!
Dolly'll never go away again!
Hello, Dolly!

By the sharp lapel of your checkered coat
Sit down, sit down, sit down, sit down,
Sit down you're rockin' the boat

The truth is I never left you

Mourning all day and mourning all night
Falling over ourselves to get all of the misery right

Well, that sledgehammer wasn't that effective at all. I'm certainly out of practice...

Does criterion #1 have anything to do with the source of the musical? Does criterion #2?

Does criterion #2 have anything to do with actors playing a role of an animal singing songs? Actors playing a role of another human being singing songs?

When you said that the 1902 version of the Wizard of Oz may be missing 1 or 2 criteria, criterion #3 is obviously one of them. Is criterion #1 the potentially missing criterion? Is criterion #2?

RECAP:

Criteria #1 and 2 both are related to songs from the musical.
#2 has to do with who sings the songs.

From a land
From a
Faraway place
Where caravan
Camels roam.

Where they cut
Off your ear
If they don't
Like your face
It's barbaric, but hey
It's home!

When the wind's
From the east
And the sun's
From the west
And the sand
In the glass
Is right,

Come on down

Is criterion #1 concerning the song's form (for example, having 3/4 (waltz) time, having symphonic form, rondo, blues, jazz, etc.)? If no, does criterion #1 have anything to do with the source of the song?

Hmmm...need to clarify a few things...

Does #1 have to do with the presence of a single word (i.e. one of the songs in the musical must contain this single word in order to qualify for #1)?

Does #1 have to do with the absence of a single word (i.e. none of the songs in the musical can contain this word in order to qualify for #1)?

In either case, is only one word involved? If more than one, how many?

They did it, they did it
They did it, then hid it
And soon they’ll be going to Sing-Sing.

In examining a book such as Peter Rabbit, it is important that the superficial chracteristics of its deceptively simple plot should not be allowed to blind the reader to the more substantial fabric of its deeper motivations. In this report I plan to discuss the sociological implications of family pressures so great as to drive an otherwise moral rabbit to perform acts of thievery which he consciously knew were against the law. I also hope to explore the personality of Mr. Macgregor in his conflicting roles as farmer and humanitarian.

~Avenue Q This one only matches criteria #2 and #3. I wish not, because there have to be so many quotable lyrics in this one...

~Whistle Down the Wind This neither matches #1 nor #3. I'm not sure if it matches #2 (solo song), because I couldn't find a song list with who sings it.

Everybody's got the right to be happy,
Don't be mad, life's not as bad as it seems,
If you keep your goal in sight,
You can climb to any height,
Everybody's got the right to their dreams.

That's all right... the table was really more for me and the solvers :-)

So criterion 1 has something to do with the presence (or lack?) of a certain word? words? found in a song title somewhere within the show? Is it a specific word? or a type (like 'a word having to do with time')? Is it found in any random song? or in a certain one (like the intro, showstopper, or finale)? Is it "I"? "love"? "am"? "the"?

#1: There must be a song in the musical containing a character's name in the title.
#2: The musical must include a solo song.
#3: The musical must have been nominated for the Tony Award for Best Musical.
