Does his name suggest he has a different religion? No is he a priest? a monk? No to both ooh! it's not Cardinal Sin is it? No. I wish I could say there is a pun involved in this puzzle, but not so. Religion-related,religion-related in that the person named is a minister and "not the crime itself, but related." the word itself does not describe a crime, but you might say it's a no-no. Cage, Nicholas Cage! Because he belongs in one. No, wait, that's awful, Fiona kitteh! For shame! Law? Like Jude Law? Because he cheated on his lady? ditto! Nobody you have heard of, anyway! I want to make sure: This IS an aptronym, right? One which, in this case, works in reverse? yes ("Cardinal Sin would say that, because he was a short guy, he was only a venial sin!" = Heehee! I know you wrote, "It sounds just as it's spelt," but is it a spelling we'd find in a dictionary? As opposed to nonsense like Sinn, or Pryde, or Fawlty. I'll list a few words, as much thinking out loud as throwing out suggestions, that might also be last names, okay? Jones (as in jonesing) Caper Bluff Gore (now that would be weird) Slaughter Graft Oh! I just thought of Book - the name of the shady preacher in "Firefly" and "Serenity" - I suppose the name was intended to imply "the Good Book" but I always thought, "Book him, Danno!" I also just remembered you said the name didn't end in -er. You've repeated that we will not have heard of this guy. Is he someone in your town? Did he get into the local news? Which is why you thought of the puzzle? Okay, I'm not too proud to beg for hints. Is it one syllable? Two syllables? More? Is it a Germanic-English name, such as Smith or Miller? Does it derive from French? Polish? Spanish? Yiddish? Italian? Dutch? Should I keep going? I've rambled, but won't edit in case any of the above helps someone else; and I really love word games! |

Parkour? ??(that would be awesome, and it's French, but it can't possibly be the answer)It's not. You said to explore "gamble." Gaming? Gamer? (No, can't end in -er.) Racing? Dogs or horses? Bingo? (No, that's a name for a pet, not a minister.) I'm stumped, but determined to get further. I'm good at Scrabble, so now I go to the next step and please, everyone, forgive me. Does the name begin with: A B C D E I don't want to waste everyone's time, Solitiare, much less yours: Will you give us the first letter? (No, that's a name for a pet, not a minister.) I'm afraid I may have misled you. The word is not gambling related. No. See below. **********SPOILER************** His name is Frank Cocaine, and he is a minister. Story is that the name was originally something like Cocaigne, and one of his ancestors, on coming to this country, changed the spelling so it would match the pronunciation. Of course, he didn't realize what would happen in future generations. Good job, all! And apologies to Gregory, who didn't change his name - and why should he? |
